can drop pods scatter off of the table or do they stop at the edge ?

Devastator squads can shoot after landing in the pods..correct ?

It depends on the type of weapon. The models count as having moved, so if they are equipped with Heavy Weapons, then nope.

yea i read that paragraph. Does the table edge count as impassable terrain ? or is it like deep striking where the model can land off the table edge killing itself ?

so poding devastator squads would be ineffective then. Other options instead ?

devestators can drop pod but not fire heavy weapons the turn they disembark. honesty, devs would be more effective if you deepstrike them because then they could fire the turn they deploy. its really unclear if the side of the table is impassible terrain. until we know for sure, just hope enemy units are in the way, they'll stop the drop pod. im curious is to why you're not using specialists in the command squad, such as the company champion. im also curious is to why you don't give them furious charge. this will make them better at assaulting and that's what im sure they're probably gonna do (2 assault weapon, vet serg w/ power fist, every1 with ccw and bolt pistol) i think 6 melta guns are excessive, but whatever works for you. gl man

points was the reason why i didnt consider furious charge and a champion. Yea infiltrate is the best option for the dev squad. However i would prefer to keep with the DP theme especially if its an Alpha mission. Are my only options to field squads on the table or are there other ways to add another drop podded squad that can support my other squads ?

Just take some DP dread's w/ tllc/ml and pod 'em in not so close to the enemy. Or take a termie sqaud w/ 4 pfists,2AC and pod em right behind tanks.

    I'm back.

I concur with Swat72 that you probably don't want to Drop Pod a Dev Squad, since the Missile Launchers don't get to fire the turn they land and deploy. However, that being said, the six regular marines that you had in your Dev Squad still get to fire (and probably rapid fire if enemy is within 12"), so you could count on getting 12 shots off with them the turn you land, and then the Heavy Weapons guys would get to fire the next turn, and if they stay still, for the rest of the game.

Although this would work, I think you'd be better served with Drop Podding Dreadnoughts, or Termies, or even just more dual meltagun Tactical Squads. When you drop in that close to your enemy, with meltaguns and power fists, you really don't need a whole lot of long range anti-tank firepower.

To answer your second question, yes Drop Pods can deviate off of the board, therefore losing the unit. So, to prevent this, always place your landing point at least 12" away from any table edges to prevent such a critical deviation.

Another important thing to remember with drop pods is that they are vehicles. Use them to block LOS it really helps. Short range firepower should be your mainstay. You really don't need the devestators overall. Melta guns are your friend, as well as assault cannons.

i was thinking about fielding 2 more dreads for this army. With the 305 pts saved i could add 2 more dreads for the same amount of points. I would have to make the termie squad a command squad and make the existing command squad a reg tac squad. Would it be best to keep that squad with bp and ccw or make them bolters w/meltas ?

If you give your Librarian Terminator armor and a four person Term command squad, they'll fit in a drop pod, and would allow you the option of adding two more Dreadnoughts (for a total of 3). This should leave you enough points for another Tactical Squad, that I'd make just like the others.

Once all is said and done, you'll see that your Drop Pod army looks a whole lot like the armies described in WD316 (May 2006). Look in the article on page 84 of that issue for some good advice. If you use traits, Trust Your Battle Brothers, giving you True Grit, will make your standard Tactical Marines (of which you'll have about 40) twice as effective in close combat.

    Best,

    Valerian
