I'm currently serving overseas in an undisclosed location in Kuwait. Its hot, I miss gaming, and wanted some ideas and help on my new army.
Previously I had played Warhammer Fantasy - Orcs. I've never really been all that good with them but I love to paint and convert mini's (I suppose its that im a fine art student in college - Conceptual design). Plus they were a fun and sometimes frustrating army to play.
So I have come to the conclusion that I want to play an opposite style of army and I want to play in the WH40K universe. So I decided to play Space Marines Dark Angel Deathwing. I figured that with less models to paint and convert it would grant me more time to spend on each of them, plus Terminators don't suffer Animosity .
I hope to post my list sometime tomorrow when I get time. Its 1700 here, and almost time for work.
Thanks again guys, Love the site.
Welcome to LO, hope you enjoy your stay
As well as helping with Marines, im sure you can find some good advice on your Orcs too if you ever wish to go back and give them another shot
Those orcs are my first love of the game, I am by no means leaving them! Watching 100 gobbo's running to their slaughter amuses me greatly!
first off, i am new to these boards(not to the hobby), and so i say welcome.
Also, thanks for serving, as ex military, you have my respect.
As for your armies, orcs and gobbos are fun in there own rights. As for your 40k army, yes deathwing is tempting because you wont have alot of armies, but i will go ahead and warn you, the army itself isn't as forgiving. You really have to rely on your units, and you will always be outnumbered, forcing you to have to roll alot of armor saves as you get shot up. Also because your units are small, and pricy you have to make the most out of each unit. You also wont have alot of diversity. I personally didn't like that aspect of them not being as forgiving as just basic marines. With just normal marines, you can still take a few units of terminators, but i think under the new rules, pure deathwing armies will have a hard time. So i definitly suggest possibly taking a mixxed list. If you are going deathwing, as your troops, i would look into taking good support units to balance them off.
Also another drawback to the deathwing under the new rules is the objective scenarios. Sure terminators are more durable compared to normal marines, but points wise, you may want to look into other options. In the new rules, nearly 2/3 of the scenarios have objectives. And only troop units can claim the objectives. That means for deathwing, yeah you can deepstrike on objectives, get there fast, but to have enough troops, you will eat up alot of points taking termie squads as your troops. Other types of units can contest objectives, but only troops can claim them. So that is something else to think about. I am not trying to stop you from doing deathwing. You need to field an army you like, want and can enjoy. All i am doing is suggesting you don't take a pure deathwing force(termies and dreads and landraiders only). With 3+solid termie units as troops, and other good support elements such as ravenwing, and dark angel devestators/tactical marines you can. With the right support, your army can be very viable and devestating.
Also....if you haven't heard, Vanilla marines(your standard codex variants that is), are getting a really good new codex in october. So if you just want to do your own marine chapter, thats something to look forward to. From what i have gathered, they will be getting lots of new toys, new units, and some nice rules to make them very tactically flexible. Just another idea.
Again welcome to the board, and thanks for serving.
I have figured that I would be out numbered all the time, but that kind of interests me.
And Im planning on making all of my units magnetized so I can swap out gear as situation dictates.
And with the new rules and "Only troops being able to take objectives" really doesn't matter in a Deathwing army because if you take Belial Master of the Deathwing, terminators count as troops don't they?
And I plan on actually making the 2nd and 3rd company of the Dark Angels eventually. So if my Termies get stomped repeated, which they probably will, ill eventually mix in the Ravenwing...and eventually the 3rd company.
Mainly I chose this army because it appeals aesthetically to me...I know that sounds dumb, but I enjoy the painting/converting aspect of it more than the actual gameplay. I still play, but I spend far more time planning/building/painting the army...hell my Orc army took me 2 years to paint!
This will probably take me a year anyways. And I wont play until all of the units are painted. Dice gods favor the paint I hear...lol.
Thank you though for the heads up. I kind of figured that I would get killed alot, but its good to know for sure.
