I think you need to use different traits. You're taking too long to get to the enemy if you're not infiltrating.

Try Be swift as the Wind instead of Trust your Battle-brothers perhaps.
Come up with a list that gets there fast (or at least all together) and it'll do well.
Also, Whirlwinds need to be twins.

Okay... You have any ideas as to how that'll be feasible? Any better suggestions than "Give them bikes"?

And Whirlwinds are in short supply here...
I wanted to remove one for purposes of having a 2nd Dread.

i used to do something similar with my tacticals squads(infiltrate + melta + tybb) however, after a while i found that this wasn't as effective as i wish it could have been. i started experimenting with no longer giving them infiltrate, but instead giving them long ranged weapons. i found this to be a lot more effected. however, if you prefer to be more up close and personal, thats fine, but i'm just saying give it a try, you might find it to your fancy.

So, you suggest longer-ranged weapons? One of them's going into the LRC & the other sticks by the Whirlwind.

And I don't infiltrate them, they're more of an anti-enemy infiltrating group.

Are the Tac squads armed with bolters and chainsword or bolt pistols? TYBB won't work with bolt pistols. If you are equiping them with bolters and swords, what rule did you use?

It's because of that passage that I choose to give them a Chainsword with the Bolters... to represent that. You know? A bit of creative license...

    I want to see-

    A) more compedative lists.

    Or

    more fluffy lists.

    No more inbetween lists.

Um, so what do you suggest to actually MAKE it one of these?
I don't get how to make it perfectly A or B... I made my fluff to suit my gaming style, then evolved to suit the fluff. It's how I mutated, so I need a tazer to prod me in one of the desired directions.

    That can be arranged.

First, pick a theme, that is how does the army fight - up close and personal, shooty, or hit and run (speed), an entire chapter may fight in many ways, however a commander will likely never want all of these ways at once. Now, at the size of these forces, basically very small armies - compared to a real army, which might be thousands of men, likely with space marines one will never have over 100.

So 1-2 of themes above should be specialed on.

For example, a hit and run, shooty force, might take a back bone of razorbacks, and shooty tactical squads.

Suplementing that with moveable preditors, and landspeeders, some dreadnoughts, possibly terminators, possibly also drop pods.

This would be like flanking shooty force.

An upclose and personal list, thats also shooty, might be drop pods.

A pure shooty force would be overal slow - focusing on powerful shooty squads like devistators.

So this is theme - but not yet fluff.

Fluff is best reprosented with background story, and painting, but that isnt really enough to qualify the list as fluffy, because a well painted list can be made to power gaming standards.

The only other measures of fluff you can make are to make uninformaty through a list.

Example, if one took a mobile shooty force, like the one above, relying on razorbacks, then perhabs all squads would be organized into 6 man squads, each with a veteran sgt, who is kitted out for some special role in the army.

To further empasize this mobile shooty force, one might take cleanse and purify.

And make a few squads like this:

    Veteran Sgt, combi plasma.
5x marines, 2 with plasma guns.
    Razorback, heavy bolter, extra, smoke.

So, this squad is fairly mobile - and the squad id dedicated to laying down a barage of firepower.

Veteran Sgt, Powerfist, combi melta, bionics.
5x marines, 2 with melta guns.
    Razorback, TL lascannon, extra, smoke.

So this squad is also mobile, but more dedicated to tank hunting.

    Veteran sgt, auspex, storm bolter.
    5x marines, 1 plasma gun, 1 lascannon.
    Razorback, TL lascannon, extra, smoke.

Ok so this might be a fire support squad, still mobile if it needs to be, but not required to move.

A bit more mobile firesupport might be:

Veteran sgt, bolter, pufity seals, auspex.
5x marines, 1 plasma gun, 1 heavy bolter.
    Razorback, heavy bolter, extra, smoke.

So now, this is a pretty fleshed out troops sections. To back them up, 2 preditors, with TL lascannon, heavy bolters, extra, maybe smoke to keep theme.

Maybe a dreadnought, with AC + storm bolter.

Finally an HQ squad, with wargear depending on point limit the equipment they'd have.

in a razorback - so theme is they are mobile, and shooty, reprosented through use of razorbacks.
