Welcome to Librarium Online!
After hundreds of idea lists, and a dozen or so test lists and many, many practice games this is what I came up with for my Mech Guards concept that I have been working on for a couple of years.
The fluff is that the Army with the exception of the HQ is mobile and mechanized. Sort of rapid reaction guard force that is primarily vehicles, but with Elite troops supporting the Tanks.
I have more Sentinals than I originally wanted, but found I needed the Heavy firepower of Lascannons (you never can have enough Lascannons).
Doctrines: Grenadiers, Light Infantry (only for HQ)
Command Squad + Mortar + Light Infantry = 60pts.
Lascannon Sentinals x 3 = 165pts
3 x Grenadier Squads of 10 troops. = 662pts
all with Vet Sgt with Power Weapon, two Plasma Guns, Chimera, Smoke.
Lascannon Sentinals X 3 = 165pts
2 x Hellhounds + EA + Smoke = 246pts
Heavy Support: Basilisk w Indirect fire = 125pts
2 x Leman Russ, HHB, Sponson HB, EA and Smoke (one with Searchlight) = 327pts
Total list: 1750pts, 35 troops, 11 Vehicles.

I'm thinking of doing a kinda of roughed up and scrappy looking mech guard army my list is similar to this one but 1500pts: http://www.librarium-online.com/forums/imperial-guard-army-lists/95184-tank-heavy-army-1500pts.html
Being that this is my first guard army and you seem judging by the amount of posts in the guard area to be a pretty experienced guard player could you tell me what this kinda of list is like to play against the average player?
This is a gutsy list. By that I mean its quite easy for you to lose a few special units and go down in flames, but since you've had alot of practise and know how to use it this should be extremely effective.
My only suggestion would be to look into a Leman Russ Demolisher to replace one of the Battle Tanks. I use this in my variant and I find that sometimes that extra punch really comes in handy.
Why not drop both Lascannon Sentinal squads and get 3 squads of veterans with a lascannon and as many plasma guns as you feel like. Set them up near the enemy and im sure they will pick off something and force your opponent to deal with them first giving your men the time they need to move up and dish out some plasma pain. Two big squads of Sentinals are too big of a easy target. Why not stick a missile launcher in your command squad as its not if their doing anything else in your list.
"Hey sarge, this lasgun is heavy. I wish we had something lighter."
