This is my friends space wolves list i say the hq is too expensive and doesn't have a purpose here it is
-Ulrick the slayer
-1 landraider 697 pts
heavy flamer 165 pts
10 grey hunters
1 meltagun 190
10 grey hunters
1 meltagun 197
15 blood claws
1 plasma pistol 236
8 bloodclaw bikers
2 powerfists 246
Well there it is i don't know much about spacewolves would you all find in your hearts to help this bumbling commader with his incompetent list please help. I say that the HQ is a big point sink as with the dreadnaught. HHHHEEEEEELLLLLLPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
First of all, he needs more Troops. More Hunters and Claws. And 2 expensive characters in this small an army? By the way, should the HQ unit be more expensive? It seems cheap...
He needs 3 HQ at this size, so the Ven Dread should be an HQ.
Then, drop one of the expensive HQ's and get a cheap WGBL or sth, or a cheap Wolf Priest to lead the Claws. A Wolf Priest with healing balms would be very effective with the Claws.
Then drop a couple of those expensive bikers to take more Hunters, or a Land Speeders.
And the Ven Dread needs extra armour.
I'd completely loose the blood claw bikers, they just aren't worth taking.
Also tell your friend that he can't use true grit with stormbolters, only plain bolters, not even combi bolters either.
that HQ is just ridiculous.. he'll have every heavy weapon the enemy has bearing down on it
and special characters are costly.. [ if your going to use them]
fortune favors the brave

As I said, then he must set it in the HQ section.he has 3 .. the two special characters and the venerable dreadnought
librarian Augustine, SW must have 1 HQ per 750 pts.
Wolf Pack, BC bikers are very much discussed yes. But if you love Bikers... And you have to admit, they do kick a lot of ass, despite of their vulnerability and cost. Besides, they're not the only expensive thing in the list. Well composed and well played, I do believe they can be worth it.
Almost everything is, how disadvanteous it might seem at first.
I didn't know that about the hq thing and i doubt he did either
ok... get rid of the sepcial characters, very few people outside your circle of friends will let you use them, and having two is just plain crazy. use them as a normal Wolf Lord (maybe even a Wolf Gaurd Battle Leader) and Wolf Priest, and use the extra points for more troops and put the Claws in a Rhino, for god's sake! erm, i think that's it. oh yes! scouts would be a good investment to harass and scare the enemy with
FABRICATI DIEM, PVNC
As has already been mentioned, drop the special characters, but if you must keep one, i'd keep ulrik, even though he is the more expensive of the two.
Who is getting the WGBG? and who is going in the landraider? I ask because you don't want both goin in, as as strong as Landraider armour is, it isn't impregnable, and thats a lot of points to lose in a lucky shot!
Depending on what models your friend has got, it could be worthwhile giving Ulrik/Wolf priest a bike and sending him out with the Blood Claws bikers, that way he can tighten their leashes if need be, and give them a re-roll on their first failed save each turn with healing balms and potions.
But it would be worthwhile getting more troops and giving them rhinos also.
There is no army that is bad, but there can be more thought put into armies, but depending on what models your friend has available, will dictate what list he can put together.
Space Wolves are badasses that operate just barely within the rules.
13th Co. didn't even know there were rules applying to how badass they could be.
... and Daemonhunters make it three - now just need a spare room to store it all!!!
