No magic defense you say? Well any magic missile hitting the TG unit (which the Scar-Vet will be in) will deflect onto the wizard on a 2+, meaning a wizard is fireballing himself hehe. Also the TG cause all wizards within 18" and LoS test for stupidity.
I think the Skink Chief is the new FSoD. 20" fly move, lands in forest and has 3 S5 shots at 16" range at BS5!! The terradon can drop rocks on a fly over and this comes with 3+ save (enchanted shield) and Ld7. This guy can kill wizards, skirmishers, war machine crews and march block and shouldn't die too quickly if you fly from forest to forest.
The major thing lacking is skink meatshields (I know) but I just cant find the points for them without disabling one of the other infantry units.
I like this as its got big infantry who can take a charge (2+ saves or 21 S4 attacks, you choose) and its got magic items that were never used in previous editions.
What are your thoughts?
I think the TG are uneccesary as they come into their own with a Slann, 325 points in 1 unit is a lot at 1k. Take another block of spear saurus or make your other blocks 18 strong for 6 wide.
Give the scar veteran the sword of the hornet so he can remove some of the enemies attacks before the saurus are cut down, this increases the saurus return attacks.
The skink chief is a good idea, might be worth giving him some terradon buddies to join.
Saurus need support, especially an all saurus block army. If they get march blocked or the enemy can bring lots of magic or missile weapons to bear you will suffer. With the curent book I found saurus to be a hindrance at 1k points and always preferred the fast moving skinks and kroxigor. I think 1k would be a good points lvl to field the new skink/krox mixed unit.
A mixed unit would give you some speed, the skinks would be albalative wounds and combat res whilst the krox could kill things missile troops. Otherwise they would be suitable flankers for the saurus blocks. I think if you drop the temple guard you can fit in a mixed unit and some skirmishers.
this is the problem with coming up with lists before the new book actually "arrives". I thought that due to the brb flyer rules that a character on a flying beast couldn't join a friendly unit. There is a special character (tictactoe I believe) that lets him join a unit of terradon riders, but I don't think the regular skink chief has this ability. He definately needs some cover though, I agree.
Thanks for reading, first of all.
I might just have spear saurus instead of TG, I just like the new models.
I cant give the Scar-vet Sword of the Hornet AND Mirror shield, the points jst dont add up. I want to use the shield as I think its a GREAT item and will be a nasty surprise for a dakka wizard. He does need some kind of bite though, maybe sword of might?
Dont know on the terradons + characters front, I dont hae enough points for 3 terradons and I think 1 terradon is a lot easier for the enemy to forget about.
There is one problem with the mixed units, the fact that skinks are in them. If a unit is in combat it will probably go for the squishy T2 no save skinks and just deal with the Krox attacks (now not as bad). 6 attacks (5 in front row plus champ) should kill 3-4 skinks. Easy combat res for the enemy in my opinion. Maybe as a flanking unit but not as an anvil.
Ill try and drop in some skirmishers to shield and generally be a nuisance.
I think the skirmishers will help against 2 issues: magic and shooting.
The skinks "cohort" units have javelins, hand weapons and shields. So a 5+ save in combat from the front. The idea would be the mixed unit as a fast flanker to deny ranks. With 2 krox they should bring more combat res than you lose through skink deaths from a flank. They wont stand up to elite infantry such as black guard or chaos warriors (even in the flank) but they should do ok at 1k points.
I think skirmishing skinks would protect the saurus better than the shield. Its nice but not as effective as skirmishers who also protect you from missile troops too.
