Say it aint so! Spam ads on LO?

    Hi,

Went into a thread in General discussion. In the advertising space at the top of the page, there was one of those spammy 'youre the winner! - click here' scams..

I thought LO would be above approving that type of crap to appear here.. Whats the deal?

    Cheers

    1) LO doesn't run on prayers and air, its needs money.

    2) We have subscribers, but this isn't SA, so more money is need for server upkeep.

    3) Ad companies pay for space on sites (especially those with high traffic).

    4) Blackhat probably just sells the webspace to the ad companies, they just insert the ads they choose I guess.

They're easy enough to ignore anyways, so it's not really a big deal.

One thing that does annoy me about them:

Sometimes one of the ads is bigger than the space alloted for it, and it screws with the dimensions up top.

But it's just a small gripe really, we all know that bandwidth costs $$.

If it gets too costly you could always look into becoming a .....provider (wrong word maybe).

My company went that route, we provide net connections and webhosting for businesses close by. And as a result we get unlimited hosting and bandwidth.

It's really more along the lines of we're a sub-provider for a larger company, but I don't really keep up on that end, I'm just the printer.

And you could always look into better merchandising, that can help a lot.

But I bet you've already considered all that.

Im aware that LO needs money.. I just think there are better ways of doing it than putting stuff like that there, which can subject LO members to scams & viruses etc. Im not stupid enough to fall for those things myself, but I cant speak for everyone.

If money is becoming a motivation on LO then it wouldnt surprise me if membership fees arent too far away. :ninja:

I guess you should prepare to be surprised.

double.bind, great advice. I've got Firefox myself, and it's much better than IE in every way.

you know... if you realy dont want to see adds, then i'de imagine blackhat would be more then willing to have you send him a check for the hosting fees, plus his time and effort.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that if you subscribe (see User CP area for details), you don't see ads anymore.

If you use adblocks you dont support the site and the community. We are working on a way to give adblock users less privileges on the site.
