Hey guys my friend wants to make a 1k imperial guard army for a tournament, so recommendations are welcome, he doesn't have much right now so any list would be very useful... thanks in advance... eXo
Hmm... what kind of list does he want? Mech? Hybrid? Footsloggers? Lotsa tanks? Artillery? Be slightly more specific and give limitations on models.
“When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why the poor have no food, they call me a Communist.”
Okay, well we want Hybrid with lots of tanks... if possible...
Should probably describe the differences:
Mech is...well, everything in vehicles. So chimeras for everyone, lots of tanks. It's pretty much the standard choice around here.
Footsloggers are obvious. Very little armour at all, maybe artillery, maybe walkers, but that's about it.
Artillery is also obvious, lots of artillery units: Manticores, Medusae, etc..
Air calvary usually involves building a list around 2 valkyries and 2 Vendettas (or so, I'm rough on the edges).
Hybrid is similar to Mech, but the platoons aren't in chimeras (usually nothing is). The points saved from this go towards bringing more vehicles (or making larger platoons). Vendettas double for transports.
I run Hybrid 90% of the time.
I'll post a quick 1k list I put together. Gives you a demolisher, but also gives you two Vendettas, two veteran squads loaded out for anti-tank, and a platoon with 3 squads, all with autocannons and grenade launchers.
Company Command squad
->Company Commander Bolt Pistol (points left over)
->4x Grenade Launcher
Platoon Command Squad
->4x Grenade Launcher
Platoon squads 1, 2 and 3
->Grenade Launcher (3 total)
->AutoCannon (3 total)
Veteran Squads 1 and 2
->Bolt Pistols for Sgts. (left over points)
->3x Meltagun Each
both squads inside....
->Heavy Bolter Sponsons
Leman Russ Demolisher
Your vendettas would remain in reserve, with the Veterans inside of them.
Your Line squad would be deployed on your objectives or at the rear of your deployment area. Their autocannons *should* be able to hit anything on the field. The Company and Platoon command squads can stay behind cover and take pot-shots if something gets close.
Russ moves up.
When Vendetta comes in via outflank, unload everything you can. If you're near a couple of tanks, have the veterans jump out and melta the tank, while the Vendetta targets something else. Remember: In this setup, the Vendetta is not just a tank hunter. That is it's primary job, but it is also very good at killing heavy infantry (terminators and such) with the heavy bolter sponsons on board. If there are terminators near your veterans, toss your det-pack. Enemy infantry squads will simply vanish.
What this gives you:
6 Scoring Units (PCS, 3 line squads, 2 Veteran Squads), two Vendettas, in a dual Anti-Tank, Anti-Heavy Infantry role. Veterans dedicated anti-tank, but with Det Pack to toss on infantry.
Platoon squad that can use it's autocannons to disable and stun transports coming towards you, and enough grenade launchers to put wounds on MCs or groups of soldiers (as a rule, if there are 3 models close-ish together, go for the blast mode. Even though it's weaker, sheer number of wounds usually balances it out).

Grenade Launchers *are* worth it. For a pittance, you're getting a single shot high-strength assault weapon at S6. This alone makes it pretty good at wounding most MCs, stunning transports, and if lucky, side and rear armour shots. The AP4 ain't bad either. What really makes it shine, though, is the S3 blast mode. Even though it's at much lower strength (wounding marines on 5s), and less AP, on squads it can actually put out a good number wounds. All from 24 inches away. The alternatives at the same cost are the Sniper Rifle (why bother? The Grenade launcher will wound most things on a 4 or less anyway), or the flame thrower (fine weapon, though requires you to be a bit closer, better used in numbers, not so much on platoons).
In the list above, It's got a theoretical 11 Grenade Launchers. That's pretty beefy! 11 S6 shots! Mind you, only about half (well, slightly above half) will hit, but against MCs, that's putting out a good number of wounds!
In addition, that's 11 S3 blast templates. That's not too shabby either! It's strong against hordes for this very reason.
As for Storm Troopers, they're a fickle unit. I use them at any match over 1500 religiously. I equip them with Plasma rifles and have them deep strike behind enemy lines using their accurate deployment rule, usually to kill off or damage a squad on a capture point. Usually I'll give their commander a power weapon (They're not terrible in combat by virtue of number of attacks, but not great. Power weapon helps them finish off the remnants of a squad).
For example, last game I played, I had them deep strike next to a marine squad on a rear capture point. They easily wiped them out. The Deep Strike was perfect, the Hot Shot Lasguns and Plasma rifles did their job just fine. I then jumped them in a Vendetta and went to redeploy them.
So...yes, I think they're worth it, but they're pricey, so at 1000 points, no way. At 1500? Maybe, but at 1750? Definitely, in my lists anyway. When I do run them, it's usually at minimum squad size, or at +1 or 2. Never more then that (usually only as a points dump, though Marbo takes precedence here).
Plus, it gives me an excuse to use the awesome Karsikin models more often.
Don't forget to charge non-walkers with your Veterans! The Demolitions doctrine not only gives them their Det pack, but every one gets a melta bomb. Simply terrifying!

Good points. It also saves you 10 points too, which can be very useful!
Unfortunately my friend and I were talking and he decided to try and save money... so pretty much we can only buy a battleforce and a only a couple more things right there... so could you help build us a list that uses the models in there?
We haven't bought anything yet so feel free to use the Catachan or Cadian Battleforce...
I'm going to give it a shot, using two battle forces, two demolishers, two chimeras, and a blister of melta guns.
With 8 points left over to use on bolt pistols or whatever you like.
Company Command Squad
->2x Grenade Luancher
Platoon Command Squad
->2x Grenade Launcher
Platoon Command Squads 1 and 2
Veteran Squads 1 and 2
->3x Meltagun (each)
->1x Lascannon (each)
Both inside Chimera
Scout Sentinel x2
I'm sure someone here could do better, but this uses 2 battleforces, a meltagun blister, 2 demolishers and 2 Chimeras.
