So, I come here seeking assistance building a 1,500-point Mechanized IG force. I am currently serving with the US Army in Afghanistan, and intend to start this army once I get home this summer. My biggest handicap right now is that I lack a copy of the latest IG Codex, so coming up with an accurate list of point costs for various units is proving difficult. After alot of reading (alot of it done on this forum), and some guess work, here is what I am toying with as a list:
1x CCS w/4x Flamers, 1x Chimera w/ML and hull HB
*Can the CCS be accompanied by 2x IN SQD and count as a Troops choice?
1x PCS w/4x Flamers, 1x Chimera w/ML and hull HB
4x IN SQD w/2x Flamers and AC each, 4x Chimera w/ML and hull HB
2x Leman Russ MBT w/hull LC and sponson HB
3x Scout Sentinel w/AC
Assessment: For starters, I'm not even sure if I can afford these units and be under the 1,500-point cap. I've seen various army lists with many different point costs listed for these units. Based on the law of averages, I think I can afford what I have above (any one with a copy of the new codex and a calculator is welcome to provide input). Depending on how the points shake out, I may add a few HK missiles into the mix somewhere, or some Heavy Weapons squads. The other, more obvious option, is to just field exactly what I want and throw the 1,500-point cap out the window.
Tactics: I belive this army will primarily be facing off against Orks, Tyranids and Necrons. I'm hoping that the inclusion of many template weapons and hull-mounted HBs will serve to handle light foot-mobile swarms as my mechanized infantry form up into a "castle-style" battle line. The Russ's will be on anti-armor/creature patrol, while the Sentinels run around looking for soft-skin vehicles and medium infantry. By fielding 2x Russ's, 6x Chimeras and 3x Sentinels I'm fairly sure I've achieved armor saturation of the battlefield while keeping the overall force extremely mobile.
Alternatives: Being in the Army has given me a love of ground-pounding infantry and armored vehicles, so I am a self-proclaimed "tread head". To that end, I have attempted to lay out this force in the "theme" of an actual mechanized infantry company. But, that would require an additional 1x PCS w/Chimera, and preferably 2x mortar sections. I would have loved to include another tank, but at 1,500 points, these additions are not realistic. Depending on the point costs for the units above, I have considered the following possibilities:
Trading the Sentinels for 2x Hellhounds
Trading the Fast Attack category for Heavy Weapons squads; most likely Mortars
Trading the Sentinels for a Valkerie and some Storm Troopers.
Any and all suggestions are more than welcome. As I said, I still have approximately 6 months before I can begin making this force into a reality. In the Army we call it the "2/3,1/3 rule"...spend 2/3 of your effort planning, and 1/3 on execution of that plan. I want the force to be competetive, but I also want to keep it small enough to play relatively short games and not have to devote an entire room of my house to model storage. Please advise, thanks.
HQ: Don't put flamers on BS4 models arm the CCs with 3-4 plasmas in a chimera.
Troops: You need 2 troop choices. A platoon counts as one no matter how many squads are in it. PCS is good in a chimera. I would put the squads on foot with AC+GL each. Use the points for a second platoon or 10 vets with 3 meltas in a chimera.
Heavy: Take standard russ with 1 or 3 HB. or take demolisher with hull lascannon and no sponsons.

So after a few replies and some additional advice, I've considered tweaking the list. Below is the revised army list.
CCS w/4x GL, 1x Chimera w/ML and hull HB
4x Veteran SQD w/3x MM, 4x Chimera w/ML and hull HF
2x HWS, 1x w/AC, 1x w/Mortars
3x Scount Sentinel w/AC
2x Leman Russ MBT w/hull LC and sponson HBs
I see the CCS using their GLs to provide a sort of "hip-pocket" indirect fire support while remaining close enough to the Veteran SQDs to utilize special orders when necessary.
The Veteran SQDs will be able to use their slightly higher BS and MMs to deal equally well with infantry and light armor threats. By equipping the Veteran's Chimeras with HFs, there should be enough template weapons to handle infantry hordes. HWS will provide additional fire support against medium infantry, light vehicles and the inclusion of the mortar's blast templates to help soften up foot-mobile hordes before they reach the main battle line.
The Russes will remain on anti-armor/creature duty, while the Sentinels will retain the job of hunting soft-skin vehicles, medium infantry and trying up enemy elite units if necessary.
Alot of people have been preaching the need for plasma-based weapons. I understand their utility, but the cost-benefit seems a little unbalanced. It seems to me that in place of buying plasma weapons, I could field an additional unit, or upgrade an existing unit, which would increase the overall performance of the army. Again, comments and advice are encouraged.
THe HWSs require an infantry platoon to field dropping a pair of vet squads would pay for a mech platoon. I'd also dispense with the sponsons on the tanks as it kills their mobility.
Plasmas are nice for TEQs and MCs.

As an alternative, what about fielding the following:
PCS w/GLs, 1x Chimera w/ML and hull HB
2x IN SQDs w/ACs and GL, 2x Chimeras w/ML and hull HB
The PCS and 2x IN SQDs can be used to hold objectives and provide cover fire. Once they disembark, their Chimeras can be released to act as light tanks. The CCS and Veteran SQDs, likely accompanied by the Sentinels, well be used as more of an "action arm" to takecontest objectives. I believe these elements would have enough armor support and personnel to function independently if necessary. Opinions?
Maybe this is just me being vain or foolish, but I don't want to utilize dismounted IN SQDs in this army. My vision is to have a force where literally every unit has wheels of some sort; truly mechanized. In place of wheels, wings will suffice. To that end:
CCS w/4x GLs, 1x Chimera w/ML and hull HF
4x Veteran SQDs w/3x MM each
4x Chimeras w/ML and hull HF each
3x Scout Sentinels w/AC
2x Leman Russ MBT w/hull LC, no sponsons
I believe this will make up the core of the force, and there are plenty of points left over for additions. The question is what is the force truely lacking? I had thought about bringing a Valkerie, transporting another Veteran SQD, to act as an assault force and grab objectives. The Valkerie can then attack the enemy flanks/rear, or remain on station to support the Vet SQD until the rest of the army arrives. Alternatively, I may simply field as many additional Veteran SQDs in Chimeras as possible to have more armored vehicles and "warm bodies" at my disposal. Lastly is the option to include another Russ, enabling me to lay down a comforting blanket of firepower and dominate the table with armor saturation. Does any of this sound feasible, or am I setting myself up for a "Little Big Horn" scenario?
I don't think that it is vain. I think the point is that with a mechanized force, you will have to do without HWSs. I run a mech army myself and it values mobility over static firepower. I think that the latest rev looks pretty solid.
Praise the Emperor and pass the promethium!
List looks nice. I would upgrade the russ to demolishers and drop a sentinel for the points. Leaves 10 free for a HK missile or to make one vet squad armed with some plasmas.

Thanks for all the advice and critiques. I'm looking forward to the chance to begin making this force into a table-top reality.
As I stated earlier, I'm currently sitting in Afghanistan without access the new IG Codex. Is there any chance somebody has a little free time and a calculator, and can possibly tell me what the point total for my current list would be? Depending upon how many points are left over, I'll start to narrow down exactly what upgrades are possible. As always, recommendations are welcome...apparently I should spring for some plasma-based weapons.
Thanks again for all the assistance!
