would appretiate some opinions on the following list.
this is to be used vs a friends Necrons in a 3000 pt game. i've played him several times recently and his deep striking monolith (which i allways fail to damage) usually wins him the game. as i seem to be unable to touch the monolith i have designed this army with the intention of phasing him out and it is far more unbalenced than what i would normally use so should hopfully come as quite a surprise
we are playing on a six by six with quite hgh terrain densitiy and using one standard force organisation chart (his idea- think he wanted to limit my number of tanks) which lead me to think up the following:
HQ : librarian- veil of time, term armour, storm bolter.
term command sqd- 9 terminators, 2x assault cannon
Chaplin- term armour, storm bolter
ELITES: 5 assault terminators- 4 lightening claws, 1 thunder hammer, furious charge.
10 vet marines- ccw, 1 lightening claws, 1 power weapon, frag grenades, vet sgt
with power fist. - sqd has infiltrate.
dreadnaught- assault cannon, extra armour, drop pod.
TROOPS: 10 tactical marines- 2x plas, vet sgt with thunder hammer and combat shield.
10 tactical marines- 1 plas, 1 melta, vet sgt with power weapon and plas pistol
10 scouts- vet sgt power weapon and teleport homer
FAST ATTACK: 10 assault marines- 2x plas pistol, vet sgt power fist and teleport homer
comes in at 2,963 so couple of bits of war gear left to buy.....
idea is to put tac sqds in the two landraiders on one flank, along with the chaplin and assault terminators in the crusader screening the assault marines, as far forward as poss.
then infiltrate the scouts and vet sqd as close as poss and in first turn move every thing forward as quickly as poss. using any available fire power to target his hvy destroyers. then call in 10 terminaters and a dreadnaught. :p
what do you think? will this work?
all opinions greatly appreciated.
thanks in advance.
wow man 3 land raiders? u r overdoing it
The secret to getting necrons to phase out is to beat them in close combat using power weapons (even better using power fists to wound on 2s)
your squads should be maxed out with a vet sgt that has a power fist or at least a power weapon.
Get transports like rhinos
I dont like them, but in this casae you need them.
What are you worried about the monolith?
is it its abilities or its str 10 ap 2 weapon?
if its the weapon, then all your squads should be concentrated on getting into cc as it cant shoot into combat.
Now that i see it, you dont need any land raiders, just focus on beating him in close combat.
Hope i helped
Heh 6 oh 6. THREE Land Raiders !!!! Your dream list at last, eh ? Beardy, power gamer....
Our Necron friend has been asking me all sorts of 'ron related questions this week so watch he doesn't surprise you !!!
I'll say no more because I know no more, honest.

dont listen to him ( :p joking)
drop the land raiders yes they are useless (not entirely ) but they will get wasted.
Instead, have you considered 3 vindicators.
Stick them together if one of them makes it within 24 inches of his units then hes officially f***ed
I don't know what these guys are talking about, but i'd stay with at least 1 LRC and 1 LR, just because the crons are going to have a tough time breaking those beasts open. I would consider maxing out your termy assault squad and putitng it in the crusader because they can assault out of it! One other thing I would suggest: scout bikers, even if you have to proxy these will do very very very very very well. They get the extra scout move in the begining of the game so they have a chance at getting into assault FIRST TURN. You wanted to get to the enemy as fast as possible NOWS YOUR CHANCE. If you have acouple of these squads you will rape him to death. he will not be able to use the Crons amazing firepower and shatter your troops. Even if you don't get first turn there will be pleanty of terrain to cover them. So are you planning to assault him w/ as much as possible, ignore monolith, and tyr and kill him to 25% so he phases?
Oh also make sure you have PF in every single squad because those will really help against those 3+ crons!
For all those landraider haters, you do understand how hard it is to pop those things right? Idk how you guys play them but I'm pretty sure you aren't supposed to put them in a place where all the enemy weapons can get to them.
See power weapons/power fists are not the be all and end all, lords with the right wargeaer can sort that, but yes, the Land raiders need to go.
I would drop the size of your command squad too, they are asking for a template from a monolith, go for 4 or 5 man squad.
ditch the metla gun out the tac squad and replace with plasma gun (better range)
personnaly I would probably lose the veterans as well,
use the freed up points to take pred annihs and deploy them well back, play shoot the monolith/Ctan
then load up on 5 man marine squads with plasma cannons and plasma guns to rip holes in his warriors.
to address both at once, dont bother with the pres but take razorbacks with las cannons for the tac squads
I'm sure that you haven't forgot the Gauss special rule, yet you take three Land Raiders. A Rhino would be just as effective at carrying troops (if that is what you are using them for). Maybe keep one for the assault terminators, but I agree that Vindicators or even Predators would be more effective.
the other tactic of course would be to blast the hell out of his monolith before attacking the rest of his army.
missule launchers are dead effective against necrons (they all have a 3+ save)
Assault squads are also very effective (pick out his destroyers so they cover their points faster)
Nows here another tactic i want to know what you guys think
You know when rhinos blow up, you cant shoot through the wreckage. What if you deliberately put as many squads in as possible so they get blown up and your squads get to use them as cover to the enemy. They wont all blow up in the 1st turn, in fact if you have preds maybe none will blow up. Some of them will make it quite close to the enemy lines, giving your units a close cover to the enemy and dont have to endure as many shots.
Now about the land raiders, you dont need three, but keep one. Im betting all his heavy weapons are going to be aiming at that first turn. Give it extra armor so it can always move. Put terminators in it and use it to cover up 2 vindicators as your other heavy support choices.
If your whole army has vehicles, advance at the same time. When his monolith comes in it will have to shoot at a vehicle which means less casualties.
Hope this helps lol
