Hi all. I've built a list trying to combine the tons of lists and advice here, and my own personal experience and tastes. I made it pretty magic heavy, maybe even on the silly side (please let me know if you think it's too magicy).
Army General, Hero
2nd Generation Slann
Plaque of Tepok
Plaque of Dominion
Totem of Prophacy
Charm of the Jaguar Warrior
Blessed Spawning of Sotek
Blessed Spawning of Queztl
Diadem of Power
Javlin and Shields
21 Saurus Warriors
Sun Standard of Chotek
Blessed Spawning of Quetzl
3 Salamander Hunting Packs
Now my logic: The Slann I figured, "Hey, he's supposed to be super magical, so go big or go home". The 21 Saurus are his bodyguard, cheaper than Temple Guard, and cause fear so getting charged will be a *little* more difficult. There's a chance of outnumbering as well with the big toad in the unit, so an autobreak from fear will be nice. Also have the -1 to shoot, because I fear for my toad's safety
The skinks with the javs and shields will screen the Kroxigors. The two other units of skinks will scout, with a priest each. The priests to provide line of sight and attempt to magically bolster the poisonous skinks.
The JSOD will simply run around and try to squish things...gave him a shield so that when he's running around he'll have a respectable armor save to avoid getting shot to death.
I have a gross habit of having all these awesome plans laid out in my head that NEVER EVER EVER happen the way they're supposed to on the tabletop . Does any of this look that way to you?
I am pretty sure the diadem and a scroll puts your skink priest over budget.
Does a second gen take a lord and a rare or a lord and a hero slot? If lord and hero then you can only have 2 not 3 heros.
I don't find braves are worth their points but as this is a friendly list....
Yeap, you're right about the diadem. Too much shuffling! I'll remove a dispell scroll.
I was wondering about your second point...a second gen Slann takes takes a Lord, Hero, Rare choice. So, obviously, he fills the Lord. He also takes a Hero slot, but you can have a total of 4 at 2k points. So you can have 3 more heroes, even if the Slann is taking one. However, with 1 Slann and 3 heroes, you have 4 total character models, which is allowable at 2k points. BUT! The Slann takes two slots, so you've really used 5 total slots, (but only 4 models) which is one more than allowable total characters. Is it legal or no?
I switched the braves in and out, in and out trying to get a complete point total. Now that I know I've screwed up one of the priests, I'll rework the list and see if the braves stay. Right now they're just there to soak up points and take a challenge in the horrible event where they get charged =)
Okay, traded the dispell scroll from the priest with the diadem for wizard level 2, and removed all 3 braves from the skink units. Everything else the same. That comes to a clean 2000 (unless my spreadsheet is off again )
The saurus can't take a magic standard!
Besides that, I don't know. I've always struggled to gain a real supremacy through magic and have it really win games for me in the way I can with O+G. Don't get me wrong, I love using magic, its just that in order to get the most out of it it needs to be enhancing the rest of the army as well, and that list just doesn't seem to have enough army to enhance.
Bummer on both counts! So who do I lose, one of the priests or the JSOD? (I'm thinking Priest)
And Saurus with a standard! I'm a dummy. I had TG in there originally, and just swapped 'em out for the SW. I see your point about not much army to enhance. That's been my fear. Now that I can free up points spent in illegal characters and standards I can probably get more army!
Speaking of illegal standards...now I gotta go with the fear standard, or the -1 to shoot standard. I'm leaning towards the -1 to shoot since it'll always be useful, and the fear one will be situational.
No probs, easy mistakes to make!
Both standards are situational TBH, though you could give them the ITP instead of quetzl and keep the -1 to hit, pretty much covering both bases. Depends which 2 out of the 3 you value more against your reular oppos.
You're going magic heavy. No choice between the JSOD and SP, gotta be the SP, or you're leaving toady unsupported. Try a bound item too.
Make the skinks up to 13 if you can. It reduces their chances of running away as it takes them into the next panic check threshold boundary (i.e. kill 4 to cause a panic check instead of 3). Seriously, do this if you can.
The diadem can still go on the slann if you want, freeing up a few more points on one of the priests. My preferred makeup for these 2 guys would be stone and scroll each.
As for slotting in an extra unit, I'd say either a small unit of terradons for like-for-like (ish) JSOD replacement or stick an extra kroxy or two in that unit.
Really, if you go magic heavy, you have to go all out magical to win, esp. with a slann. Never play warhammer with a halfhearted strategy. ALL OR NOTHING!
Right on. That all makes a lot of sense. I'll see what I can do and post what I come up with. Thanks for all the help!
Follow-up...about the stones on the Skinks. An extra 2 dice to cast, and not worried about them exploding?
