1500pt Imperial Guard Troop Based Army.

Hi all, I am getting back into the hobby after many years break and a few falls returns. I am hoping that with my new army I will be able to do well. I am not interested in purely hammering the opponent, I am after a balanced competition that both sides can enjoy. Waffle aside here is my army list.

I originally had voxs in both command squads but its really not worth it given I need to give all my cannonfodder..errr...loyal soldiers voxs as well.

Please let me know what you think. I have pretty much the whole army to buy currently.

I am a bit iffy on the Executioner, I love the idea but I think it might be a large point sink for limited gain and I might switch the Banewolf for a devildog.

Welcome back to the game and definitely welcome back to the forums. Hope I we can help you out here.

One thing to note is that armybuilder format is a pain-in-the-neck to read. Easier just to type it out in word? ;-)

Overall you lack a lot of firepower at range, have no mobility of troops, and don't have any reliable anti-tank. Those 3 things are key in IG.

Unnamed1500 Pts - Imperial Guard Army

    HQ
    • CCS - Plasmagun, Regimental Standard, Medi-pack, Bolt Pistol - 112
Not very threatening at all and lacks focus. Pick a role for them, if you want to give orders and boss squads around voxes wouldn't be bad and a heavy weapon (autocannon) would be good.

Medipack is a waste of points and the single plasmagun won't do much for you. Bolt Pistol is just filler, don't even bother with it unless you have nothing else to do.

    Troops
    • Infantry Platoon
      • Platoon Command Squad- Meltagun, Platoon Standard - 55
    • Infantry Platoon
      • Platoon Command Squad - Plasmagun - 45
    • Infantry Squad - Grenade Launcher - 55
    • Infantry Squad - Grenade Launcher - 55
Same as above.

  • Heavy Weapons Squad - x3 Missile Launchers - 90
  • Heavy Weapons Squad - x3 Lascannons - 105
  • Very easy to kill. S6 will chew through these, a multilaser, scatter laser or anything stronger can wipe out an entire squad in a single round. Lascannons are too pricey in HWS, hide them in line squads if you want them or better yet, take a Vendetta.

Missile Launchers are very inaccurate (only BS3) and are also easy to kill.

If you take heavy weapon squads keep them cheap (autocannons or missile launchers) and take at least 3 squads.

    Fast Attack
    • Hell Hound - Hull heavy bolter - 130
    • Bane Wolf - Hull heavy bolter - 130
Both can be good, though the bane wolf is more a suicide vehicle. I'd honestly go for a second Hell Hound or take a Devil Dog (you need the anti-tank) and put multi-meltas on the hull.

    Heavy Support
    • Leman Russ Executioner - Hull Lascannon, Multi-melta sponsons - 235.
While I really like this tank, it's probably better to focus on some more generalist fire-power. If you do take an Executioner go for plasma sponsons instead. Multi-meltas make no sense and conflict with it's role on the battlefield. Lascannon is for flavor, but makes it pricey.

    • Leman Russ Battle Tank - Lascannon, Heavy Bolter Sponsons - 185
Get rid of the sponsons and you're good. A stationary tank is a dead tank.

As I said, lacks firepower and you desperately need mobility. Objective games will not be your friend. All of your melta is on foot as well and very easy to kill. All you have for anti-tank are lascannons on foot and on the vehicles....not very reliable.

Hockeyman as always makes some very good points. I'd diverge a little on the Fast Attack choice. I favor a hull multimelta on any hellhound chassis. A fast vehicle with a multimelta will have a mech player reaching for their clean underwear (12 in deployment + 12in move = multimelta that can hit your opponent's table edge). It will also draw attention away form your heavy tanks and troops. As to which variant, I really like the basic hellhound, 6/4 with no cover save and at range is very nice and the multimelta gives you some flexibility.

I also would like to *STRONGLY* agree about sponsons. Unless you are going to task one or more infantry squads to babysit that tank or have it in cover (both wasteful things to do in my opinion), never take sponsons on a Leman Russ.

Okay, thank you very much for the input. I did have concern about the Executioner and the Banewolf, so they have been replaced. I have always been a bit iffy with Voxs but I think the reason for that was the way they worked in the previous codex and the points cost to get them usable. I completely neglected Veteran squads ( I thought they were in the elites section and not in troops so expected them to be a LOT more expensive. ) Anyway, a revised list, this time using word

CCS – Veteran Weapons Team – Autocannon – Vox - Officer of the Fleet 95pts

    Infantry Platoon

    PCS – Vox – Weapons Team – Autocannon – 40 pts

    IS 1 – Vox – Weapons Team – Autocannon - 65

    IS 2 – Vox – Weapons Team – Autocannon - 65

    IS 3 – Vox – Weapons Team – Autocannon – 65

    Veteran Squad – Chimera – Shotguns – 3x Melta – 150

    Vetrean Squad – Veteran Weapons Team – Lascannon - Vox – 140

    Veteran Squad – Shotguns – 3x Melta – 100

    Vendetta Gunship – HB Sponsons – 140

    Hellhound – HB – 130

    Devildog – MultiMelta – 135

Leman Russ BT – Hull HB – 150

Leman Russ Demo – Hull HB - 165

CCS – Veteran Weapons Team – Autocannon – Vox - Officer of the Fleet 95pts This squad can have 2 special weapons, take them. I also strongly recommend either camo cloaks or a chimera

    Infantry Platoon

    PCS – Vox – Weapons Team – Autocannon – 40 pts

    IS 1 – Vox – Weapons Team – Autocannon - 65

    IS 2 – Vox – Weapons Team – Autocannon - 65

    IS 3 – Vox – Weapons Team – Autocannon – 65
I notice that you are not including special weapons in your line squads. grenade launchers might at a bit more oomph for cheap

    Veteran Squad – Chimera – Shotguns – 3x Melta – 150

    Vetrean Squad – Veteran Weapons Team – Lascannon - Vox – 140
Again this squad is short 3 special weapons. Looking at your list, I question the viability of a lone unmounted vet squad, another Infantry squad would be an adequate place holder for fewer points

    Veteran Squad – Shotguns – 3x Melta – 100
I'm assuming that this squad will ride in the Vendetta

    Vendetta Gunship – HB Sponsons – 140
Good choice, strongly consider getting another one, possibly at the expense of one of the hellhound variants. Experiment and decide which one fits your play style best.

