I've just started 40k. I play with a friend who has played for a while. He has nids and tau. This is my first 1kpt army. I'm just looking to improve it somehow. I've decided to stay adherent to the codex for now so i can use the ultramarine special chars. I just havnt put any in yet. Im looking to improve the army to fight against tau or nids, which i know to be very different. I thought about using the powerfist and cc weps in my scout and tactical squads but i figured its best to not get in cc with the nids.
Commander, Master Terminator Honors, Terminator Armor, Storm Bolter, Auspex
Command Squad (9) Heavy Bolter, Lascannon
Scout Squad (9) 2 Sniper Rifles, Heavy Bolter All without upgrades have bolters
Tactical Squad (9) Heavy Bolter
Tactical Squad (9) Heavy Bolter
Land Speeder Squadron (1) Typhoon Launcher Typhoon Class speeder
Land Speeder Squadron (1) Assault Cannon Tornado Class speeder
Predator Annihilator Heavy Bolter side sponsons
Unless your deploying by drop pod, or play on a small board, you should probably get a transport of some sort. The heavy bolters sound like a good idea. Just keep 'em in sustained fire and you should be alright. Though I would disagree with the powerfist. You'll most likely have to contend with them in CC one time or another. I have one for each Sargeant in my Tac Squads, that is, if you have any lying around. The Commander box set is great for them. Are you planning on getting any Terminators?
i like the idea of adding some transports. We do play on relatively small maps though. I dont want to sacrifice units so i can pay for em too. I have a feeling that i'm going to need every man i can get. Terminators seem like a good idea too. they are a bit expensive though. I have some in my 2000pt army (will post it soon). Any suggestions on specific unit changes/upgrades are welcome.
If your friend uses Lictors, stay away from terrain like the plauge. You can use it, but stay away from it's assault. That's when a nice powerfist will do good for you. If your on small maps, don't get them. You could foot-slog your way up the board. Keep your units nearby so they can help each other and use the Crossfire rule if you can. Keep them at an arms-length x 15 and just hammer away at them. Terminators with a 4 attack Assault Cannon will bring tears to the eyes of your Tyranid friend, so will Heavy Flamers but you should never let yourself get that close to them. Upgrades, you should be fine.
i do like the idea of the terminator's assault cannons backed up by a land raider or a lrc
that would be fun.
The LRC backed up by two Assault cannon Termies will just lead to some good ol' fashion Tyranid crunching! Yee haw!
i think a squad of three typhoons would be fun too against the nids. they are relatively cheap too. :hmm:
i could make a terminator command squad (9 termies) w/ 2 assault cannons and a lr transport costs 750 lol

As long as you keep 'em moving, Tornados with AC's are a much more solid choice than Typhoon IMHO. As for your force selection, it should be solid. When is your battle? PM me as I would like to know how it goes
we should play this week sometime. ill make sure to let u know how my victory goes (will probably lose in a few turns) i thought that the typhoon launcher was a solid anti-personnel wep???
It's let me down a couple times, Ordinance is alright but best left to a Whirlwind. I gotta go, hope I helped you out. Best of luck Brother, crush the Xenos beneath your power-armoured boot and rely on the strength of the holy Bolter! (Or something to that effect) :p
