1500 points - Hard as nails

Hi there, so I just went over the Lizardmen army book and felt like making an army list (still considering whether I want to start the army or not). The list I've written below is my attempt to make an impenetrable battle line that can be versatile against any opponent. From what I can read the Slann mage-priest can be a bsb and an army general at the same time? If not I might have to make room for a scar-vet as my bsb.

Lords: Slann Lore of life, knows all spells, crown of command, dispel scroll, BSB (360 points)

Core: 25x Saurus Warriors, Full command (305 points) - bunker for the slann (Horde formation)

Core: 10x Skink skirmishers (70 points)

    Special: Stegadon (235 points)

    Special: stegadon (235 points)

Special: 6x cham. skinks (72 points)

Special: 6x cham. skinks (72 points)

Rare: Salamander - 3 skink crew (75 points)

Rare: Salamander - 3 skink crew (75 points)

    Total: 1499 points

    Lords: 24%
    Core: 25%
    Special: 41%
    Rare:10%

So for a quick summary: Slann joins the warriors and heads up the middle of the board, stegadons on either flank within 12" on the slann (makes my army pretty compact, but will hopefully do the trick) The saurus and stegadons are all stubborn with LD 9 cold blooded rerollable so they shouldn't break. everytime the slann casts a spell he can heal himself or the stegs (and he can regrow the warriors). All skinks and salamanders are there to give me a bit more "mobility" they will take care of possible flankers or annoying fast cav to make my battleline intact. Cham. skinks will hopefully be able to tie up a cannon or 2 (worst nightmare of my stegs). I know my Slann is exposed without temple guard, but he still got W5, T4, 4+ ward and he can reheal himself with every spell cast (and he got 7 spells )

Hope I havn't overlooked some rules that makes my list illegal (havn't had much time to look through the army book). Anyways I'm open for comments and suggestions - for 1,500 points I think it's pretty tough to deal with.

    - Vezzax

I believe your list is legal but there are a few things I'd like to address:

    1. YES your slann can be a bsb and general, he can also take magical items which is nice
    2. Although this is a small points list I still would never take a regular stegadon again. 40 pts for an extra point of strength is worth it. Not to mention the great bow is replaced with two giant blow pipes. Giant bows are slow to fire so at least this way if ya don't get the charge off ya can still stand and shoot (but you ALWAYS wanna be the charger is possible).
    3. NEVER take a salamander without the extra handler, just pretend they cost 80 points haha. A single bad dice roll can take your lizard out of commission, extra handler stops this.
    4. Cut the crown of command item entirely, having the slann stubborn does NOT give whatever unit he joins stubborn, completely wasted. If anything think about replacing it with the standard of discipline. Being Ld10 is really nice (plus hes already the bsb).

Still seems like a pretty solid list, especially if you can keep throne of vines going. Get shield of thorns up early (as well as throne of vines), that way the enemy has to think about which they'd rather dispel. Or they end up dispelling both and wasting a magic phase

Lets follow along with UbaNess's comments:

1: Yes you can be both. I would always take the focused rumination over the focus of mystery. The extra dice are what make the slann dominant in magic.
2: I have no problem with the baby stegadon. But I would personally give up one and a unit of chams for another unit of warriors. Eighth is the block troops edition of the game.
3: Yes, you should always get an extra handler if you are running lone salamanders.
4: Don't know where you get this from UbaNess. The crown of command will make the unit stubborn, and is a nice item to have in a warrior block.

    Good luck,

I am right 94% of the time, why worry about the other 3%.

Completely agree, ancient stegadons might just be a personal preference. Also awesome about the stubborn, looked it up and I was doing that wrong. Ld10 is always nice tho!

I'll cut both cham. skink units down to 5 models saving me 24 points. With the extra point left over from my previous list I'll grab standard of discipline and 2 handlers for my salamanders making my list 1500 on the spot. I see a valid in point in taking ancient stegs over regular, but there's only so much you can do with 1,500 points.

Doing a bit of theory crafting do you guys reckon that this army is scary considering the average 1,500 point lists I could meet?

Looks pretty good to me. Something I like about our army is the fact that we have at least something decent in every phase of the game (shooting, magic, etc). The main things I'd be worried about with this army is some quality war machines from maybe empire or dwarves, as long as you deploy your chameleon skinks well (and have some decent dice rolls lol) you should be ok, stegadons die scary-quick to an empire great cannon. Become very familiar with the lore of life and you should be off to win some games!
