Ok, I am now getting more and more finished with my army, finished enough to take it to a proper gaming night at the club. I guess I'll be facing either Tau, marines or Eldar. Maybe Daemon Hunters. I've made a 2000 points list, but I'd like some advice from you more seasoned IG-generals before I commit to the last few conversions and the final painting.
I'd like to have an army that is fun above all else, winning is fun of course but not above all else.
3 Missile launchers, 95p
3 Auto cannons, 95p
Sentinel, MultiLaser, Extra armour 50p
Chimera Extra armour, smoke, MultiLaser, HeavyBolter 233p
Infiltrate/Deepstrike (not sure yet) 97p
Chimera Multi Laser, Heavy Bolter, Extra armour, smoke 179p
3x10 Heavy Bolter, Grenade Launcher 78p each= 222p
1x 10 Missile Launcher, Plasma 85p
Melta, Missile Launcher
Chimera MultiLaser, Heavy Bolter, Extra Armour, Smoke 178p
Hellhound, Extra armour, Heavy Bolter 120p
Sentinel Auto Cannon, Extra armour 55p
Salamander, Extra armour, Smoke 108
Demolisher, 3 Heavy Bolters, Extra armour, smoke 173p
Basilisk Armoured Crew Compartment, Indirect Fire 145
Earthshaker platform 75p
In IA 1 it says the Earthshaker can be modified to fire indirect but there is no cost attached, so I have not payed anything for it, should I?
I know I might be a bit low on troops, but those metalminis are expensive. I do however have a few left over, so I could make another small squad like a remnant squad or veterans. (the vet option would however force me to start using doctrines and then everything seems to become far more expensive...)
So, is this a playable list, is there something vital I've forgotten or something (beside the aroured Bassie) that seems very unuseful and should be dropped?
Please, hit me like a ton of bricks
HQ: I like the mortar. Keep the squad hidden and providing a leadership bubble. Get a company standard for this unit. The re-roll really helps. If you have any spare doctrines get Iron discipline as well as it is too cheap to ignore.
Upgrade the 3 ML to 3 LC. Sharp shooters is expensive and not usually worth it but on 3 las cannon I would pay for the upgrade.
3 AC are ok for anti skimmers. Again sharpshooters would be nice.
Drop ex armour on the sentinel. Have you noticed it is cheaper to give a sentinel a laser cannon than to give one to an infantry squad. I would do so.
Veterans: Nice. Give the sergent a power weapon if you can (or is it an officer only item?) Drop the chimera and they get infiltrate for free. Using the las cannon from an armoured vehicle is difficult. Chameleoline would be perfect for this unit. Infiltrate them into rubble and have a 3+ cover save with all that fire power!
Storm troopers: Give these guys the chimera from the veterans as they don't get infiltrate for free. I would take meltas for for mechanised stormtroops. If you do this they become more of a suicide squad so you could save some points by dropping them to 5. Another nice version is to have heavy flamer (or two) in the chimera and some flamers in the strom troops with another 6-8 hellguns.
You can swap the medic for an extra plasmagun. This is a one shot squad as the enemy would be mad to not kill it on site so the medic is a bit redundant.
Squads look fine but as the Lt is diving around I would get some veteran sergents with bolters in the squads for leadership benefits . I would choose more squads with ML & Plas if the points were available.
Looks ok and can be used with the vets and grenadiers. Get a Veteran Sergent.
Hell Hound: Get a pintel heavy stubber.
Sentinel: Considder a las cannon and drop ex armour.
Salamander: You know all those upgrades I have suggested above and not told you where to find the points for them? Drop this tank or swap it for a sentinel. I have never liked salamanders as they are expensive and the fast vehicle status isn't really that useful with a guard army that sits back and shoots.
Enclosed basalisk: Fantastic forgeworld model but the 20 points for enclosed isn't really worth it. Model the vehicle with all the hatches open and just pay 125 for a normal indierct fire version.
Weapon platform: I think I would pay 25 points for indirect fire. The griffin get's indirect fire included in the cost and it specifically states so in IA vol 1 but I wouldn't assume it is so with weapon platforms. I'll check the rules for the DKok towed basalisk to see what they say but I'll have to wait a few weeks for it to be released.
Apologies, I don't have much time, but here's a few observations.
Firstly, I like the fluffiness. It's nice to see players getting into that aspect of the game. Also it might be an idea to edit your post adding the Doctrines for Steel Legion-ish, if you are using your guys as them-ish (i.e. mainly Mechanised)
Why an HSO with a Mortar. Wouldn't a JO with a ML/AC/LC be more useful? Alternatively, give the HQ the Vets Chimera, and arm them with Plasmas or GLs, and give the HSO a Power Weapon. Allowing the Vets to Infiltrate is certainly very useful.
I agree that the Sentinel could be given a Lascannon, though as it is, it provides useful support for your advancing troops. I must admit that as the model looks so much like a Lascannon anyway, MultiLaser Sentinels can be fielded as either, as long as your opponent knows. I use 9 LC and 3 Dropping ML Sentinels, or 6 of each - all from the same model.
I don't know about all your Fast and Heavy, not having said necessary books, but I like your choices for the vehicles I do know. I much prefer the Demolisher to the standar Russ.
