Building up to 2k (a 1,000 and 2,000 pt list)

Ok, so I have decided that in order to spend less money (I.E. to not spend money on models that wont fit into my eventual 2,000 pt list) I have done the planning process somewhat backwards.

I decided to start out with the 2,000 pt list that I want to have soon and make a 1,000 pt list out of it.

here is the 2,000 pt list. Comments and Criticisms are appreciated

    Slann Mage Priest
    Focus of Mystery
    Focused Rumination
Cupped Hands of the Old Ones

    Skink Priest
    Level 2
    Plaque of Tepok
    Dispel Scroll
    Engine of the Gods

    Saurus Scar-veteran
    Light Armor
    Shield
    Sword of the Hornet
    Cold One

    18 Saurus Warriors
    Standard
    Spears

    10 Skink Skirmishers

    10 Skink Skirmishers

    10 Skink Skirmishers

    16 Temple Guard
    Full Command

    5 Cold One Cavalry

    2 Salamander hunting Packs

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now from this list I have developed a 1k list. Here it is (also open to comments and criticisms)

    Skink Priest
    Level 2
    Plaque of Tepok
    War Drum of Xahutec
    Engine of the Gods

    18 Saurus Warriors

    10 Skink Skirmishers

    10 Skink Skirmishers

The lists seem very playable. Personally, I would prefer the command on the cold ones over the temple guard. If you switch up one of your skink units to be ranked up, you could get the command on the cold ones and an extra handler for the salamanders. Of course, I would also suggest running the salamanders in two separate units.

    Good luck,

Why would you prefer command on the cold ones? I really dont like ranked up skinks, they are just giving points to the enemy in my opinion.

With a good enough reason I might be persuaded to take a unit though.

Now I am thinking about dropping the salamander packs for some terradon riders. I'm not sure how suvivable the packs are, and between Burning Alignment and the Slann slinging magic missile spells I'm not sure they are really necessary.

The terradons on the other hand would really add something to my list.

I think the cold ones need it more. The temple guard are stubborn and ItP so even if they lose combat, the odds are good that they will hang around. Without any ranks or combat resolution bonus though, the cold ones are susceptible to being beaten in combat. That is why I would prefer the extra champ attack and banner on the cold ones.

As to the ranked up skinks, every game I play, I have to sacrifice a unit of some kind to setup favourable counter charges or flank charges. This is why I use great eagles in my wood elf lists. You want to field the lowest possible point unit to use as a bait unit or to redirect charges away from your important units. Being the lowest cost unit, a ranked up 10 strong skink unit can provide this tactical option.

See, I have found that skirmishing units make great bait to set up charges, without actually having to sacrifice the unit.

That and my main opponent is DE, so skirmishers can actually survive shooting better in order to act as bait.

I try not to let my cavalry get into combats on their own, which is why I usually just run them with music. However I can see how the command on them in that "just in case" scenario would be very nice.

If, I get a unit of 3 teradon riders instead of the salamanders (which is what I am leaning towards doing) I would have enough points left over to get command on what needs it. What do you think?
