Hi guize, on Saturday we went to the regional finals for the warhammer 40K schools league with the army found here:
http://www.librarium-online.com/foru...int-guard.html (with the third plasma gun replaced with a melta) and it performed rather underwhelmingly to say the least. So I decided I'd take another shot at it, hoping that me and my team would have slightly better luck next year. So anyways...
Command Squad, Chimera
That leaves me with 35 points to spend on upgrades for the commands squad. Maybe 2 plasma guns and a grenade launcher? I was also thinking of replacing the LRBT with a medusa, but I thought that that maybe wasn't such a good idea. Anyways, what do you guys think? What should I give the command squad with the 35 points?
Thanks in advance.
If you want that and just want upgrades for them I would recommend 4x grenade launchers for the CCS and to put a Lascannon on the LRBT.
Before we go fixing your list, you first need to tell us what were the problems you faced running the list. Because, personally, I thought you had a pretty well-balanced list there.
Well let's see, first game was against tau
I suppose this one was lost mainly to bad luck.
His army was something along the lines:
Some kinda battlesuit commander with missile launcher and plasma something (dunno, it just had something s8 and 2 s7)
Another battlesuit of some kind
Squad of 3 battlesuits
2 squads of about 10 kroot
A squad of fire warriors in a piranha
I suppose this one was just a lot of bad luck for me. First turn I moved forwards, and failed to shoot anything due to nightfighting.
On his turn he managed to blow up one of my chimeras. He also turbo boosted his piranha up.
On my turn I shot at his commander with the russ, killing it before it did anymore damage. Chimera and the other squad fired at the battlesuits but failed to do much.
On his turn he rolled 4+ for both outflanking kroot squads, both rolled to come in on my right, in assault range of everything. His other battlesuits shot at the chimera, destroying that. Assault phase saw him making both of my squads destroyed or run off of the board. Pretty much screwed at this point, my russ shot at the kroot, as did marbo (I didn't really care at this point, I was going to lose, but it woulda been better to infiltrate him next to the battlesuits probably). The piranha then shot some kinda melta, destroying my russ, and the kroot killed marbo. So a lot of bad luck, and also playing on 2' by 4' boards wasn't great, as his kroot would basically be able to assault me on the turn they came on, no matter where I put everything.
2nd game I probably lost due to me being stupid, and him passing a rather large amount of 4+ cover saves. His army was something along the lines of:
2 squads of purifiers with some psycannons in razorbacks with plasma guns and lascannons.
Don't remember this game as well, but I know that at one point he had two purifiers from one squad, and 4 from the other, both razorbacks destroyed and crowe. I had both squads left, a partially injured one (from the exploding chimera) in some cover with the objective, and another hiding behind a ruined chimera at the other chimera. I was stupid at this point as I should have moved my guys from behind the wrecked chimera to shoot and kill crowe, but I forgot. The other squad shot some approaching purifiers. Then crow killed the partially injured squad, his purifiers proceeded to kill the other squad, and he managed to destroy the russ with psycannons. Sorry for the bad explanation.
Third game I didn't have any problems annihalating a spammy ork list. Probably because he spent quite a few points on some nobs and stormboyz, which did nothing.
I feel Marbo was the least valuable unit, killing only 6 kroot, 2 grey knights, and about 7 orks and 2 stormboyz.
Feel free to analyse as you wish.
Well, it sounds like you had no problems with the 3rd fight, and the 2nd one went right to the wire, with a bit of bad luck and bad judgement making all the difference. Not bad for a list that was thrown together a few days beforehand
As for the mess with the first fight, one question. This is silly, but I'm going to ask it any way: When you shot at the kroots with Marbo (or anytime you use Marbo against a mob), you did open proceedings with Marbo's demolition bomb, right? S8 AP2 Large Blast?
If you are dissatisfied with Marbo, then your best option is probably to trade him in for a Lord Commissar.
You didn't mention how your primaris psyker performed. If he was not much good either, then replace with a CCS with meltas or a GL/Plasma loadout.
Persoanlly, I'd say keep Marbo and replace the psyker.

Yes, I did use the demolition charge, I'm not that silly
Primaris Psyker did alright I suppose, only problem is that in the game with Grey Knights he got double 1's on his first two tests, and I believe he rolled a double 1 in both of the other games as well, but I suppose he was quite useful for the turns that he was alive, supporting my multi-lasers as mobile light anti tank.
I'm not sure yet, but I think I pretty much have my list figured out now. Command chimera, 4 GL; 2 chimelt squads; and a LRBT with a lascannon.
