Hey hey all/
Just started back after a long break from gaming. Nostalgia got the better of me and my friends, so the dice have been dusted off and the tape measures stolen back from the loft monsters.
We're starting small and going to advance the armies as we feel fit. Planning on starting with 500 point armies and adding 250 points when we feel comfortable with the rules etc.
My core 500 points is hopefully gonna be :
Points Cost 100
5Man Assault Squad
- No Jump pack
+ Discounted Rhino
Points Cost 115
5 Man Assault Squad
Points Cost 100
5 Man Death Company
Points Cost 175
Total Army Cost 490
Please pull it apart and critique, I'm here to get advise and to learn how to put up a bit of a fight.
Leaves me very little room for wargear, thinking if I was to spend it I would opt to take melta bombs to deal with any armour I might come across.
Captain will deploy with the Assault Squad + Rhino, will be used to quickly engage occupy and secure key locations, either choke points or objectives. Rhino will then be used as a road block to stop troops getting easy LoS to my models.
2 Sets of jump pack troops I plan to use to make quick strikes on the flanks of the opposing armies, attempting to take out key units (with melta bombs on 1 model per squad for vehicles)
I am hoping that the survivability of Space Marines will cover for my lack of numbers, playing a shock and awe style game.
Fielding 16 models + 1 Rhino worries me. The mobility in the army list and the general toughness of Marines are basically what I'm counting on. Potentially lacking firepower though. No Bolters or heavy weapons.
Thinking to swap the Death Company and the Jet Packless troop choice around. Have the DC in the rhino w/out Jump packs, and the assault squad as standard. Also gives me 25 extra points for wargear.
Worth dropping the DC to take Sang. Priests for each of the other squads? Less models, yet more survivability and more points for wargear. Leaves me with a very small army that mass fire will pull apart.
Worth dropping an Assault Squad altogether and taking a tactical squad? Would the extra firepower help me more?
How about equiping the DC with bolters to take advantage of Relentless. Not gonna be able to hold a location with DC's though, this is why I was thinking assault marines for this role.
3 Armies I'll be playing are....Sisters of Battle (he will have an Vindicar in his list), a Ravenwing army (comprising of 7 models, all on bikes) and a Tau army (no Kroot, 3 Suits and a Fire warrior squad I think).
@750 points I'm not to sure what way I want to go. Thinking about going with the same core force with 2x Dreadnoughts.
Anything higher than that I'll possible start playing a more standard Marine army, taking tactical squads and more armour in an attempt to have an effective mid and end game army.
Thanks in advance, and apologies for the disjointed style of writing, hopefully it makes sense
A 2nd Army list I was thinking about is :
Again without wargear atm.
9 Man Tactical Squad
Total Cost 454 points.
Leaves me a lot more option for customising. Or I can drop a marine, and attach a Rhino to the tactical squad.
Pretty much the same play style, just with more models and a lot more firepower.
Death Company costs a lot. How effective are they likely to be in a 500pt battle. Not sure they will equal their point cost in kills...
