    [1500] Imperial Guard {First-Try}

Well I've decided that my next project is defenitly gonna be a guard army. While I love my Necrons, I want to try a more horde army with a crapload of firepower. So plz feel free to rip my list apart as thats the only way I'll learn , thanks in advance:

    Doctrines:
    Veteran Squads
Iron Discipline(added to all officers except HQ officer)

    HQ: 180
Junior Officer: Honorifica Imperialis, Power Weapon and Bolt Pistol
    Anti-tank Squad 1: Lasercannons x3

    Elites: 174
Veteran Sqaud 1: 7 Veterans, 1 Sergant, Plasma Gun x2
Veteran Sqaud 2: 7 Veterans, 1 Sergant, Plasma Gun x2

    Troops:
    Infantry Platoon 1: 305
Junior Officer: Power Weapon and Bolt Pistol
    Squad 1: 9 Guardsman, 1 Sergent, 1 Lasercannon
    Squad 2: 9 Guardsman, 1 Sergent, 1 Lasercannon
    Squad 3: 9 Guardsman, 1 Sergent, 1 Lasercannon

    Infantry Platoon 1: 260
Junior Officer: Power Weapon and Bolt Pistol
    Squad 1: 9 Guardsman, 1 Sergent, 1 Heavy Bolter
    Squad 2: 9 Guardsman, 1 Sergent, 1 Heavy Bolter
    Squad 3: 9 Guardsman, 1 Sergent, 1 Heavy Bolter

    Infantry Platoon 1: 230
Junior Officer: Power Weapon and Bolt Pistol
    Squad 1: 9 Guardsman, 1 Sergent
    Squad 2: 9 Guardsman, 1 Sergent
    Squad 3: 9 Guardsman, 1 Sergent

    Heavy Support: 350
Leman Russ: Lasercannon, 2 Heavy Bolter Sponsoons
Leman Russ: Lasercannon, 2 Heavy Bolter Sponsoons

    Total: 1499

EDIT: I changed some of the point costs as they were simply wrong.

My first question would be this....Which unit will be responsible for taking objectives if needed (loot counters, take and hold, etc.)?

I would assume vet squads, but I don't know if they would make it to their objective. Maybe switch out an infantry platoon and work in an armored fist squad with an assault weapon.

Take Close Order Drill. Iron Discipline and Close Order Drill the top two doctrines that any IG army should have.

    HQ: 180
Junior Officer: Honorifica Imperialis, Power Weapon and Bolt Pistol
    Anti-tank Squad 1: Lasercannons x3
Switch out the Las cannons for Missile Launchers. Saves you some critically needed points. And what about your command squad? You need some special weapons in there as well.

    Elites: 174
Veteran Sqaud 1: 7 Veterans, 1 Sergant, Plasma Gun x2
Veteran Sqaud 2: 7 Veterans, 1 Sergant, Plasma Gun x2
You're off by 4 pts there man. It should be 178 points as it is now. but add a third plasma gun to each squad and a heavy weapon as well. Always max out on the amount of weapons a unit can have.

    Troops:
    Infantry Platoon 1: 305
Junior Officer: Power Weapon and Bolt Pistol
    Squad 1: 9 Guardsman, 1 Sergent, 1 Lasercannon
    Squad 2: 9 Guardsman, 1 Sergent, 1 Lasercannon
    Squad 3: 9 Guardsman, 1 Sergent, 1 Lasercannon

    Infantry Platoon 1: 260
Junior Officer: Power Weapon and Bolt Pistol
    Squad 1: 9 Guardsman, 1 Sergent, 1 Heavy Bolter
    Squad 2: 9 Guardsman, 1 Sergent, 1 Heavy Bolter
    Squad 3: 9 Guardsman, 1 Sergent, 1 Heavy Bolter

    Infantry Platoon 1: 230
Junior Officer: Power Weapon and Bolt Pistol
    Squad 1: 9 Guardsman, 1 Sergent
    Squad 2: 9 Guardsman, 1 Sergent
    Squad 3: 9 Guardsman, 1 Sergent
Now here's the real problem of your list. You have all of your las cannons and heavy bolters in separate platoons. Big mistake. And the fact that you don't even have special weapons in any of your infantry squads and a third platoon with now heavy weapons at all, you're wasting a major amount of points.

First, get rid of that third platoon. It won't do much considering the fact that it lacks any sort of heavy weapons or special weapons. Now you have +230 points.

Second, move a lascannon (NOT lasercannons) around to 2nd platoon. Move a Heavy bolter to 1st platoon as well.

Third, add in some special weapons to your infantry squads to max out on firepower. Plasmaguns and grenade launchers are some good choices. In fact, if I were you, I'd add a grenade launcher to each squad with a heavy bolter and a plasma gun to each squad with a lascannon.

Fourth, add some special weapons to your command squads as well. Command squads can have up to four special weapons and its such a waste not to use those special weapons.

    Heavy Support: 350
Leman Russ: Lasercannon, 2 Heavy Bolter Sponsoons
Leman Russ: Lasercannon, 2 Heavy Bolter Sponsoons
    .
You can't have two heavy bolter sponsoons for each Leman russ. Now you have an extra +20pts

That should move things along a bit. Good luck!

how is having lascannons in one platoon and heavy bolters in the other a big mistake??? aside from maybe chainging deplyment a tiny bit i dont see how what platoon they are in makes a difference since they all act as seperate entities anyway.

I would also consider adding sharpshooter doctrine, and placing it one some of your squads...

