I haven't played 40k in a few years, but the new space wolves stuff looks beautiful. I am considering one of the following two lists for an upcoming tournament at my local store. I don't particularly care about winning, but want something straightforward and easy to play. I've never played in a tournament before.
1500 Pts - Space Wolves Roster - Stone Hammer Strike Force WG
Total Roster Cost: 1500
HQ: Wolf Guard Battle Leader in Terminator Armour
. . 1 Wolf Guard Battle Leader in Terminator Armour with storm shield and thunder hammer; wolftooth necklace, saga of the warrior born
. . . . 1 Fenrisian Wolf
Raensleyar, Rune Priest
. . 1 Rune Priest in Runic armor with plasma pistol and wolftooth necklace
. . 1 Lone Wolf w/ Mark of the Wulfen, wolf claws, and melta bombs
. . . . 2 Fenrisian Wolf
. . 5 Wolf Scouts Pack with plasma pistol and heavy bolter
Grey Hunters: Stoneclaw
. . 10 Grey Hunters Pack with meltagun, plasma pistol, and power weapon
Grey Hunters: Wolfblade
. . 10 Grey Hunters Pack with plasma pistol and power weapon
Grey Hunters: Stone Eagle
. . 10 Grey Hunters Pack with plasma gun
. . 4 Long Fangs Pack with 4 missile launchers
. . . . 1 Squad Leader
. . . . 1 Razorback with twin-linked lascannon
Elite: Wolf Guard Pack
. . . . 1 Wolf Guard in Terminator Armour with assault cannon
. . . . 1 Wolf Guard in Terminator Armour with wolf claws
. . . . 1 Wolf Guard in Terminator Armour
. . . . 1 Wolf Guard in Terminator Armour
. . . . 1 Wolf Guard in Terminator Armour with storm shield and thunder hammer
The alternative, with some minor gear adjustments is to replace the terminator armored wolfguard pack with thunder cavalry and a thunder-wolf mounted battle leader.
Thanks for any feedback.
Hrmmm.... a lot of fat can be trimmed. Just some stuff to think about, conceptually.
Right now it looks like you're running a foot slogging list. If you're doing that, keep a couple things in mind:
1- by being on foot you're giving up not just the speed of deployment, but also the protection that transportation provides. You're going to take a lot of fire walking across the board, and you need to find a way to make sure your units are still an effective squad size when they reach their target. You can do this in a couple ways. You can load up on extra bodies for ablative wounds, though I'd recommend against this because marines make for very inefficient horde armies. You can make your own cover saves, either by having a screen of fenrisian wolves in front of your guys, or using your rune priest with their 5+ cover psychic power. Take a look at what makes green tide armies viable. We can try to use their tricks, though don't expect it to work as well.
2- Vehicles, do or don't. One razorback on the field is you handing your opponent a free kill point. The AV is too low, and it is the only target for all of your opponent's anti-tank. Alternatively, give everybody a transport. They'll protect your troops from small arms fire (making your opponent's bolters useless) and you'll reliably move a lot faster than running.
3- You still need to be able to reach and threaten the backfield. This can be done with outflankers (scouts), suicide squads (drop pod'd combi-melta wolf guard), or just a lot of artillery (long fangs).
As an aside, I generally recommend against having no invulnerable save in games less than 1000points. At the 1000+ level, every squad sergeant has a power weapon or power fist of some sort. So anybody that your lone wolf picks a fight with will usually be able to cause two wounds on him fairly quickly. At a minimum, I'd highly recommend picking up a storm shield for him. It'll drastically increase his survivability. I like termie armour with thunderhammer and storm shield the best, but a lot of folk like running him with wolf claws and a storm shield.
Biggest thing I can recommend adding: a wolf guard squad leader. Your squad needs a power fist. You get assaulted by one dreadnought or one avatar or one spyder and you'll be hating life, watching your squad get taken apart one marine at a time with no ability to retaliate. Power weapon attacks are where your wounds come from. The ability to insta-gib Independant Characters is something you can't pass up.
Biggest advice I can give is: add a couple more power armoured wolf guard so that your grey hunter and scout squads can have power fists. Power fists are good.
I'm just gonna say that was all excellent advice.
Klajorne. Thanks! I appreciate the detailed and very helpful advice. Time to make some changes in my list.
Don't forget to let us know how changes work for you. I can only give general advice, but you'll know better what works for you. Learning how the advice works for you helps us to give advice in the future, and helps the place from becoming an echo chamber.
Good luck and have fun with your wolves. They're a great army. Let us know how the tourney turns out.
