As mentioned in another thread, I've 'got to' start playing 2k points next week (by virtue of everyone in GW playing 2k points). This is what I've come up with:
Slann Mage-Priest – 2nd Generation, Plaque of Dominion, Plaque of Tepok, Diadem of Power, BSB
Scar Vet.- Great Weapon, Light Armour, Shield, Quetzl, Sotek, Jaguar Charm
Skink Priest - Lvl 2
16 Saurus - FC
11 Skinks - Jav + Shield
11 Skinks - Blowpipe, Scouts
10 Skinks – Blowpipe
6 Saurus Cavalry
3 Salamander Packs
Further to this I have another Skink Priest and Saurus Hero, another unit of Skinks, two more units of Saurus, and a couple more CoRs. I'm happy to buy more stuff if need be (I'd have 6 Krox in 2x units of 3 except GW ran out, so I'll be picking them up next week), however I have bought two 2000+ point armies in the last 6 weeks so I'm trying not to
Mostly I'm looking for comments on:
Magic Item choices for the Slann & Skink
Comments on using Aura of Quetzl on JSoD, likely dropping BSoQuetzl, and then if so, would you keep LA/shield for it's low points cost to get a 3+ save vs shooting?
Core - One unit of Saurus for the Slann with BSB, 3 Skink units. Seems like it should be par for the course.
Special Units - Cavalry and Terradons worthwhile, or should they be something else? I'm thinking a unit of flyers is never bad (especially given I play empire), but should I use more of them maybe? And I'm still unsure about Saurus cavalry, what complements them in your experience?
Rares - Are Salamanders really worth taking over a juicy Dogs of War unit like Bronzino's Galloper Guns?
.....OK, the last sentence was a joke
great list, mine is very similar ,but i take tg and 2 units of 3 kroxs and 20 s warriors
i dont take s cav but then again i play 2250
but still great list 8X
Very similar to the Slann lists I use frequently but I prefer Plaque of Protection over Dominion. Sometimes you just need that 2+ ward save more than the extra dice but I frequently play vs dwarfs so Dominion is not such a sound investment.
I also use Saurus in blocks of 20 at 2k and above. 16 is a peculiar number for this edition.
I have not got around to using Terradons yet as I dont own any currently, I like to use steed of shadows on the jaguar charmed scar vet to silence war machines usually from the first turn. Also shadows has some of the most powerful spells in the magic lores.
Keep the shield on the Scar Vet, sometimes you may need it! Charging a lone character with a hand weapon and shield your save is 1+, nice when str7 is overkill.
Overall a solid and sound list.
He's taking 16 saurus so he can put the Slann amongst them.
I would drop the spawning of Quetzl on the JSoD and instead give the Slann's unit the spawning of Tlazcotl. Immune to psychology isn't a bad thing to have when you have about 1000VP tied into that unit ^_^
I think that Terradons and Cavalry ARE worth it. They are both fast, Terradons can help you versus shooty armies, and both are great as a flank charge.
The Rep Thumb is to the left of my post, in case you didn't see it.
terradons aren't that good at flanking. They don't negate ranks remember, so the only bonus would be to get the additional +1 in the flank. They do pump out some serious attacks though, 3 s4 attacks each is nothing to be sniffed at.
Be careful when charging them into some units though. With only t3 and a 6+ save the enemy can allocate attacks against them to up his CR quite easily.
I prefer them to march block and mage/war machine hunt
Hey what?? What am I missing here? Why can't Terradons negate ranks? Have I misread something in the rulebook???terradons aren't that good at flanking. They don't negate ranks remember, so the only bonus would be to get the additional +1 in the flank. They do pump out some serious attacks though, 3 s4 attacks each is nothing to be sniffed at.
Apart from that I'd like to say how good they are at character hunting. Just charge them into a unit with a wizard or hero (or a lord at a push but certainly if he is an elf) and unleash 6 or 7 (if you take a brave) S4 attacks straight at him. Then you hit and run...
