Does anyone else think that LO is too over commercialised?
When I first joined a couple of years back, it was a small but warm community whom actually kind of knew each other. Right now its a mess!
I mean, there are different "classes" of members depending if you pay money or not. There are ads all over the screen and LO is becoming increasingly entangled with all these commerical organisation for the "benefits" of its members.
Nothing is allowed here! No links, no sales, no political posts, infact anything even slightly challenging of the Games Workshop position gets shut and locked down.
Add to the fact that the Fantasy section of the site is in shambles (with the interesting Tactics section being deleted for no apparent reason).
There's a fine line between expansion and exploitation....
What do you guys think?
Come into our musty tombs @khemri.co.uk
(600+ members and growing).
I wouldnt say we got ads all over! In the forum you only got the adsense at the bottom. Without adsense LO would be over ages ago!
If you want to sell, please do it at ebay and include your ebay ID in your profile, this way other users can see your items.
One way to advertise your site (I think you would like that) is to post articles here at LO and you are then allowed to include a link at the bottom of each article

Blackhat's new blog network for terrain crafters!
I don't think, wait, I know LO doesn't have too many Ads. I don't mind a few in one block at the bottom. Some of them are actually useful. :p
Paying is optional, and as with most things in life, the more you pay the more you get!
Okay, some older sections may have been deleted but I haven't really seen anyone requesting them back.
As for no links, rules, or political issues that's up to the Owners of LO and their decision is probably for the best.
I like LO just the way it is.
It grew. But I would hardly call it a mess.Originally Posted by dornI see two "classes" based on payment. Subscribers, and everyone else. I see no particular "benefits" of becoming a subscriber, beyond helping to support a forum you enjoy and like. God knows, if I had the money, I'd subscribe. Also, I see no ads at all, anywhere. Even thsmall line of links at the bottom of the page has dissapeared in the last skin update.Originally Posted by dornLinks (to GW or copyright, I assume) never were. Sales are much better left to eBay, which has bee integrated into the avatar display, or the trading forum, which hasn't seen much use. As for political threads, well, if you say the crap that they all started you would be glad that they are banned. I believe that they are permitted in the enhanced users forum though, but access to that is not based on capitalisation at all, but how responsible a member you are deemed to be by the mods and your fellow members.Originally Posted by dorn
The fantasy site is probably partway through the rebuild, and only has a very small percentage of the overall activity. Whether that bothers you, I don't know.I think that the forum is much better than it was a year ago, and at half of the members. As it was when I joined.Originally Posted by dorn
Maybe it is just the easy companionship of knowing everyone on the forum well that you miss? Perhaps participating in the Lo IRC channel will help with that. The java applet is /u]here[/u] or it is on irc://undernet/warhammerfun/ if you use a client.

Running a site like LO takes money, money that comes out of Blackhat's pocket. If this site keeps soaking up money without giving any back how long do you think Blackie will be abel to keep this place open? The ads are a necissary to keep the site open and I for one don't mind a bit. As far as subscribers go I beleive they deserve anything the admins decide to give them. These people are helping to keep this site alive so that freeloaders like you and me can still enjoy it. I'm glad they're here and glad they're being rewarded for what they're doing. They don't have to make donations y'know, and Blackhat doesn't have to keep this site going.I mean, there are different "classes" of members depending if you pay money or not. There are ads all over the screen and LO is becoming increasingly entangled with all these commerical organisation for the "benefits" of its members.Links are allowed in signatures. Link to whatever you want as long as it's age appropriate (no porn links..obviously) and not copywritten GW material. Sales are allowed to an extent. If you'd take a look at the front page you'd notice that you can now advertise your EBay items on LO and there's a trader zone full of people looking to make deals. Political discussions are allowed too. You can become an enhanced member without spending a dime and gain access to the Enhanced Members forum.Nothing is allowed here! No links, no sales, no political posts, infact anything even slightly challenging of the Games Workshop position gets shut and locked down.
Not to be rude but you ,I, or pretty much anybody else really have no right to complain. I mean you get to use this site for free, what more do you want? You don't have to come here y'know?

As a subscriber I have to say that I think LO is not a commercial entity at all, if it were it would be a rather bad one as you can access all of the site without paying a penny as Edicus has said, myself I pay because I have spare cash at the moment and LO has been good to me. As for the community feeling, its still here, theres people I talk to regularly, theres people whos names I recognise and have alot of time for and others not so much.
The community feel I find is especially true on the army specific boards, for example I dissappear for 3 months or so come back and the first reply I get to a post is "How are you doing mate, haven't seen you in a while. Oh and your wrong....." .
On the subject of sales on the site, you have to be very carefull, LO is not an occupation for black hat and others, it is not paying their morgage. As you can clearly see he is an interested hobyist. However, should we permit sales etc on the site, if those sales went wrong (you sent your money, but he/they didnt send their items, or even you didnt get them, then potentially the site and its managers would be liable, clearly this is a recipie not only to ruin the site but also all the management. It is only common sense (and actually common practice amongst the better run, less chaotic boards) not to permit sales
I don't agree with this as the fact of the matter is that we (unfortunatly) live in a capatilist system which means that everything costs money as that is the case the website should at least be trying to break even (especailly since i beleive blackhat does this as a hobby) as such having a little adverts i feel is a small price to pay for the service that we are provided with.
I just have one or two things to say.
LO is one of only two GW forums I frequent, some of you use more forums than that, others use just LO. As such it is my daily source of all infomation regarding my hobby. This is a free service for all who want to partake of it and many kudo's for blackhat for making it so.
I subscribe because like karrot dialysis I want to give something back to a site which I have used for nearly 3 years. A few adds here and there would not bug me in the least to keep this establishment open.
Just a question to leave you with........
Can you imagine the up roar if Blackie decide to make this a subscription only site? Not that it is possible but imagine....................

That, I feel is the decisive point. I don't think I need to explain why. <_<Originally Posted by Edicius
