Hey guys... I'm looking to redo the way I approach my Space Marine army. I had a lot of success in the Black Crusade, but lately my army's really been getting thwomped. So, I want to throw up what I have, and take some input on how I should set my army up.
What I've got
Commander w/ Jump Pack, Power Fist, Bolt Pistol
6 Terminators (2 w/Assault Cannon, 1 w/Cyclone)
About 35 or so Tactical Marines
3 Plasma Gun Marines
2 Meltagun Marines
2 Missile Launcher Marines
2 Plasma Cannon Marines
10 Scouts w/Sniper Rifles
Land Raider (normal)
So there you have it, that's my army list in a nutshell. Any input on how to tool this up into a more effective army would be awesome
Well id say you need something fast in your list as apart from the Commander w/ Jump Pack you army is very slow if you dont drop some of them onto the battlefield, geyt some landspeeders as they double as anti-tank if you need them to
Make your Tactical Marines up in squads of 6 each, two with a plasma gun and plsama cannon - these will be your heavy infanty killers and the other squads can be made up of one Missile Launcher marine and the last plasma gunner -they can take pot shots at any tanks around
Put the Terminators in the Land Raider and move it up into the center of the enemy and then get the Terminators into close combat as soon as you can, that will give you a hard hiting fast squad that can be anywere you need them or you could deep strike them if you can wait a turn or two, with that amout of firepower anything they land by will be feeling some pain
You dont have a lot of tank killing power, does the Predator have all lascannons as that would help, maybe give the Dreadnaught twin lascannons as that would help
Looks like your army is a "shooty army" so use the Land Raider + Terminators as your mobile unit and your foot squads as fire support
Only use i can think of for the melta guns is to give them to the 5 Veterans and infiltrate them near something dangerous and this will tie up some of your enemys force, put them on a flank with the landraider and you sould get there a lot easier
Hope that helps
Thanks for the input!
I usually use the Dreadnaught as a Venerable Hellfire, so I've got lots of potent anti-tank weaponry coming out of him... The Predator has heavy bolter sponsons, and the turret isn't glued so I can swap the AC/LC out as I need to.
As far as putting Plasma Cannons/Rocket Launchers in a tac squad, isn't that really gonna hurt my mobility? I usually stick to as many plasma guns as possible to keep some mobile potent firepower.
Not if you use some 5 or 6 man units for fire support and use the rest as your moblie force with a plasma gun here or there, maybe save the plasmas and just give your fire support squads a Rocket Launcher or something
And you dont really have anything fast in your force so i see your army doing well as a stand and shoot army, you really need some landspeeders or maybe some bikes as they have a 3+ invulnerable save so they can take a lot of hits off your 5 man teams
Not really. use a small 5 or 6 man squad with a heavy weapon, then for each one of those have a full 8-10 man squad with power fist and a melta to advance under their cover.Originally Posted by Tritoch42

get yourself setup with 2-4, 6 man lascannon teams. Great for any anti mech/tank killing. These guys are lethal to tanks yet are tough to be targeted.
I also suggest you get a 8 man missle devestator team.
Well if you want advice, it would help to know:
A) what point-level you're thinking about, and
what your old list looked like, so we don't recommend the same stuff that's been getting you thumped.
Your old units and tactics may have been sound, but have simply become predictable among your regular opponents. Adding some new units would work, but if you don't have the money, it may come down to how you outfit and use your Tac squads. That shapes the whole character and feel of the force.
I agree with Grotsompa, we'll need more information to make some serious recomendations.
But one thing I can see right off the bat is that you've got Two Assault Cannons and a Cyclone launcher on one squad of Termies, that's illigal. You can only have two of the heavy weapons on one squad. I'd suggest keeping the two Assault Cannons and dropping the Cyclone.
People who don't know how to use artillery are using artillery, and that scares me. -TacJack
Bring out the Bikes!
Two ACs and a Cyclone is illegal? I never realized (nor did anyone else at my local store, lol)... Well there's a lesson learned already!
As for points and army lists.. The majority of the games where I play are 1,500... We make it up to 2,000 once, and I fought a sick 2,600 pont battle once, but yeah... 1500 is the general range. As for my general army list, I was usually using something like this...
- Terminator Librarian (Might of Heroes/Fury of the Ancients w/ Force Weapon, Storm Bolter, Familiar), and a 5-Man Terminator Command Squad
- Dreadnaught with Assault Cannon/CCW
- 7 Man Tac Squad w/2x Plasma Gun
- 5 Man Tac Squad w/2x Melta Gun in a Razorback
- 5 Man Scout Team w/5x Sniper Rifle
-9 Man Assault Squad w/2x Plasma Pistol
- 6 Man Devastator Squad w/2x Missile Launcher Launcher, 2x Plasma Cannon
