Well, just tinkering with some armies here.. I've always been fascinated by the Raven Guard, so here's another go (last go was awhile back... quite some time, I believe) at a Raven Guard list. Keep in mind, this isn't meant to be 100% competitive (though some competitiveness would be nice) but instead it is supposed to be purely fluff based.
Note on the Traits: They are going to be different than the codex traits, because of a conversation I had with Archetype (the Raven Guard guru) a long while back. The disadvantage "Flesh Over Steel" does not make sense in any way for Raven Guard - they deploy their forces in Drop Pods almost exclusively, and for each Drop Pod to take a Fast Attack choice (which is where the Assault Squads are..) never did make sense. So, that was dropped along with No Mercy, No Respite. It's a fluff thing. The new drawback is a simple explanation.. the Raven Guard prefer to work alone, with their surgical striking and infiltration tactics. Seems simple enough to me.
Without further adieu:
Advantage: Blessed Be The Warriors
Disadvantage: We Stand Alone
+Close Combat Weapon
 Veteran Assault Marines
 Veteran Assault Sergeant
Total Points: 497
Total Models: 22
Overall, I kind of like this, though my numbers for the Assault Squad are a little rough.. going to either have to hunt for bits, or just buy two boxes of 'em.
It's very fluffy - representing a forward force of Scouts surveying the area (no need for Snipers in this level of points, more need for anti-Troop weaponry such as the Heavy Bolter) and a trusted Captain leading a Veteran Assault Squad in to back them up - the first on the scene and whatnot.
With this, I'd need, at most - 3x Boxes of Scouts, 2x Boxes of Assault Marines.. not half bad, and if I can dig out bits, I will only need one Assault Marine box.
Keep in mind, this is mainly fluff and is only for 500 point games - a little light in the anti-MEQ and while I understand that the Assault Squad is a big points sink, I think it's fluffy and if I can get them into close combat they will more than make up for the fact.
Note: The Captain has a Power Weapon and a second CCW for fluff purposes. I don't want to give him a pistol, so please don't recommend it.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions/comments.
well I would say this list is pretty hard kore. Are you actually going to make it or are you just thinking outloud? If you are going to build it where are you getting the models(hobby shop, GW mail order, independent site)? if you just want one more assault marine why not try BW bits?

Just thinking out loud currently, but it's very heavily in consideration, and if I were to go the Raven Guard way, this is where I'd start. Fluffy and hopefully at least a bit effective. :yes:Originally Posted by Connor Ivering
As for the models, I'll probably be doing some searching around online, or hit up the local hobby shop. Problem with trying to order bits is that I want the new(er) plastic models.. not sure if they come separate, but if they do that'd be a great help.
