Welcome to Librarium Online!
Jim here, started with the hobby about 17 years ago and have just returned from a 7 or 8 year long hiatus from the hobby as all of my housemates are wargamers and I was feeling all nostalgic.
I've gone right back to the first army I started with and I'm once more a Space Marine player, though I have dabled with the Tyranids in the past I always end up coming back to the old Warrior Monks, I find the fiction of them just too appealing.
Karantalsis has been running me through the rules, and cracking the whip to get me to play smarter and the friendly chap down at GW Loughborough has been relieving me of my money, something which almost set me off on the old man "I remember when a tactical squad was £10, and they were all metal miniatures!" rant.
At the moment I have a pair of Tactical Squads, a Devestator Squad, a Razorback and a Captain (who's waiting on some bitz from ebay) to build, at which point I will cheat and pass them onto my other housemate to paint. He is a lot better than me, and I can use the time to practice on some more Tyranids I was eyeing up in store yesterday.
Hey there Jimmy Carmine, what chapter of Space Marines do you have & do you have a specific hive fleet for your Tyranids? as for i have the "Black Templars" chapter & my Tyranids are from "Hive Fleet Leviathan".
Well anyways you will get a lot of helpful advice here so enjoy your stay & welcome to LO.
Hi Bizkit, thanks for the welcome.
Picking a chapter was the most difficult bit of this project. At first i was planning on building an Ultramarine force out of nostalgia, and then I saw the MK IV and V Forge World Marines and had ideas for building a Heresy era Ultramarines force.
I drew inspiration from the make up of the Roman Legions I was planning on building each squad of ten around the idea of the Contubernium, though I would have dropped one legionnaire to bring the squad number down to 10. The auxiliaries would have been represented by 2 of the marines Marines having white markings similar to the Whiteshields in the Imperial Guard.
Of course then I realised how much doing a Forge World army would cost and figured that was a bit much for my initial return to the hobby. Leading me back to 'modern' Ultramarines via a brief fascination with the Red Scorpions models.
However now that I had this wonderful plan for a Heresy Era Ultramarines Legion force I didn't want to have a 41st Millennium Ultramarines force instead, so after much tooing and froing between various 'official' Chapters I eventually thought 'sod it' and set about designing my own Chapter. After all I can always go back to the Heresy Era idea at a later date and build it on a squad by squad basis around other projects.
After some messing around with colours I settled on Fenris Grey as the base armour as it a nice dark stormy colour, with helmet, hands, shoulder trim, knees and elbows picked out in a burnished bronze/brass colour. As for a name the current working name is Storm Knights, but if I can think of a better name it will change.
Concept wise I'm thinking of a Crusading chapter centred on a specific area of space where their homeworld is. They will follow the Codex Astrates for the most part but with some minor deviations. At the moment the fluff is all in my head as I try and refine the concept while avoiding making them overpowered fiction wise. There will be no beating up an Avatar of Khaine one on one is this chapter.
Though I do have two ideas that I really like that I am planning on building the rest of the fluff around.
One is having them constantly over strength due to an excessively large Scout Company. With recruitment happening on their homeworld (I'm thinking 2 parts pre-heresy Caliban with 1 part Fenris) but the crusading companies also recruit at every given opportunity. While nowhere near as big as the Black Templars they would still have an excessive number compared to other more Codex Devout chapters. I really like the Scout miniatures so this will give me an excuse to have a fair few knocking about.
The second one involves the Chapter Master. A couple of friends sent me a Venerable Dreadnought for my birthday, and I really like the idea of having this guy be the Chapter Master in the fluff. Rules wise he is still an Elites choice, and would have to be accompanied by a HQ choice to serve as his right hand marine but I do like the idea of having this massive warrior who continues to lead his chapter even after taking crippling injuries.
As for the Hive Fleet I'm thinking of having them as a splinter fleet of Hive Fleet Moloch, that dinky little one coming from the galactic north. I was planning on basing the Storm Nights in the Galactic North so this will let me cross the fluff for both armies.

Fun fact of the day: In 10 minutes, a hurricane releases more (Wind powered) energy than all of the world's nuclear weapons combined.
