[1500] Cadian Beginner vs. mostly Tau

Hey im just getting into w40k now. I mean ive always wanted to but now i actually can. I have a bunch of friends who just got into it and the goal is for everybody to have 1500 points. Im lagging behind right now because i dont exactly know what to get. I have a few friends who play Tau, Necrons, Tyranids, and Eldar. This is the 1500 points ive made up and i really just want to beat the guy with the Tau. Please give me all the feedback you can.

I use my command squad for leadership. I would give my JO honrofica
so he can have leadership of 9. I believe sharpshooters is not worth the points for
    a command squad

    Special Weapons Squad-Sharpshooters
    3x Guardsmen w/ Lasguns
    3x Snipers
I believe you can not have sharpshooters with snipers. I perfer ratlings snipers over special squad snipers
    Fire Support Squad
    6x Guardsmen w/ 3 Heavy Bolters
    Good

    Elite
Storm Trooper Squad w/ Deep Strike Ability [86]
    7x Storm Troopers w/ Hellguns
2x Storm Troopers w/ Plasma Guns
Veteran Seargeant w/ Power Weapon and Hell Pistol and Melta Bombs
What is your plan with these? Is it for anti-tank or hold objectives.
If anti-tank made squad smaller and get drop troops veterans instead you can get 3 metlas. If for objective it is fine but I have every little luck with melta bombs

    Troop
    Armoured Fist Squad [180]
    2x Guardsmen w/ Lascannon
    6x Guardsmen w/ Lasguns
    1x Guardsmen w/ Melta Gun
Seargeant w/ Laspistol and Close Combat Weapon
Not sure about mixing melta with LC.Also you forget your chimera layout. XChimera will not last long better get smoke so you can run and jump out before the chimera goes boom

    Infantry Platoon [555]

I rather have leman russ with 3 hvy bolters than this. Also your tanks will not last long against tau
    Basilisk w/Indirect Fire Training [125]
I have no idea what training means? but basilisk is fine

The problem you will have with tau is they are anti-tank good. Also the fire warriors have a good wpn with ap 5. I would drop sharpshooters and go with carapace armor against tau normal I do not use it cost too much. Also mortar can help you because the crisis and stealth like to jump out shoot and jump back in assault phase and you will not be able to shoot them. I would put mortar in my command squads. Goodluck playing against the Tau army.

Not a bad list, although a couple of points that I would make.

1.Sharpshooters is a useless doctrine for you HQ squad. It doesn't work with plasma guns in case you didn't know. If you really want to use this doctrine its best to give it to your heavy weapon support squads. In this case your 3 heavy bolter fire support squad. Personally I would drop it from all you squads as you would then be able to buy an additional squad. More shots is better than simply rerolling any 1's you might roll.

    2. I'm with Bonekrusher on the next point, I simply dont rate a sniper special weapon squad. I'd save the points and start investing in a Hellhound. If you can get this unit within range of any of your opponents, bar necrons, they will be in for a world of hurt.

    3. Armored Fist - That lascannon seems wasted in this slot. If you are really keen on an armored fist squad, I'd take the heavy bolter and put the lascannon in a line squad. However, what I would really do if it was my list.. is take the grenadier doctrine and use your stormtroopers with chimera transport as a troops choice. It might be worth while to use the models from the original armoured fist squad (with a little converting) and make them into a hardened vet squad. One of the IG's best units.

    4. Your Russes. Again I'm with bonekrusher. The 3 heavy bolter set up is better by far than the single lascannon set up. Points wise its the same, but you get 9 shots as opposed to 1. Sure the lascannon has good ap, but with 9 shots, you will probably force enough saves that your opponent will fail at least 1 or 2. Of course, you want to be firing your battle cannon as much as possible though, so if all you want is a battle cannon platform, a single hull heavy bolter is the most cost effective method.

    5. So final suggestions.. get a hellhound and a hardened vet squad with the points saved by dropping sharpshooters and the sniper special weapons squad and the armoured fist squad. Replace the armoured fist squad with your stormtroopers (no deepstrike) into a grenadier squad with chimera transport. And use the armoured fist squad models as a staring point for a hardened vet squad, something like a 3 plasma/lascannon set up would be good.
What Guardsmen dont want to hear...

Sorry, but against Tau, even a heavily-armored vehicle like a Russ will get blown apart by railguns. Take a couple of basalisks. If you screen them with enough guys, even Tau will have trouble taking them out. And I agree with bonecrusher and guru about the sharpshooters, lascannons, snipers, ect. But good list altogether, especially since it is your first.

Your command squad is a little fat. The two main tactics are to either use it for Ld or for a fire support platform. Sharpshooters is generaly useless in anything but support squads, so I would drop it - and it won't allow you to re-roll a 1 on a plasmagun. Also - the medic is 11pts. Is he worth it?

Snipers are a marginal choice at best, unless you have a very specific use for them, leave these guys at home, and also - sharpshooting gives them no benefit either, sorry.

Good call on the HB squad.

Your Storm Troopers seem to be halfway between two roles. If you want to deploy them on the board, the rudundancy of 3 more bodies is far more useful than melta-bombs imo. If you want to deepstrike then make them more expendable by loosing 2 guys - melta-bombs tend to be too expensive in both cases. Try Meltaguns if you are DSing.

Your infantry use a combo of HB and PG. This is a poor combo tbh.
Good combos are HB + GL, AC + GL, LC + PG. Try to match the APs and possibly the Str. of the weapon. In this case your plasmagun has a totaly different strength and AP to your H.Bolter and will want to fire at a different target.

Also, the Hull Lascannon isn't a great option on the russ. You are paying 10pts for a single shot weapon on a BS3 tank that will never get to fire in most games. You are better off with a hull heavy bolter, or trading the lascannon for sponson bolters whitch can lay down serious firepower if you loose the battlecannon. But look at it this way: in most games that is 10pts that will never come into play.

Your army comes to 1503pts, this is only a small issue - it may not be a problem in friendlys - but some opponents will refuse to play you if you are over, and I don't like to field overpointed armies if I have had time to prepare. Just a small consideration there.

Other than that, you have the basis of a good army, a solid infantry like and a good tank core, but I think you need to adjust your weapons combos and the role of some of your squads.

If you screen them with guys, the railguns will just shoot past anyway. You might stand a better chance screening them with something that blocks LOS, like cover!

I agree that vs. Tau you really either need to take your strategy away from depending on vehicles, or you need to throw so many vehicles into the list that they just don't know what to shoot at (this can be very effective against tau as the vast majority of their weapons will be good anti-infantry).

But your tanks are something that will be strong against any othert army than Tau, I would suggest leaving them in, and only think about Tau when you have got used to a less specialised army.
