Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hi, I'm new to 40k. Played Warhammer Fantasy for a couple years and after looking at the dark angels fluff I've decided I really want to start a deathwing/ravenwing force (seems more interesting than vanilla marines). I managed to get a good deal on some models, and as this is a "secondary army" I'd prefer not to sink a bunch of money into it, so if I could make due with the models I have that'd be great.
1 Terminator Chaplain, storm bolter
20 Terminators (10 Aobr, 10 Assault) have 20 thunder hammer and storm shield bits, 5 pairs of lightning claws along with a chainfist
1 ravenwing Battalion (6 bikes, landspeeder, attack bike)
It's not a huge issue if I have to buy additional bits to out fit the terminators (chainfists, assault cannons, etc), I'd just prefer to avoid buying more models (i.e. landraider...). And obviously I'd have to convert a Belial model.
The list I came up with looked like this:
Belial, lightning claws, 130pts
Deathwing Termies, all with TH/SS, Apothacary, add Belial to this squad 245pts
Deathwing Termies, 3xSB/PF, 1xAssault Cannon, 1 with Cyclone Missile Launcher, Sergeant with Power Weapon and SB 265pts
Ravenwing Attack Squad, 3 bikes, Sergeant w/ Meltabombs and Power Weapon, 2xbikes with meltas
Attack Bike with Multimelta
Ravenwing Support Squadron Landspeeder with assault cannon and heavy bolter 100pts
Plan would be to deploy attack bikes and use their scout rule in conjunction with their teleport homers to drop Deathwing assault termies with Belial into position to assault the nasty things, before the bikes zoom off to melta-ize tanks. The other unit of terminators will fulfill more of a tactical role and provide some midrange firepower with the assault cannon, missile launcher and SB's. The landspeeder is there to fire away with the assault cannon and provide additional firepower, zoom around and target enemy heavy weapons teams, etc.
Thoughts? I'm really new to 40k, read through the rulebook, but still coming to terms with some of the differences between it and fantasy (namely the vehicles). My main concern is the lack of troops. 1000pt army with only 16 models is really strange to me... Also, I understand this may hurt me in objective based games. Biggest question is, at lower points values would it be better to skip the ravenwing segment all together and go more deathwing orientated? Perhaps add in another terminiator squad to up the model count, then add in the ravenwing if I decide to bump up to 1500pts?
Also, how should I equip the termies? From the internet research I've done it seems as though people have a lot of different opinions as to whether assault is the way to go or if they should be kept cheap and with storm bolters to maintain the range advantage. Tips greatly appreciated.
First off, a Deathwing squad can only have a single weapon upgrade - they're bought on a per squad basis, which means they have to be a part of the squad they're bought with.
Terminators are the same cost for the DA, regardless of the wargear. My preference for them is to give them all hammers and shields for the survivability boost, and to give each squad a Cyclone Launcher on top of that. I'd suggest taking 3 squads like that and filling out the points left with something else.
You'll find that killing vehicles in 40k is a completely different animal from killing the various sorts of infantry. It'll take some adjusting to get used to. Deathwing does tend to be a low model count army as well, but they're generally worth it.
Thanks for the response.I'm unsure what you mean by "weapon upgrades are bought on a per squad basis" though. Does this mean the squad can only have a CML or an AC?I'll get rid of the landspeeder and attack bike and drop the bikers to 3 (Serg with meltabombs and bikes with meltaguns).Hopefullu I'll have enough points to add another squad of termies. From what I've read on the forums it seems as though TH/SS is the way to go...however it just seems so boring to play. For this reason alone I'd prefer to leave the mostly SB/1 AC squad. Potentially replace one PF with a chain fist as well. The squad I add will be either SB with one CML or TH/SS with one CML.Thoughts?
Well first off I'd like to say that in case u didn't know Cyclone missiles are heavy 2 missile launchers, so are typhoon missile launchers.
So on your termies i would recommend 4x TH/SS with one CML and one guy with lightning claws.
I would cut the bikes down to 3x bikes with two melta guns, sergeant with PF, and 1x attack bike with multi melta.
Land Speeders as long as you running one your best point is the 75 point Typhoon ML/Multi Melta combo This should save you a few points to play around
SB termies are somewhat workable at lower point levels - we recommend TH/SS for a reason though, as in larger games there's enough AT weapons floating around to make regular termies pretty vulnerable to them.
First off, welcome to the Dark Angels, they will be a very hard army to play mainly do to their low model count. Yes the bikes are T5 and the termies have 2+ save, but they can still only take so many hits before going down. So the best bet is to minimize the amount of hits coming at you by using terrain.
Over all I think it will be ok. You will have trouble in lower point games due to the lack of models. And a break down as to the wargear set up. If you want anti-infantry/hoard, SB termies are good to have for shooting, and lightning claws are good for assault. Because you get a bunch of shots with SB, and more hits without going last with your lightning claws. If you want anti-tank/MEQ, TH/SS is the way to go. They will strike last but they have an increased survivability due to the SS, and higher strength hits with the TH. Which is why you see squads mixed with both. The TH/SS, and Lightning claws thing goes for the HQs as well. I am thinking about running Belial with TH/SS for surviability, and have my chaplain who comes with a Power weapon go with my anti infantry squad.
As for the assault cannon, they are no longer needed really. Because you could give them a SB/CML and they will have the same number of shots as the assault cannon, and with a frag missile shot have the chance of doing more hits. Remember, you can shoot the CML and the SB from the terminator. Same goes for the landspeeders too, Trade the assault cannon for a TML, and leave it with a HB for anti-infantry/hoard or MM for anti-tank. Although you can not do this to the speeders that count as troops.
For the bikes, either give the sergeant a power weapon with melta bombs, or a PF. I prefer power weapon with melta bombs, but its up to you.
And remember, Dark Angels are mainly a shooty army. But they are blessed with the speed of the Ravenwing and the toughness of the Deathwing. They are good in close combat, but will not beat a assault army, and they are good at shooting, but will not beat a gun-line. That being said, use each of their strengths to win, Ravenwing speed and Deathwing toughness.
Hoped this helped!