    Hellhound – HB – 130

    Devildog – MultiMelta – 135

Leman Russ BT – Hull HB – 150
Solid choice, I prefer hull Lascannons on mine, but it's a matter of personal preference

Leman Russ Demo – Hull HB - 165
I think a Hull Heavy FLamer might be a good idea for this one, Demolishers are assault magnets
Over all not a bad list. You are under-gunning your squads, and have a naked looking vet squad. If you intend to run the vet squad with that load out consider swapping it for another infantry squad for your platoon, otherwise get another transport. I think that you would benefit from a quality reading of the 5th Ed codex.

Replacing the Devildog/Hellhound might be a great idea. And I will look again at the CCS.

I really need to sit down and read through the codex without preconceptions of what I want.

I think you are also correct about the grenade launchers, but I need to find away of dropping something in order to do that.

    Revision 3

Play following on from Ironweevil's insight, I have read the codex through fully and revised my army as thus:

    1500 pt Army
    CCS – Meltagun – V.Weapons Team; Autocannon – Vox - Chimera – 130

    PCS – Meltagun – Chimera – Weapons Team; Autocannon – Vox – 110

    IS 1 – Grenade Launcher – Weapons Team; Autocannon – Vox – 70

    IS 2 – Grenade Launcher – Weapons Team; Autocannon – Vox – 70

    IS 3 – Grenade Launcher – Weapons Team; Autocannon – Vox – 70

    VS 1 – Shotguns – 3x Meltagun – 100
    - Vendetta Gunship – 130

    VS 2 – Shotguns – 3x Meltagun – 100
    - Vendetta Gunship – 130

    VS 3 – Shotguns – 3x Meltagun – 100
    - Chimera 55

    Devildog – Hull HB - 120

Leman Russ BT – Hull HB – 150

    Leman Russ Demo – Hull H.Flamer - 165

    1500 pt Army
    CCS – Meltagun – V.Weapons Team; Autocannon – Vox - Chimera – 130
not a vox fan as they don't help mounted squads. I'd honestly lose the vet weapons team and go with 4 special weapons. obvious choices being meltas, grenade launchers or plasmaguns. to make use of the autocannon this unit is going to have to sit still.

    PCS – Meltagun – Chimera – Weapons Team; Autocannon – Vox – 110
Again i'd drop this weapon team and vox in favor of 4 special weapons, 4x flamer is a popular choice. The massed flamer fire guarantees lots of hits and gives you some swarm defense.

    IS 1 – Grenade Launcher – Weapons Team; Autocannon – Vox – 70

    IS 2 – Grenade Launcher – Weapons Team; Autocannon – Vox – 70

    IS 3 – Grenade Launcher – Weapons Team; Autocannon – Vox – 70

Good load-out for your infantry squads. You might want to look at the combined squads rule in your codex and throw in a commissar or two

    VS 1 – Shotguns – 3x Meltagun – 100
    - Vendetta Gunship – 130

    VS 2 – Shotguns – 3x Meltagun – 100
    - Vendetta Gunship – 130
Since the vet squads are loaded out as tank killers with assault potential, you might consider giving them the demolitions doctrine. This would give them all meltabombs and one model in the squad gets a demo charge. The demo charge would give ou a high str large blast template to play with and the meltabombs would be increased confidence in tank busting

    VS 3 – Shotguns – 3x Meltagun – 100
    - Chimera 55

    Devildog – Hull HB - 120
This unit is a tank killer, i see no benefit to not taking a hull multimelta

Leman Russ BT – Hull HB – 150

    Leman Russ Demo – Hull H.Flamer - 165

Heavy support looks solid to me

Overall the list is an improvement. If the models are already built, play a game or two and see how you like it.

Was wondering about that, will see if i can balance it in within the 1,500 pt guideline.

    VS 1 – Shotguns – 3x Meltagun – 100
    - Vendetta Gunship – 130

    VS 2 – Shotguns – 3x Meltagun – 100

90 pts in total, will be a squeeze!

    VS 3 – Shotguns – 3x Meltagun – 100
    - Chimera 55

    Devildog – Hull HB - 120
This unit is a tank killer, i see no benefit to not taking a hull multimelta

Originally did have when I was working this out again, but dropped it for point saving. If I drop Voxs I should be able to squeeze it in no problem.

Overall the list is an improvement. If the models are already built, play a game or two and see how you like it.

Not bought yet, I want to have a solid list before I buy this time, I dont want a repeat of my steel-legion mistake...

I didn't twig on having commissars in the combined squads! Marvelous idea!

Also want to say a big thanks for your help its really appreciated!

It's no problem at all. We all started at square one. People were there to help me and I am more than happy to do the same.

From a structural stand point you could probably afford to lose the 3rd vet squad at 1500 points to flush out some of the other options. A good rule of thumb that I picked up from Sandwyrm is number of scoring units = (points/500 ) +1, or at 1500 4 scoring units minimum. Your list has PCS, 3x vet squad, and a 30 man combined squad for a total of 5.
