Is it just me, or does LO have a major database error at about the same time every day?
For the last week (at least) every time I try to get on between 5pm and 6pm Australian Eastern Standard Time, I get a Database error that lasts for a minimum of 10 mins, and an average of 30 mins (or so). The biggest problem it causes though, is that it technically logs me on, but can't access anything due to the error, and so next time I can successfully get on, I have lost all the "since last visit" posts. Would it be possible to add a "posts in last 12 hours" option too?

No, it's not just you. It's pretty much exactly the same time each day. Perhaps something to do with server traffic?
I've also had the same problem with the lack of 'since last visit' posts. Though see that I don't post all that much it usually isn't a problem. I just go to my profile and click on the 'find all posts made by Xiahou Dun' and look at the most recent ones.
"You challenge me knowing that I am Xiahou Dun!?"
Yepp, it have been happening for some months now. I wonder why it happens (me think they are updating the database then)...
the errors are breeding, they're starting to spread across the whole day, is there anyone who can save us from these database errors? won't someone call supermod?

And I thought that it was just me.
I find the multitude of database errors extremely frustrating, especially because the database have a tendency to die while Im writing posts, which of course are lost when I throw them at a downed server (and no, the back button does not help, but merely returns me to the reply page *without* saving my post...). I too find that the database errors are mostly at the same time, usually around noon for me.
I just thought that the database occured when blackhat was working on something with the site? Like changing the layout here and there.. I sometimes spot a slight diffrence from database error to database error. Am I right, or is my imagination running wild with boredom in those periods of time?
Now that I think about it, LOs outrageous downtimes is by a wide margin the biggest disadvantagethis page has to the competing forums, like warseer and 40konline. If I were a newbie who checked out LO for the first time right now in the same time period as I have tried to post this message like.. 10-20 times, I would have been strongly discouraged by the non working database, and I would most likely drift on to warseer...
It was down for over two hours today. It does seem to be getting worse.
Is there anyone that can give a definative reason for this so I don't have all this pent up frustration?

I hadn't really noticed anything but yesterday 2 or 3 or my posts were lost. I posted them and went back later and they just weren't there. So far it hasn't been very bad to me but that was mildly annoying.

To be fair to the LO staff though, the database for this php forum must be huge, and big, complex databases are evilly difficult things to administer at the best of times.Originally Posted by Sareld
I have one piece of advice for anyone posting on any forum, once you've written your post, highlight the whole thing and copy to clipboard! Then, even if the server does lose your post, you can simply paste it back into a new reply box and try again. I do this every single time I write a post on every forum I visit, as you never know when the server is going to throw a wobbler!

Good point Tzeentch lord, tis the best way to avoid typing out long posts. Even on a relatively small, simle forum you should copy paste your post, as more often than not you get timed out when writing a long post.
With the database errors, I usually only get one when I first try to log on at college, if i leave it 5 minutes and come back its perfectly fine. Odd.
Yeah, those database errors seem to hapen anywhere from 5:30 to 7:30 for me, and it's a bit annoying when you're on dial-up, and you can't get on LO in the time that you're on.
Sometimes it won't let me post, and its annoying, particularly when I'm trying to update on of my RPG's or something, but I just copy and paste it into word or notepad etc., and when it's working again I paste it in and post it.
