quite new to the forum and just started a guardsmen army. I love the look of tanks especially leman russes and chimeras, so i feilded my list so that everyone would be mounted in a transport.
So, here is the list:
lord commisar - 100
power sword, carapace armour and a plasma pistol (rides with autocannon veterans)
Veteran squad - 155
2 meltas, autocannon and chimera with multilaser and heavy bolters
Veteran squad - 145
2 meltas and chimera with multilaser and heavy bolters
Leman russ battle tank - 150
Leman russ exterminator - 150
Leman russ battle tank - 150
Welcome to the ranks of the Imperial Guard, friend. It's always nice to see new recruits.
If you want to go mech, Chimeltas will be your primary units. These are Veteran squads with 3 meltaguns in a Chimera, usually armed with a multi-laser and heavy flamer. So my first advice to you is to drop the autocannon from the Vets and get another meltagun in both squads. AC's are really good at taking out transports at long range though, so I'd definitely recommend a squad of three Scout Sentinels armed with those. They are probably better at this than the Exterminator (can't say for sure as I've never used one).
Lord Commissars are rerely seen, and are quite a waste in a mech army as their Ld10 and Aura of Dicipline won't do any good since all your squads will be mounted in vehicles and are immune to morale checks. A ccs with 4 meltas and a Chimera will work better. Also, three tanks are a bit much at this point level. One is enough, but if you want lots of tanks, at least drop the Exterminator to get a Sentinel squad. Otherwise, you could drop two and also get a Hellhound as they are really good and not to be overlooked, preferably one armed with a multi-melta.
LRBTs are infantry killers you will need some long range anti-tank/anti-transport. Vendettas would do this as would a Multimelta armed Hellhound. I would recommend dropping two russes to grab a pair of MM armed hellhounds. I would also keep the exterminator and add a Hull lascannon to it.
Running 2 Vet. squads in a list this size is doable (3 would be better, maybe at 1000 ). I would drop the autocannon as the squad should be moving almost all of the time, and as SoraingDust mentioned, give each squad its 3rd meltagun. These units synergize well with the MM armed hellhounds. A good turn one is a 12 in move with all 4, the Chimeras pop smoke, while the Hellhounds paste any transports w/in range, if none they can torch some infantry. On turn 2 you will be happily mid-board with lots of flaming & melta death at your disposal.
On the HQ choice, a Primaris Psyker is probably best for a mech list under 1000 points. He can use his nasty shooting attack from a firepoint on the chimera he rides in. That also frees up another 30 points. You could use those points to buy upgrades for your sergeants.
