I have enterred into a campaign at my local gaming store and will be up against a few seasoned pros and a couple green veterans like myself. I have been modelling for some time now just not actually competing. So I am looking for a little (actually a lot) of critique and ideas on how to improve the list that I have currently put together.
So here it is:
HQ - Librarian (Avenger, Vortex of Doom) - 100
EL - 6 Sternguard (3xCombi-Melta), Drop Pod - 200
TR - 5 Scouts with Snipers + ML - 85
5 Tactical (Power Fist) - 115
The Librarian is with the Sternguard in the Drop Pod. The only real rules of the campaign is 1 HQ + 1 TR and then limited to only one choice from Elite, FA, and HS.
Any feedback is welcome, thanks

I think the sternguard are a great choice for a small game. With a drop pod you could plant them where you want them on the first turn. Also using a drop pod would save you a few points and allow you to add more Sternguard. Combi weapons are good but if you loose two of them and the melta bombs on both squads you might get a 7th Sternguard. Their special ammo alone would make up for the loss of the combi flamers.
So, I have played this list 5 times and the count is 0-1-4 ... not too good.
Unfortunately all of my opponents were not new players like myself and felt it was a little more fun to run me over with the bus. At least I learned a few things from the bruises.
I noticed there was not a lot of posts to my initial list but I will still ask if there are any out there who play 500 - 750 point games with space marines and have had any real luck with their lists, any tip would be appreciated since I plan on expanding from this list as I create my own chapter. I plan on throwing together something new shortly and will post that list (and hopefully a win as well ... ).
Thanks in advance guys

If you're looking to run other people over with a bus, you need to cheese it out a bit. I generally suggest Vindicators for something like this - they're too fragile to really be good for higher point levels, but they're downright nasty at anything from 1000 points downwards.
I like to use a themed force for small games, usually including a Tac Squad, scouts, and a few light supporting units, like Assault marines, Dread, Rhino transport, or Land speeders. I like using the librarian for his flexibility in small games...he gets a PW and choice of 2 powers, and that Psychic hood comes in handy against Eldar and Chaos. Sometimes I use a jumping Chappy to lead my assault marines though. I'm thinking of trying a Captain with Command squad filled with storm bolters to see how they do. The main thing is, I try to keep all my units mobile. Move and shoot, move and shoot, assault when a favorable opportunity arises.
