I'm trying for a elite, specialist army. No mass numbers, no mass tanks, just small groups of powerful units. Ish.
Doctrines: Heavy Weapons Platoons, Grenadiers, Light Infantry, Veterans.
HQ: Senior Officer /w 25 points of wargear (undecided on what it should be). 2 attached Mortor squads.
Elites: 3 groups of Hardened Veterans, and each has:
9 Veterans + 1 Veteran Sergeant. 3 plasma guns and the rest have lasguns.
Question: Is there a way for the Vets to have medi-packs?
Troops: 3 groups of Storm Troopers (Grenadiers), and each has:
9 ST'ers + 1 ST Sarge. 2 melta guns.
Mortor Platoon, with a Junior Office and 3 Mortor teams.
Total: 1425 pts.
The remaining points would be used for Doctrines (like Vets and Mortors would get light infantry).
Would this work as an "Elite" Army? Would this work at all? Lol. Also, it is mostly balenced to take on any army?

1: Either make your commander a Heroic senior officer or a junior officer with an Honorifica, and change the mortar support teams to Heavy bolter support teams, lots more effective
2: no your VETS cannot take medics (you can model one if you want, but he makes no difference
3: not many troops, there short range anti-tank weapons will make them vulnerable to ordnance (after all I have 7 lol)
3: WTFrell no Leman russ MBT`s, those Basilisks WILL be vulnerable, they have light armour and no Indirect fire, They WILL die very quickly
4: again get rid of the Mortars for something else, a couple of Missile Launcher teams at least
5: where are the Vox-casters?, your army has no leadership, it will crumble
all in all this list looks rushed and NEEDS to be redone completely, it will die, its too vulnerable, it need more men and needs better armour support, and anti-tank guns, it would lose many matches I think
Well, the idea I had in mind was to Infiltrate the Mortor squads and Vets. The Mortors would have 5 barrages each turn (each w/ 3 blasts). They could also pin. The Vets would rain plasma death down on anyone trying to get at the mortors. The Basilisks would be a distraction (as well as some hefty firepower). And the Storm Troopers would plug any gaps with the hellguns and meltas.
But... I am inexperianced. I was trying for a de-centralized army, like, I would try to spread the squads all around evenly. They would be in range of each other, but not close together. My opponent would have to either spread out to get them or bunch up and let me pound them.
Generally, I would be playing on the standered 4'x6' table, and indirect fire for the Bas seemed kinda... silly?
And I assumed my mortors would be able to hit anything.
Also, for anti tank support, I have 9 plasma guns, 6 meltas, 30 Stormtroopers with krak grenades, and 2 Basilisks.
Or am I imagining something that just won't work? :/

If you want an army with no tanks and a small number of powerfull units then honestly the imperial guard isnt the army for you. You would probably find the space marines or one of the many meqs more interesting and easier to fit with what you have in mind.
Do you not have to unlock storm troopers from the list of restricted troops with one of your doctrines before you can get greneadiers? I'm pretty sure you do but im not 100% sure.
You dont really need to unlock heavy weapons platoons, just make the heavy support mortarts a second hq choice with 2 squads of them and give a mortar to each of the two command squads. While this way has one fewer mortar it costs 60 points less and frees up a doctrine. Seems worth it to me.
Make the officer a junior officer with the honorifica imperialis and add a vox network. This upgrade will cost you a total of 65 points, but will make your whole army ld9 instead of 8.
Basilisks without indirect fire are a waste of points. They have a lot of firepower, which makes them a big target, but they cant take hits. The whole point of a basilisk is to hide it out of site and rain down indirect fire. Just put one in each corner and have them cover eachothers blind areas.
The storm troopers wont do anything the way you have them. Melta guns are really deadly, but they have short range and storm troopers only move 6" per turn. Any good targets will stay away from them and you opponent will make a point of killing, which wont be tough. So, give the storm troopers plasma(they can take the backfire a bit better anyways) and give 2 of your 3 veteran squads meltaguns so they can infiltrate into a good position.
