Son's of San Leo 1,000pt Starter Force

Hey guys, I've been a long time fan of Imperial Guard but have always shied away at the cost of starting up an army. With the release of the new Grey Knights book I was dusting off my old GK models and writting up lists when I realized I was more excieted about the Inquisitor and his retinues than I was about the GK. I also realized how much I wanted a shooting force backed up with heavy tanks and artillery rather than another power armour close combat army (I already play Blood Angels). These thoughts lead me back to my long time love affair with the IG and my impression that the Guard has remained remarkably competitive even in the face of the most recent codexes. So with that I decided I would sell of my old grey knights and go with 'The Emperor's Many', rather than 'The Emperor's Chosen'.

With that I've created a basic starter list which includes many of the elements that I feel make the Guard a unique army to play. This list should also be fairly cost effective (relative to the Guard) to start.

x2 Cadian Battleforce boxes: $190.00 (Gives me x2 command squads, x40 soldiers, x24 heavy weapon options, x2 sentinels)
x2 Leman Russ boxes: $100.00
x1 Basilisk box: $50.00 (I have plans on how to convert this to a Griffon)
x2 Chimera boxes: $70.00 (I already have one from my old Daemon Hunter Inquisitor)

Total: $410.00 dollars + tax. Ouch. I should get about $140.00ish for my Grey Knights so that should soften the blow.

It looks like a solid starter force. Something you might want to consider to reduce costs is to look to some of the online retailers. Many of them will offer 20% off of retail price and free shipping once a minimum price threshold has been met. The Warstore comes to minds, but I ma sure that there are others.

Yeah, that starter force is fine. I feel your pain about the cost, paying £15.50 (not sure what that is in dollars) is just a bit expensive for a 50 point squad. I got most of mine though when they were still £18 for 20, back when they also did cool cover art.

Thinkwargames are also a decent store.

You are a bit off points-wise... this army comes to about 1120 points...

1010 plus the CCS is still a decent starter force. Paring it down to 1k would not be difficult.

Dang. I completely duffed on adding my points right. I should have known when I felt that I had everything I would want in a 1,000pt list that I would be over. The issue is where to shave points. Dropping the Griffon, Master of Ordnance and the cammo cloaks would be easy but that would cut out 2 of my pie plates and I really like the Griffon and I really want the CCS to give orders to my infantry. I'd almost consider dropping a Russ but that would leave all the heavy AT shooting at my one remaining tank. Is one Russ at 1,000pts going to leave me gimped?

Gah. What do you guys feel I should trim?
