Hi, this is a father and son team. We are going to start with Space Marines BUT not sure if we want CC or shooty. We welcome any input or suggestions. We plan on going to the local group that plays on Thursdays. They use Grey Knights, Orcs and Dark Eldar so we want something different. I am interested in Eldar also but my son wants SM, so we will start there. From North Dakota.
Welcome to the forum to the both of you!
I am a space marine player myself(Dark angels),the space marines are the best army around to start if you have no prior experience with the hobby/game.They are easy to paint and almost all of their units are viable on the field.Other armies dont forgive mistakes, marines do.
As for shooty or cc its a matter of preference really. Both work and both have weaknesses. My suggestion to a beginner though is before you get to serious listing, buy a small army around 500pts and go play in the shop to get the feel and also get into grips(regarding painting)with the models.
That would be a space marine tactical squad a commander/librarian a dreadnaught and a transport perhaps.Whatever you decide to go CC or shooty you will always need those models in my humble opinion. From there one advice is sound and we all followed it before it was even given to us:Look what models you like and go that way.
Happy wargaming to the both of you!
Praise be to the Emperor!!
Hey there Strlamz, a father & son combo aye at least the both of you's will be able to play & learn together which is always a good thing, well the Eldar can be equipped for close combat or shooty or even both as for the Space Marines you could choose Ultramarines with their Codex (same as a WHOLE range of others that could be used) or you could go with the ones that have their own codex. (Black Templars, Dark Angels, Space Wolves, Blood Angels) Hope that also helps.
Well anyways you will get a lot of helpful advice here so enjoy your stay & welcome to LO.
Thanks for all the advice. It is nice to find a place where newbies can get some advice instead of smart comments. We are going to play vanilla marines to get the hang of it. Once we figure it out for the most part I told him he could pick a color or codex and go with that. He is excited about painting. I hated it years ago when I tried. BUT lol I have been reading about it and of course I was doing it wrong.
So maybe this time they will look a little better. I bought him the basic game with the smaller rule book. Do I need to get the full rule book right away? Thanks again for all the help.
No not really just as long as you have or get the little rule book from the 'Assault On Black Reach' box set then you will alright, it has ALL the basic rules you need in it to get started & it also has a 33-page Getting Started booklet, Dice, Templates & Range Rulers... & two armies as well. Hope that helps
