Welcome to Librarium Online!
Well met, fellow Warriors of the Imperium.
I am new to these forums, and really to 40K. I have recently traded a few folks for their 40K armies and purchased a few additions to the Space Marines in the past few months, and wanted to get some help on putting together a decent starting list for a NEWB like me. Most of the stuff came as open boxes - unassembled, but I have been busy assembling it all for a couple months now. I have been reading through the Army Lists here, the Battle Reports, both here and in my tall stack of White Dwarfs, so I had a basic idea of what I needed to have a decent assortment as I put this stuff together. I lack Termies, but I am holding out to see what sort of Deathwing Goodness the new rumored Dark Angels update will provide. But, without further delay, here is my haves list for Space Marines (Dark Eldar, Chaos, and Nids will be listed in their associated forums at a later date ) :
Command Squad Box (Apoth, Tech, Standard, Etc)
Chaplain (can add Jet Pack)
Chaplain on Bike
I also have about 10 metal Veterans in DA Robes, including another Standard and 2 plasma pistol-toting serges (Command Squad?)
Dread with Combi-CCW and Storm Bolter
Dread with magnetic switchable armament (Lascanons and Launcher, or CCW and Storm Bolter - depending on need)
Many, many Tac squads. Maybe as much as 100 guys. (I have 4 extra Power Fist arms for Serges)(many models unassambled)
10 Scouts 4 sniper rifles, missle launcher, Heavy Bolter, and shotguns/bolters (unassambled)
5 Man Assault Squad and Assault Serge w/ powerfist
3 Land Speeders with magnetic detatchable Assault Cannons
8 or so Bikes
1 Assault Bike - Bolter configuration
2 Pred Ann.
1 Pred Dest.
Dev Squad Box and extra Plasma Canon Marine (unassembled)
Razorback (switchable tops)
I think that's all...
Anyways, I will be playing an expensive Tau list mostly. He has a lot of stuff too, so they will likely be high point games, and my terrain is being built around a Cities of Death - Cityfighting theme (as is my modelling). I do have the most recent Space Marine, Dark Angels, and Cities of Death Codex, as well as the Maccrage rulebook, and the old 2E book for reference (among others that are not necessarily relevant here).
Thanks in advance!
[edit: Ok, can't change title of post to make it follow the posting guidelines. Sorry.]

First thing's first. YOU ARE A NOOBIE!!! WELCOME!!!
Command squads can't have Techmarines anymore, that's replaced with Company Champions. Techmarines are an IC Elites choice. Welcome to 4th edition.
Against Tau, use those Speeders and deepstrike them. You may want to get another box set of Assault Marines. 2 Plasma pistols and a Powerfist or Power weapon & Meltabombs are a great 10 man assault squad. To beat Tau, use Vets with Meltaguns and Possibly Multi-meltas and Infiltrate them.
Take as many Tac squads as you think you'll need +1 once you've gotten the HQ. Then back them up with a Dread. I like the Lascannon & Heavy flamer Powerfist on the Dread for Tau.
As far as Hq goes, get a Librarian. Hell, get two. You can make them from a few special bits and a Normal Marine (you have many unasssembled). Give every Libby Fury of the Ancients and if you can, give one FotA & Fear of the Darkness. No more Smite, Quickening, or Weaken Resolve.
Hope this helps.
- Infiltrate and deepstrike - Infiltrate = Vets, Sniper rifles AND Bolt pistol config with a Powerfist Sarge (you can make them have one). Deepstrike = LSTs & Assault Marines.
- Bike squad with Biker Librarian (again, mod one).
- Capable command squad.
- Many Tac squads with a Dread backing them up.
- Whirlwinds are god against Tau.
- If you still can, take some powertank (Pred-A or LR), Try not to use the LR unless you've got pts coming out the ass.

Post your army lists in the ARMY LIST section! Not that hard!
Thanks for the reply, E!
Now, is it true that DA can not take Veterans as an Elite choice? I have seen some conflicting reports on this... since I was under the impression this was the case, I was planning on using those models as good-looking filler for a command squad. If they are available to me as an Elite choice, are you saying I can arm them with my scout's sniper rifles and infiltrate them?
I knew the LSTs were essential. I have visions of dropping them on his head quick and tearing apart some of his lines, or putting a few well-placed holes in his armor. I had to buy three canons as bits online to upgrade the ones I had (Two of them came in the 40K Box Set as standard, the other I got from a trade as a standard LS).
Lots of Tac squads backed by a dread is a can-do, and I am currently investigating the Librarian on bike idea. I know folks think bikes are tough for a NooB, but I like what I read on them. I think I may be up to the challenge.
Thanks for the warm welcome. I guess my registration date gives it away that I have been lurking here a little while.
Something definitive on the vets would be great.
Dark Angels cannot take veteran squads, they only get terminator squads. Their HQ choices will have access to command squads listed in their entries (if applicable) in Codex: DA.Originally Posted by Troszkowsky
