P.S I know i can't spell
There is plenty of info about each single available army here at these forums under the Armies section. There will be several questions in each about 'why should I pick this army, and why are they good' etc etc. But just to get you started and give you something to look at first...Tyranids are a great army to play!
Do not meddle in the affairs of Tyranids, for you are crunchy and taste good with everything!
Games Workshop does have forums, go to the community section on their website.
It is usually best to just look at the models of the different armies and find your favourite looking ones, every army in the section on LO does have a sticky topic about it, tactics or why you should choose it. They are usually very long but will allow you to get a feel for the army.
Don't let anyone tell you an army is good and go for it from them, everyone is bias towards the army they play. Every army can win with the right list and tactics against any other, some are a bit harder than others though. Easy ones are probably space marines or chaos, chaos has a huge range of models and lists to choose from, and harder one may lean towards tyranids and dark eldar, at least for beginners. You will find information around to get the most out of all the armies though.
If yuare already leaning towards chaos, i say go with your gut feeling. People will advise you to the armies they play, but you will most likely go with what you like the most for whatever reason anyway.
What you really are looking for is somebody to talk you out of chaos, for specific reasons, and that is going to be the only thing that should sway your decision.
Remember this is going to be your army, not anybody elses. You are the one that is going to be spending the cash that you have on the hobby, and if you are planning on playing for a long time, it wil be something that is aesthetically pleasing to you. After all, if you don't like the models, don't collect that army. Paint schemes are of your choosing, if you don't see an existing colour scheme that you like, come up with one that you do.
I knoe very little about chaos, as i play Space Wolves -although the 13th company of Space Wolves, definately leans towards chaos, not that i have any though. Just another army for you to consider, SW 13th company, that is.
Space Wolves are badasses that operate just barely within the rules.
13th Co. didn't even know there were rules applying to how badass they could be.
... and Daemonhunters make it three - now just need a spare room to store it all!!!
I'm glad to see everyone suggesting you go with whatever army most appeals to you. In the past, a lot of LO members would be tripping over themselves to suggest this army or that --- seems we've all learnt our lessons by now.
Before you start buying units for whatever army you choose, I would suggest making your decision, then sitting with it for a while. An army is a long term investment. I bought some Tau minis, then some Daemonhunters minis, and eventually decided I didn't really want to field either. That equals a lot of wasted money. I eventually settled on Tyranids and have bought about $200 worth for that army, and now I don't have a desire to continue it. I'm in fact getting out of Warhammer 40k altogether in favour of Battlefleet gothic. All I'm suggesting is make sure that you are sure. Don't fail to commit like I did and waste hundreds of dollars on armies you're not really interested in fielding for more than a few weeks.
Oh, and one more thing. I won't suggest which army to select, but (and some may disagree with me for doing this) I will try to suggest one army you should probably stay away from. Don't do Space Marines (chaos is ok) unless you absolutely love them and don't want to do any other army. As you're new to 40k, let me tell you that most people who have played the game for a while come to regard Space Marines as a newbie army...over 50% of Warhammer players field them. They're boring and predictable, and it seems that every other player you turn to has at least one army of SM. I'm always arguing for variation...I mean, doesn't anyone else feel that it's dull to field an army that everyone else has? Pick anyone but SM...we'll all thank you for it, and you'll likely thank yourself once you realize how common and boring they are.
Boo on Space Marines...
i agrre with houston im doin spacemarines ive been playin for a few mounths so im pretty new, and i like them alot at the minute but alot of ppl do do them and it just dosnt go with a story line if ur fighting other space marines (but if u dont care bout the story line of the battle then ignore this) but my friend does so he has trouble comin up for a story line for us battling each other, but on the other hand they are a good army

First off; we get about 2042081310897 of these every day, so you should just check out the other posts before you post a new topic ((Im not trashin' on you)).
Secondly: all any of us can really say is: its up to your own personal desires for what you want your army to do. Ultimately, you just have to figure out what play style best fits you. But since even I have trouble figuring that out, I'll just be blunt and suggest an army for you:
Sure some people dont like thier asthetics, but for the most part, necrons arent half bad, and they challenge the marines ALOT. Not to mention, as far as fluff goes, EVERYONE hates necrons, so you'll always have a reason to battle. -winks-
Well thanks for your help guys and i think now i am going do a little more research but i think i am a little titlted chaos thanks for warning me to stay away for SM i was considering them becasue there figures look so cool i really like the Dreadnoughts look so cool choas Dreadnoughts don't really look that cool though but anyways thanx guys.
Dude dont choose a race just because its supposably good against anouther race choose one because you like it. Any race can be made to have an list that can be best against a certain race but choose it because you like it. I mean if you really care choose an army that doesnt suck against orks but seriously you have so many models to paint and take time to do oh yes every race is cool but you will kinda waste your time choosing one thats not your favorite.

I actually have a slug living in YOU, right now...
Slowly will start playing: Iyanden, and Chaos.
hay man it looks just by your name that you like chaos. good choice. (Y) thats what i play and i mean if you stick to just one thing for a while you will get good at it so......chaos is very flexable and i think you might like them. orks are also fun for newbs but dont be upset if you get slaughtered your first games.....(take my word on that one lol)but good luck with what you pick
sorry to post again on this but about the necron chat above. I dont know what it is but i slaughter necrons everytime i play against them. I have never been beaten by the necrons yet. I play khorne and i started orks and no matter what i just beat the p*ss out of them. Dude jsut take my word and play chaos.....they have all the same stuff SM do but they can have theirs with a side of "crack"......chaos is just a great army and will be great for you to start.....so what if the chaos dont have like the best models out there but they have the biggest room for conversion. have fun bud.... (Y)
Cause the world we know dont beat to just one drum, what might be right for you might not be right for some, you take the bad you take te good and there you have the facts of life......sit ubi sit...good boy