It matters in certain missions using the Escalation/Reserves rule. Since platoons are brought on the board by Troop slot rather than by squad, you'll end up with either a mix of heavy anti-tank/anti-infantry weapons or only one kind. Now hypothetic situation...
You'reinot the second turn, and you get a platoon. There's a huge landraider filled with terminators. you desperately need somethat can shoot it down in your third turn, otherwise it's CC choppy nastiness. so what do you do if you roll up the platoon with only heavy bolters? die horribly is prolly the best answer.

    now for the list.

    It's written lascannons.

The vets want all their heavy/special weapon options used, to take advantage of that extra point of BS. trust us, it makes all the difference in shooting.

Mixing heavy weapons in platoons can help, but not essential in most cases.

You only buy the pair of heavy bolter sponsons once, but that points cost gives you 2 heavy bolters. there's 20 points freed up there. that's a few special weapons for the naked platoon you have there, so you can do suicide charges with them. melta's, plasma guns and flamers work best, depending on the army you face most.

Currently, your list has two moderately fast things, your leman russ. since you want them sitting still to shoot that cannon, you'll want to find something else to get you more manuerability. There's the aforementioned Armoured fist squad you could use, or Roughriders, or DSing stormtroopers, or even sentinals. Just think carefully on what you'll trade in for one of them, if you wanna trade in for any of them at all.

Alright, how does this list look? I figure that the most mobile parts of the army will be the infiltrating veterans and the sentinals.

    Doctrines:
    Veteran Squads
Iron Discipline(added to all officers except HQ officer)
    Close Order Drill

    HQ: 212
Junior Officer: Honorifica Imperialis, Storm Bolter & CCW
    Command Squad: Grenade Gun x4
    Anti-tank Squad 1: Lasercannons x3

    Elites: 214
Veteran Sqaud 1: 7 Veterans, 1 Sergant, Plasma Gun x3, Heavy Bolter x1
Veteran Sqaud 2: 7 Veterans, 1 Sergant, Plasma Gun x3, Heavy Bolter x1

    Troops:
    Infantry Platoon 1: 320
Junior Officer: Storm Bolter & CCW
    Squad 1: 9 Guardsman, 1 Sergent, 1 Lascannon, 1 Plasma Gun
    Squad 2: 9 Guardsman, 1 Sergent, 1 Lascannon, 1 Plasma Gun
    Squad 3: 9 Guardsman, 1 Sergent, 1 Heavy Bolter, 1 Grenade Gun

    Infantry Platoon 1: 305
Junior Officer: Storm Bolter & CCW
    Squad 1: 9 Guardsman, 1 Sergent, 1 Lascannon, 1 Plasma Gun
    Squad 2: 9 Guardsman, 1 Sergent, 1 Heavy Bolter, 1 Grenade Gun
    Squad 3: 9 Guardsman, 1 Sergent, 1 Heavy Bolter, 1 Grenade Gun

    Fast Attack: 155
Sentinal Squadron: 3 Sentinals, Autocannon x2, Lascannon x1

    Heavy Support: 290
    Leman Russ: Heavy Bolter
    Leman Russ: Heavy Bolter

How did you get 214? I tallied up the points and each Veteran Squad is worth 109pts. Making the total 218 pts instead. Off by four points again. But nice to see u took my advice and added in the extra weapons.

    Troops:
    Infantry Platoon 1: 320
Junior Officer: Storm Bolter & CCW
    Squad 1: 9 Guardsman, 1 Sergent, 1 Lascannon, 1 Plasma Gun
    Squad 2: 9 Guardsman, 1 Sergent, 1 Lascannon, 1 Plasma Gun
    Squad 3: 9 Guardsman, 1 Sergent, 1 Heavy Bolter, 1 Grenade Gun

    Infantry Platoon 1: 305
Junior Officer: Storm Bolter & CCW
    Squad 1: 9 Guardsman, 1 Sergent, 1 Lascannon, 1 Plasma Gun
    Squad 2: 9 Guardsman, 1 Sergent, 1 Heavy Bolter, 1 Grenade Gun
    Squad 3: 9 Guardsman, 1 Sergent, 1 Heavy Bolter, 1 Grenade Gun
Again you calculated ur points wrong. The 1st Platoon is 318 pts (Iron Discipline already included). The 2nd platoon is 301 pts, not 305.

    Fast Attack: 155
Sentinal Squadron: 3 Sentinals, Autocannon x2, Lascannon x1
Split up the Sentinel Squadron. Putting all three in a squad makes it easier for Autocannon or even a Heay Bolted to wipe them out. U can have three Sentinel Squadrons with just one Sentinel each.

Your HQ and Heavy Support are perfect.

Now ur total is at 1498 with the correct point values.

    Your list is getting better.

Why give the oficers CC weopons cause storm bolters are 2 handed. they wont recieve any bonuses for having the CC weopons and they cost an extra point.

M'kay how does this look. I dropped one of the Infantry squads for some more upgrades, notabley the carapace armor for the veterans. I figure with that much plasma it would be worth it to have a slightly better save. I also included lascannons with the russ's. I fugure that if there is a weapon destroyed result they won't be completley useless to me thanks to the lascannon. As to my officers with the Storm Bolter and CCW weapon, the CCW is primarily decorative. Since all the officer models have a CCW, I figure might as well acually have one for 1 point.

    Doctrines:
    Veteran Squads
Iron Discipline(added to all officers except HQ officer)
    Carapace Armor

    HQ: 213

    Squad 1: 9 Guardsman, 1 Sergent, 1 Lascannon, 1 Plasma Gun

OR this list. As someone else pointed out to me, that is alot of lascannons so I should try to mix things up.
