Hello all. Found your site while looking for a place to get advice on my forthcoming army.
Me: 24, living in Hawaii (Oahu), long time scale model builder and role player, new to the tabletop gaming scene. Picked up a copy of Battle for Macragge, and decided to give the full game a whirl.
Okay, on to my cry for help.
So I want to build and field an IG army. I have the codex, and I'm starting to get a decent grasp on building in general, using the points system, but I'm having a little bit of trouble in the design stage.
My army concept: Nedian 23 1/3 "Roger's Ragtags"
General (not quite finished at all) fluff, something along the lines of:
The Nedian 23 1/3 was the only unit to make it off of their planet when the attacks hit. They took heavy losses in doing so. Once off the planet, they realized that many other planets in their system had been hit simultaneously, and none of them had fared well. It seems that there was nearly no warning prior to the attacks.
Now, led by the young, charismatic and tactically genius "Captain" (he's really only a luitenant by rank, but he was swiftlly field-promoted in the battle to escape Nedia), the Nedian 23 1/3 has grown into a unit of remnants, pieced together by necessity, but held together by their mutual respect, courage, and fighting capability.
Army tactical concept: I fancy the idea of a blitz army. Fast, hard pounding fighters backed up by a barrage of heavy support. (As in a couple or three basilisks raining doom down from the skies.)
Is this feasible? Any ideas to help me out in the design stage? Too complicated an idea to start with? HELP!
Thanks in advance.

Are you thinking about a blitz army like in a WWII german blitzkrieg? If so an armoured fist concept is the logical choice. Not a whole lot of infantry, but all of it well-equipped with maybe a squad of hardened veterans, all in Chimeras, With a Hellhound at the front to clear the way.
The rear section would be the command section armed with mortars, as many as you can get. Equip your leader with vox-caster and all the squads as well, then his superior Ld will be transmitted across the whole battlefield. Then buy basilisks, as many as you can. Now you can execute the classic combined arms assault of the Wehrmach, pound a section of the enemy and roll your armoured forces through. now turn and hit the remainder of his forces in the flank.
This may not be the most cheesy army, but I think its colorful and a breath of fresh air from he standard "stand and shoot" IG armies.
This is also good if you are more comfortable painting vehicles than infantry.
An elire armoured company is a very good idea. Tanks may seem expensive but compare the amount of points you get and they are not compared to infantry. I recomend buying as a usable army:
Comand Tank - Leman Russ [3 heavy bolters with a commander in the turret converted and painted differently
Tank - Leman Russ with 1 lascannon
Tank - Leman Russ with 1 lascannon
Armoured Fist squad - Chimera and steel legion squad
That would be £20 + £20 + £20 + £18 + £18 + £20 + £20 + £20
= £156 total
