Welcome to LO and the Imperial Guard. Navigating the IG codex can be pretty tricky at time, but its a cinch once it makes sense.
Voxes, not a fan myself but here is how they work.
A line squad with a Vox may use the Leadership of the General (General refers to the Command Platoon) once per turn.
If the General has a Master Vox he may give his leadership to any number of squads per turn. If he only carries a standard Vox he may only give his Ld down the vox once a turn. Iron Discipline doesn't transfer down the Vox and I don't think the Commisar bonus does either.
Another note on the Master Vox is it costs a bit more than it may seem. The entry says 'a voxcaster for X points, it may be further upgraded for Y points'. The Master Vox costs X+Y points, only a bit but all adds up in a guard army.
Ufortunately not possible. The COD entry states 'the Leadership bonus only applies if the unit's own Leadership is used'. When Voxing the unit uses the Officer's Ld and so COD isn't useable. If you combine Close Order and a Vox network, it is possible for all of your squads to have Ld 10
Thats Voxes covered, though personally I prefer to use bubbles.
Platoon can be tricky since there are references etc.
Basically its as follows (Fictional Points):
Officer Leader with Retinue from HQ section: 100 points
Squad 1 + Death Ray + Vox: 200 points
Squad 2 + Sheep Launcher + Vox: 200 points
Platoon: 500 points
In 500 points it can be difficult to get what you want. In 500 point battles I think its best not to try to stick to a standard IG list, 2 Platoons. This restricts your list and you can't cram in enough firepower this way.
Instead it can be better to drop conventional list style for the ability to get fun stuff in. A single platoon with a Heavy and Special in 2 squads is about 250 points. Now instead of another and busting your limit, take advantage of Grenadiers. A squad of Stormies can come in about 70/80 points if you keep it fairly minimum. Then there is room for some playing with Sentinels, tanks (Hellhounds rock at this point level), Veterans, Rough Riders and the other stuff.
You still have your main block of 30 troops, some elite troops and then flavour stuff.
Some tricks while list building:
1) Junior Officer + Honorifica = Less than a Heroic Senior Officer. Same stats a few less points, when you don't need the Honorifica elsewhere (eg: 500 point battles) its nifty.
2) Iron Discipline. Only a few points, makes all units near the Officer behave like Marines. Godly Doctrine.
3) Commisar LD DOES apply when using the 12" Leadership rule. (If you were thinking of using them). The main way to get Ld 10 around the place (re-rollable with a standard to boot!).
If you have any more questions ask away. The LO community is an amazing resource for every warhammer, hope you enjoy your stay.
Happy Hunting!

Yeah the Imp. Guard codex is confusing that way. I once thought I had to purchase a Heavy Weapons Platoon for every Demolisher I field
Just a question though... is Iron Discipline conveyed through the Vox network?
Aw nuts...
I thought you could get LD 10 with Vox + CoD...![]()
We'll, I'll have to go back and relook at my list to see if I want to make any changes. FYI, I didn't use the Vox Network in my 500 list, but in my 1000 I did (or at least will try).
Yeah, the Guard Codex can sometimes give me a headache, I get it most of the time, but there are just a couple things that puzzel me, hence the use of the boards.
I initially was gonna use Commisar's, then I decided not too because I didn't want to pay for the pieces... But I got a very large collection (5 unopened pieces of Armor, 2 dozen little pieces and the 'last chancers box') for like $160, *cheer for ebay* and there were 2 Commisar's in them, so I'm gonna try'm. Now I just have to reread the Commisar Section and the Advisor Rules.
Thanks again, I'll try and post my list and fluff on the boards shortly. Until the next question arrises... :shifty:
Are you sure those are Commissars? That might be Colonel Shaeffer you're looking at.
Yeah postive. I got like 30 small 'blister packs' of peices, a couple ogryns, Commisars, priests, assasins, tech priests, ratlings, space marines, a couple Lt's... Kinda a hodgepodge of units. I got 2 Commisars with them. :w00t:
I need some clairifcaiton on one of the Doctines, the Sharpshooter one.
When I re-roll a dice, do I have to get the listed number in the Codex to make the hit, or is it meant as roll only once...
I like the analogy of their codex being like an Alegbra Book... I hate math... :x
Sharpshooters is a slight upgrade to the units accuracy.Originally Posted by GeneralGrant
You just get to re-roll all 1s that you roll ot hit.
Then if you get a 4+ on any of those re-rolls you hit as normal. If your re-roll is also a 1 it cannot be re-rolled as per the 'never re-roll re-rolls' rule.
This is used in every shooting phase.
Not sure about Iron D down the Vox. I'd say its in the same box as Commisar down the vox, I'm not sure whether it does or not.

Oh duh... LoL, miss read that completely... Thanks!
Iron discipline and voxes keeps coming up!
fluff wise it should. in the codex it is allowed and definately should be.
If you look at the FAQ you cant cos someone wasnt reading the codex while writing it obviously. personally where we play it can but for tournies some idiot has ruined it and everything else it seems grrr. basically ignore the FAQ's the create more problems than they solve.
