I've been playing a Chaos army for about 7 years now and have decided to make a Renegade Guard army, using tons of FW pieces. I have no idea what to get as I don't have the IG Codex. I need some help making a solid list, but I want to have Ogryns and Stormtroopers in it as I really like the models, and stats. As far my gameplay style I would like to keep transports at a minimum although not getting rid of them all together, and I play like a Medium to close range shooty play style. Hopefully you guys can help me out and fast.
Yeah I play Nurgle?
Ogryn are close combat monsters, whereas stormtroopers are nasty at any range but probably best in a support role outflanking or deepstriking to harass the backfield. A mid ranged army won't work well with these guys but if you gear it for assault, then it'd be fairly nasty.
Anyway there's a few options with using Ogryn, all of them involve combining them with a good HQ to get the most of their close combat abilities.
The Rolls Royce option is Yarrick + as many Ogryn as you really can afford, it's as close as the IG come to a deathstar. The downside is it will eat up a huge amount of points. He does make them very very nasty though. It's hard to say no to a guy who makes them fearless and rerolls their hits in CC.
The other obvious picks are either Straken or Creed as they both offer ways to get furious charge into your army. Creed has a much wider bubble that he can influence while Straken is more reliable.
Either way, once you start down the close combat route it's hard to pull back. To make any of the HQ options work you need to take substantial quantities of infantry. The best option I find is a blob of at least 30 inf with a commissar or Yarrick's stubborn aura and a company banner so they don't run.
The key to this kind of list will be good fire control. Although the battle will be decided at the point of the bayonett you will need to use orders like "Front rank fire! Second rank fire!" to really maximise your lasgun output in that critical 0-12 inch range. Screening the main force with disposable troops like special weapon squads swinging demo charges or tarpits like armoured sentinels can be pretty effective.
Stormtroopers work great with a couple of melta/plasma in a chimera set to outflank so that could comprise your armoured element. Since creed can outflank any other unit you could add a tank in there too if you opt to take him.
Really the first thing to do is to beg borrow or steal a copy of the IG codex so you can get your head around all the parts. Don't rush your army, plan it out very carefully and proxy a few games if you are unfamiliar with the units. An army is too expensive and time consuming to make mistakes with, especially ones that can be avoided with some preparation. The dark gods will be pleased when your patience pays off.
Copy, Improve, Innovate
Thanks alot I'll probably pick up the Battleforce, and extra Cadian squad, Yarrick, some Ogryns, and Stormtroopers (proxying many of course.) Then once I have a feel for the army I'll add some more Cadian guys, a Leman Russ, and more Ogryns and Troopers. I'd give you Rep if I knew how too, new to blogging in general.
Yeah I play Nurgle?
I routinely use regular cadians and designate them as storm troopers and never get complaints for it.
Praise the Emperor and pass the promethium!
