Hey everyone, as you will soon see I am new to Warhammer 40K (make that Warhammer period). Some friends and I are starting to play and we have a mix of brand new players as well as a couple veterans. We are looking to assemble a 750 point army first, I just want to make sure I am putting together something competitive. Using some info from my friends, a program that helped me pick items, as well as the Codex: Dark Angels I was put together the following (actually 745 total points):
HQ: Company Master (130 points)
Troops: Tactical Squad (165 points)
9 Space Marines + 1 Sergeant
Frag Grenades (x10)
Krak Grenades (x10)
Bolt Pistol (x10)
Bolt Gun (x10)
Troops: Tactical Squad (90 points)
4 Space Marines +1 Sergeant
Frag Grenades (x5)
Krak Grenades (x5)
Bolt Pistol (x5)
Bolt Gun (x5)
Fast Attack: Ravenwing Attack Squadron (135 points)
2 Bike Squad
Frag Grenades (x2)
Krak Grenades (x2)
Twin Linked Bolters (x2)
Same as above minus meltagun and flamer.
Elite: Deathwing Terminator Squad (225 points)
Power Fist (x1)
Storm Bolter (x1)
Chain Fist (x1)
Lightning Claws (pair) (x2)
I chose the Dark Angels because I really like the feel of the chapter. I then looked at the units they have to try and put together a strategy with them. I chose the Ravenwing units (well actually they were a gift ) and figured that with the teleport homer I should pair them up with a Deathwing Terminator Squad. I'm hoping that their quick movement would allow me to get them in close to bring the Deathwings in as a melee wrecking crew. That is also why the Ravenwing have some close combat weaponry. I figure once they get there they are going to need it. The rest of the units are set up to provide covering fire, etc. I was also probably influenced by one of the other new guys building a mostly melee army with one big hitter that will provide covering fire.
I have never played a game, so the combat rules are abstract to me at the moment, but I like the idea of a fast moving quick hitting army. Is this where I am headed with this or am I headed for complete ruin.
Writing it down I actually feel like I just threw everything together - and let's be honest I actually did! Thanks for any pointers.
Well, I'm not as familiar with the DA army list since the new rules were released, but I'll give it a quick once-over.
I like the idea of getting a Ravenwing and Deathwing element into the army, even if it's a small one, because you get a good EL and a good FA choice that are both characterful for the army. You're rather limited at 750 pts because of the expensiveness of these units, but they do form a core to build around.
If at all possible I'd recommend putting your master (or whatever HQ) with the Deathwing because he's going to want a bodyguard, and is usually best utilized in the thick of the fighting because of his superior weaponry and stats. Upgrade his armor to Terminator armor and he can Deepstrike with them.
The only other thing I see with this list is that you have no heavy weapons, and hence almost no anti-tank capability except for a couple of thunder hammers, which you will find can be exceedingly difficult to bring to bear against mobile vehicles. Adding some missile launchers or lascannons to your tactical squads would go a long way towards shoring-up that deficiency. Then again, if none of your friends are buying tanks, it may not be a concern.
Keep in mind that the range of bolters is only 24" if they stand still, and effectively only 18" if they're moving. Depending on the size of your gameboard, you can very easily be out-ranged by your opponent.
Thanks for the feedback!
Hmm - Since I have only been looking at one other guys army I'll have to go back over the Codex and see what heavy weapons I can bring to bear (he is also using space marines and almost all his guys are melee focused except for his dreadnought). I like the idea of upgrading the HQ unit to Terminator armor and adding him to the deep strike option. Silly question here, but are there any special rules for attaching the HQ to an elite unit? I'll go try and dig it up myself, but I figured I would ask.
If I add Belial, Master of the Deathwing, as my HQ unit then my Terminator squad is treated as both a Troops unit as well as an Elite unit. This appears to give me some additional flexibility in building the rest of the units. I'll look through some more and see if I can put something together.
I appreciate the help.
