Welcome to Librarium Online!
I'm brand new and want to start warhammer. does anyone have any good army suggestions for me besides chaos marines? otherwise does anyone have an arny that would be especially good at defeating the chaos marines?
That depends on your style of play. If you want a handful of elite men with long backgrounds and stuff, Space Marines are for you. Choas Space Marines are about the same, only they are 'evil' and have demons. If you want a humongous army to overwhelm your opponents, then pick the Tyranids. If you want speed and agility, then the Eldar and the Dark Eldar, etc. etc.
"Greatness is not in where we stand, but in what direction we are moving. We must sail sometimes with the wind and sometimes against it, but sail we must, and not drift, nor lie at anchor."

Well, for once, why defeating CSM? All armies can defeat a CSM army, when I think of it, every army can defeat any other army in the game, GW balance the diffrent armies so this can be possible.
Why don't you look for an army that has a background you like. Just go to a GW store and take a look in the codices or google for the armies.
You want to choose an army that you will be happy not only playing, but also painting and converting. As has been said, any army can defeat any other, it all depends omn your style of play.Originally posted by achilles1234@Jan 14 2005, 021

Hopefully this will be of help;
Vanilla, Ultramarines - The "noob" army by popular opinion. Very good all round troops.
Blood Angels, Black Templar, Space Wolves, RavenGuard - Close Combat armies, all focusing on different aspects of assault.
Dark Angels - The "Dark" army with a terrable secret, predominantly shooty
Imperial Fists - The Seige army, defenders of Terra
White Scars - Biker / Fast Attack army
Black Legion - The all round chaos army
World Eaters - Khorn, The close combat army
Thousand Sons - Magic Users, high wound troops
Death Guard - Nurgle, High toughness troops
Emporors Children - Slanessh, Noise Marines and Sonic Weapons
Iron Warriors - Large use of heavy Weapons / heavy vehicles
Imperial Guard - Very shooty, but standard troops are weakest in game. Lots of tanks and heavy weapon options.
Necrons - Robot army, small selection of elite units
Tyranids - Traditional "aliens". Mostly Close combat but some ranged. Most units can mutate to allow customised units.
Vanilla - All usnits in an eldar army are specialised for one task. No "Jack-of-all-trade" units.
Alaitoc - Scouting Army, lots of infiltrators
Ulthwe - Psyker Army, Seer council and lots of warlocks
Sam Hian - Jetbike Army, Lots of fast attack
Beil Tan - Aspect Army, Many of the elite units become troop options
Iyaden - Death Army, Wraithlords and Wraith Guards
Dark Eldar - Fastest Army in the game, Very powerfull close combat units, and good choice of shooty units. Reguire good use of stratergy to be any good.
WitchHunters - Anti Psyker Army, Slightly less powerfull than S.Marines. Large use of Flamers and Melta weapons
Demonhunters - Anti Demon Army. Grey Knights and Inquisitors.
Orks - Dreadfull at shooting, excel in Hand-to-hand. The rag-tag army of the universe.

SM are good for beginners and good for pros. They have strong armour and Look REALLY COOL. You want to choose an army that looks good to you or you wont be satisfied. That's unless you lose every battle, but that's unlikely to happen. Also you want an army you can paint well at. Go to GW and ask for painting lessons, If you have trouble painting what you choose and can't get any better at it then pick a different army.
welcome to LO and enjoy your stay (Y)
We have a quiz (beta) running where the purpose was to give the user a hint on what army he should collect, but currently its only for 40k though..
