Hi guys having just been tabled by a BA mech list i think it's time to rethink my army.
HB attack bike
2 Plasma Guns
HB attack bike
MM attack bike
This is 1750 to take it to 2000 i tend to add a command squad. The problem is a year ago this list worked great at my local store, lots of foot armies only 1 or 2 pieces of armour. However things seem to have moved on and plenty of competitive mech lists have appeared especially Marines and their brethren. I found i massively lacked the ability to destroy 8-10 pieces of armour before assault cannons, las cannons and auto cannons ripped my typhoons and bikes to shreds. Please help me regain some dignity and try to make this list more competitive.
Hmm, if you drop a typhoon you could add a combi-melta to the sergeant on all the squads that don't have their own meltas - and powerfists will also help you crack tanks. Thinking about it, you could drop a whole typhoon squadron and get a scout bike squad with powerfist serg, as they can get a turn 1 charge - and that's almost always a dead tank if you went first.
Either way, it's a good list imo. Shame about the lack of relic blade on the captain but I can see why you spent the points elsewhere.
I run pretty much the same list but have found a tooled up ironclad drop podding in has really done some damage. It drops down clost to a tank or semi-vulnerable foot slogger squad and begins heavy flaming and melta gunning. Often forces the opponent to attack it leaving my bikes relatively unharmed so they can get into position and do their melta blast from very close range.
I've been considering a dropped ironclad but was worried it would die after 1 turn, how have you found its survivability?
I've never gone for power fists as i don't believe bikes should be in combat but seeing as all i'm being presented with these days is a wall of armour without a troop insight it may well be a plan. I was looking at dropping some typhoons for MM attack bike squad but will have to think on the scouts after seeing what my opponents scouting baals did to my speeders.
I'm loathe to go all melta in my bike squads but it may be the only way. I've decided i don't really need the flamers as the TL bolters seem to torrent infantry happily enough. Maybe 2 melta squads and 2 plasma squads so there is some anti-mech in all squads.
My big problem was that i had set up for first turn and then he seized initiative and all but 1 speeder was wiped out by the 3 baals with assault cannon and heavy bolters. While his 2 tl lascannon preds and 4 las/plas razor backs killed 2 vindicators. This left me horribly short on long range fire power and anti mech.
All in all i've got to admit i'm a bit stumped. It doesn't help that i've only manged 2 games in the last few months.
Make sure you start in as much cover as you can get - so any AP1/rending hits are mitigated slightly. If having the initiative stolen is the worst thing that could happen, it WILL happen
I at least like powerfists in my melta squads, so even if the meltas somehow fail I've got a backup and hopefully don't have to be shooting at the same tank again the following turn.
The more i think about it the more sense it makes. If you're going to sacrifice a unit, which getting into melta range pretty much does with bikes then the powerfist makes sense to either finish the vehicle in CC or take on whatever unit charges you as retaliation.
Any have any luck with a shooty command squad 4x melta or 4x plasma? How do you run your command squad against a mech list or is adding more melta squads or even something else more efficient?
Anyway i'm working so i'll ponder it some more. Thanks for the replies guys it's always appreciated.
I suggest canning the flamer squads in favour of melta squads - the TL bolters do pretty good anti-infantry anyways, but killing tanks is a top priority this day and age.
Instead of doing any usefull work today i've been thinking. I know, it hurts. Thought about trying these ideas out
3 Veterans Melta, Thunder Hammer, Storm Shield
MM attack bike
Heavy Flamer or 2 x Vindicator dozer blade
2 TL Autocannons
Either that or stick to original list drop one vindicator upgrade all squads to be melta and add a fist to each squad for 1750.
Or to take original list to 2000 use 5 TH/SS terminators and librarian with gate and avenger instead of a command squad and upgrade all to melta squads.

That new list isn't bad, actaully. You should really be running the Vindicators in 3's though. You should probably drop a rifleman for that.
