I like the idea of the team but one sniper isnt going to kill anything even if he gets a reroll to wound, i can see them being very useful as Spotters but i wonder if geting a reroll on a weapon that can kill a squad of marines a turn is a bit overpowered (would annoy 80% of players) Aslo i would make them the same stats as they would both be well trained (just to make it easier to remember) Quote:
I like this idea for the sniper team and would have some in my army if i could take them:yes: | ||

Well you could go the route of a Special Forces style laser designator team. Each turn a hunter killer arrived if they "paint" a target. If they move they can't paint a target. But at least that way you have a nice strong crack missile coming in from the orbiting aircraft 2-3 kilometers from the skirmish like an apache or f-16 type IG atmospheric aircraft. Just an idea that is trying to get the same effect.

Now, on the subject of snipers: I liked Roland's idea way back when, when he first came up with it. The rules are pretty well done and balanced, just not sure its good enough that I'd put them in my list. The sniper rifle just isn't very effective, even if given a re-roll to wound. I'd consider maybe enlarging the squad to say 6 men and shifting the focus more to that spotting/fire support role. (You can keep the 'rifles if you like). A fair idea might be to steal some rules from the Imperial Guard High Command Group published in White Dwarf. As I recall one of the orderlies gave benefits like being able to re-roll any scatter. It'd have to be balanced not to make Russes drastically more deadly, but getting re-rolls could actually make mortars a bit more practical.

Yeah I Like that KOS-MOS....if he uses the vox to call in Arty the sniper can't fire. Sokhar: As of right now the Spotter just allows a re-roll of the scatter dice, ala Imperial High Command. I agree that a re-roll on the sniper shot won't make much difference, but it does at least give you a chance of taking one wound of that Godzilla 'Fex. But yeah the teams would see more use as calling in Arty and I like the 2 man size, only because it seems more realistic. Having a squad of 6 men running around almost makes them seem no longer covert. The thing with the snipers is that they would make awesome models to convert and ue and would make a fun fluffy unit to have. As for my current drop-troop list, I wouldn'y use them b/c I don't have any weapons that are ordnance and/or guess so their re-rolls wouldn't be needed. I can see them being VERY useful in a standard Sit-N-Shoot guard list which brings 2-3 tanks or a Mech list or an Armored CO list where those 3 teams of snipers would come in MUCH use re-rolling 3 different scatters. The only thing I havent figured out is should I have the sniper teams declare who they are spotting for first and then go from their, or should I have the vehicles/weapons go first and then declare after which ones are getting "spotted"? Though a cool second idea following off the sniper one, which i think was orignally proposed by either Boxxant or Bulldogprez, was have a 6-8 man team of vets w/ standard vet rules and stats, and instead give their vox caster for say +10points the added ability to allow a re-rolled scatter (following the same rules as I mentioned above). Make this unit a new elite choice and voila' you know have a new option for Elites. Anyways more input advice welcomed. And keep up the ideas for new things. It's always fun to see what people come up with. |
