Welcome to Librarium Online!
Just wanted to introduce myself and apologize in advance for any hopelessly noob questions I'm likely to ask in the future. (Fortunately enough, I know to use and take full advantage of the "Search" feature in forums such as these *first* before I blindly ask a question you guys have answered for the nth time.)
I fall into that somewhat rare group of 40K fans that has been slowly building an army and reading the rules and the fluff for some time, yet has had very little actual play time under his belt.
Shortly before the 3rd Edition was released in '98 myself and several friends got interested in WH40K. My roommate at the time had purchased the 2nd Edition Codex: Chaos, copyright 1996 (back in the day when it was 144 pages and packed full of things like Wargear cards, Armor Penetration tables, and 25 pages to cover the Chaos Army list alone. I remember being a little overwhelmed by the rules at the time, hehe.
Anyways, he has decided on playing Chaos and I was leaning towards Space Marines. We purchased the 3rd Ed. boxed set (primarily to get the rulebook and the SM troops and speeder), and I started assembling my fledgling SM army and becoming familiar with the 3rd Ed. rules. . . And then two months later, everyone I knew in my area sharing interest in 40K moved away! (I even still have my roommate's 2nd Ed. Chaos Codex.) Doh. . . And though there were a few hobby stores in the area at the time that sold 40K some merchandise, I never managed to find anyone nearby that was actually playing.
All this time I've been keeping up with the rules and building and painting the odd SM model here and there. Finally a great little store opened nearby that actually host regular 40K gaming sessions!
Between old and recent purchases, I now come to the realization that I a fairly substantial number of troops and support elements (at least for a newbie) to deploy a reasonably versatile army of Space Marines. At least, assuming I ever finish painting them all. (I put off painting quite a number of them until I could find an excelent forum like this to read up on techniques and suggestions, so as not to ruin a good deal of my investment, hehe.)
I will probably be lurking quite a deal in the Painting forums, and posting the occassional question here and there. (My experience over the years has been more towards modelling military aircraft and mecha; I'm still relatively new at painting figures. . . unless you count Battletech mini-s.)
Anyways, I'm glad I found LO, and am happy to meet those who serve the Emperor (and even those that don't).
