It's well known that IG just can't do Close combat. But yea I admire the fact that your trying to go for the army that appeals to you.

Maybe youcould go all infantry? A big huge Infantry army drop trooping in amidst the enemy. Or get independant commisars and have three fat units of conscripts to line up and charge. Undeniably fun.

IMO go for close combat if you like but concider this.

I know most guard players would be reduced to tears seeing this but who cares?
Maybe give these doctrines a spin

    Warrior weapons
    Hardened fighters
    Rough riders
    Colse order drill
    Iron dicipline/ vetrans?

Have a wee think on it. Your basic guy has 2 attacks at ws4 with +1 in and +1 ld. Altogether that would give you twenty attacks at in4 at ws4. I cna't really think how to make guard close combat monsters. But if your going close combat get lots of rough riders. Maybe Ogryns? lol

    blasphemy!!!!!!!!!!

    sir,

i mean this with all due respect to your close combat efforts. how can i say this politely?
your troops will die quickly with hornor.
the only way i see you being a tad lucky is with all troops no vechiles at all.
drop the die hards- and just go meetgrinder theroy on this one.
drop everything except hardened fighters, your wanting close combat- wich i stay away from like the plague.
(Can harden fighters be mixed with drop troop doc?)
if so go that way- no heavy wep just lots of plasma guns and prey the dice gods shine on your insainty.
overwheming troops is the only way i ahve seen thes work:

    2 pltn as you have mentioned but with only two units each;
    - now go the (2)ind commisar one with w/HI with two units of conscripts-
you now have over 150 models with two attacks- be they crappy needeing like 6 to hit and 5/6 to wound eldar, there just meat for the commisars-

you only have 60- 70 or so troops,
in the guard i brounght to a mini turni(750pts) i had 137 troops, 2 wins 1 loss,no conscripts or commisars-
    all vinillia lascannon meat sheilds.

    my 2 cents
    good luck you crazy animal,

Everthings that needed to be said, was said. My only cooment, is if you want a CC based army, then you might want to check out the blood pact. Its not really IG, but it counts as IG veterans being converted to the "Dark" side and haveing exeptional training, using old standard uquipment and yada yada yada. Well you get the point, blood pact is more of a army that has guns, but if the enemy gets close you men wont have any trouble in repelling them in CC

I was actually thinking that in Cities of Death terrain a mob of CC Guard might not be so terrible. Yes, they will lose a lot of men, but in a would or 4+ cover saves all over the place, it might be doable since shooting is less useful.

I was considering Bassies in the backfield and
Cameoline, ID, Hardened, Warrior Weapons with Independant Commisars providing Powerfists...

    Just thoughts...

Oh, and where are the Blood Pact army rules?

That too but dont forget carapace, its expensive but at times worth its points. but then again, it TOTALY depends on your army list, oppoent army, terrain and fluff about what doctrines and upgrades you decide to take.
