Welcome to Librarium Online!
I think that the new Venerable Dreadnought is the coolest model in the Space Marine Gallery. The question is, are Ven. Dread's actually effective in-game. I have one in my new list outfitted with extra armor and smoke launchers with a drop pod. Is this effective with the standard weaponry they carry? Thanks.
This question has been asked a million times on this site and the answer is a most definite YES!! I can't remember how many times my dread has been saved by the venerable re-roll. I wish all my vehicles could have it becuase its so darn awesome. Peace dude,

Ok, let's step it up. Has anyone tried the Heed the Wisdom of the Ancients Trait and taken 6 Venrable Dreadnoghts, perhaps with drop pods? I have a feeling that if you loaded up on troops to bottom out the list a bit, it might work. An example:
Venerable Dreadnought with Extra Armor and Drop Pod x 6= 960
7 Scouts with 6 Bolters and 1 Missile launcher x6= 606
Chaplain with Jump Pack, Thunder Hammer, Stormbolter, Rosarius, Bionics, Purity Seals- 165
9 Assault Marines with Frag Grenades and Jump Packs
1 Sergeant with Frag Grenades, Jump Pack, Powerfist, Stormbolter- 265
Traits: Heed the Wisdom of the Ancients
Drawback: We Stand Alone
What's the verdict?
It'll work, but that list doesn't look very fun. I mean six/seven deepstriking units and six infiltrators; its more a precision army that can be defeated fairly easily if your opponents knows what he/she is doing. Personally it looks like a pretty boring list, only making use of cost effective units and thats it.
As to what you originally posted, I don't really like the new venerable dreadnought. It seems way to over the top for something like that. (It exemplifies the fact that the ven is revered heavily but come on, its way over the top.) Give me a plastic or resin one over a pewter one any day; there are enough bitz out there to make it look venerable in the way you want it to...
(Against anti-MEQ and anti armour, the latter of the two what some here always suggest using, none of those dreads will last long even with the venerable rule.)

That would be a cool list to see play. But you wouldnt have much on the field for the first turn and you might not get all ur dreads in at the same time. So it depends but that would be a cool list.
Erik Moraki's Great Company 16/4/7
Borgut "SBD" GreatStrider's Ogres 6/1/2
An'Gorath's World Eaters 3/0/2
Sigurd GreatFang's Wulfen Host 7/4/3
I love using the venerable rule to have the dread blow up in CC
Aldso, there was a local guy who took first place in a tourney with 6 dreads
Hell yeah the venerable dread is worth it. I think it is alot more effective when you can take it as a tank hunter with the TLLC/MC combo but GW doesn't make one with those weapons yet so it is either FW or use a bunch of bits.
The sun never sets on a badass.
I think the Venerable is definetly worth it...but why spend points on a smoke laucher? If you are drop podding, you should never be out of fire range, and should be in CC the first turn you can move (maybe the 2nd) Remember, you can fire the turn you land, but cannot fire if you blow your smoke. I play drop podded Dreads all the time (and have played 6 which I enjoyed a lot) and have never used a smoke launcher.
Ah, great. Another one.
The model may look like a king size chocolate yum yum bar, but beware, it's got coconut.
Meaning that while it's nice to look at, the truth under the outer layer is much less pleasant. It's metal, you only get the Assault Cannon & Powerfist Storm Bolter, and there are little tabs to file off right where the very fine detail is.
The unit entry is well worth it, but the model is not. For the $85 this hunk of crap costs
you can get a Venerable Dreadnaught of your own design by buying a normal one for $65
and taking a few spare bits from battleagon bits or something. The difference is that it'll be yours and yours alone, and you'll be able to choose other than the basic profile.

Post your army lists in the ARMY LIST section! Not that hard!
Cmac2786, you seem like a smart fellow, the way you type certainly shows so. However, in the future would you be able to post your army list in the army list forum, and then ask specifically about the dread? Thanks mate.
Moved to army list forums.
This doesn't mean that you can start threads about the effectivness of units in that forum, moving this there as we've already got an army list going is effective.
