Welcome to Librarium Online!
I wanted an infantry force with reasonably strong shooting. I'm not keen on the tank models apart from the Forge World Bombard and Russ variants.
Traits are See but Don't be Seen and Death Before Dishonour. I took the first trait because I wanted to deploy my devastators last. The second as I didn't want to take a disadvantage trait that had no effect from my opponents perspective. This would I hoped make it easier to persuade them to play Gamma level games where I could infiltrate.
Master with Power Weapon and Combi Melta
7 Marines with one Melta Gun
Deathwatch (White Dwarf 306)
Librarian Codicier with Force Weapon, Bolter and Storm of the Emperor's Wraith
8 Deathwatch Marines, two with Heavy Bolters (can fire on the move at reduced range and can use a Hellfire round like the Tyrannid Hunters)
1 Veteran with Power Fist
All have Melta Bombs and Frag Grenades and are True Grit
8 Marines with Melta Gun and Veteran Sergeant with Powerfist
8 Scouts all with Sniper Rifles
9 Assault Marines with Veteran Sergeant with Power Fist
8 Devastators with Lascannons and Infiltrate
8 Devastators with 2 Plasma Cannons and 2 Heavy Bolters and Infiltrate
8 Devastators with 4 Missile Launcheres and Infiltrate
Strategy is to use the Devastators Infiltrate to get convenient cover and position to do some damage shooting early. Assault Marines, Tac Squad and HQ are for counter attack or to advance and draw the enemy under my guns. The Scouts are there because I like the models and I haven't figured out their best use yet. The Deathwatch should be good value but I haven't figured out how to get the best out of them yet. They've done a lot of shooting but haven't yet got their points back.
I have played two games. One against Black Templars and one against Blood Angels. Both were Gamma Cleanse. On both occasions my opponents agreed to play a Gamma Mission. Very courteous of them. On both occasions I got a quarter with some hard cover for my Devastators and the chance to also put some in hard cover under infiltrate in the other quarters.
The Templars used cover to move towards me and asault but took enough casualties on their large Crusader unit with Emperor's Champion for my Assault Squad counter attack to take them out. This unit then lost a further fight with their Assault Squad. Meanwhile I shot up his advancing terminators. His two Dreadnoughts and Predator hid the entire game from my Devastators which were in hard cover.
The Blood Angels had a murderous HQ with Death Company, two Assault Squads, three Dreadnoughts, two Predators and 3 Speeders with Typhoons and Assault Cannons and Heavy Bolters. The Speeders got one quarter and did a lot of long range killing. My Lascannon Devastators killed two Predators, a Landspeeder, a Dreadnought and some Deathcompany. They were great. However, my Assault Squad and Command Squad got hammered in Assaults. Poor dice there compensated for some good luck with shooting. They did serve their purpose though in keeping any scoring units away from the quarter I captured.
In both games I used the infiltrate skill to position units in the flanking quarters to divert my opponents energies from my centre and to give me good fields of fire. This worked to an extent but I still haven't quite figured out exactly when to counterattack and how to best use the Deathwatch.
Does anyone have any comments or thoughts?
