Please have a read through of the following and see what you think:
Oldblood on Carnosaur, Spawnings of Itzal, Tlazotl, Quetzl. L\A, Ench Shield, Blade Chotec.
Scarvet, Btle Std, Spawning Tepok, Tlazcotl, L\A.
Skink Priest, Diadem Power.
21 Saurus inc full cmnd.
20 Saurus inc full cmnd.
3 Salie packs
3 Salie packs
5 Saurus Cac inc chmp.
3 Jungle swarms
The Oldblood and the salies are on one flank. General's leadership + combat monster should make this an effective missile and fight unit.
The 2 Saurus units march up the middle.
Other flank guarded by swarms with cav providing flanking threat.
Scarvet lurks behind Saurus to make sue they don't run.
Priest lurks behind Saurus and stores dice to use as dispel. Should have at least 6 dice to help limit magical damage.
Carnosaur is the reason I've become cold-blooded, he has to stay. Salies rather than steg as they are not so much of a points sink and with skirmisk could well be capable of eating lone Wizards.
Do I really need a Btle Std? Should the Scarvet be in a unit (no Nike lizard suggestions thanks)? Is the priest worth it? Will the cav be able to operate without Std and musc?
Should the Saurus pack more punch? I don't like painting skinks so please don't suggest any skinky swarms. We've already had a discussion on Cav v Kroxogors and the jury came down on the side of the cav, much better fig, better charge and pursue, cope better without skinkies.
So any opnions out there?
Erm, don't like Skinks he? I suggest you try out the Sacred Host of Quetzl. All your Saurus (and Skink, but you ahven't got them) units and characters have to take the Spawning of Quetzl, but your Saurus don't become special.
And without Skinks the extra save might save the day.
You can find the rules for Sacred Hosts on the GW site.
The Diadem of Power on the Priest is useless and beside that, you've got little magic defence. Therefore I suggest dropping the Diadem and getting yourself a Dispel Scroll, maybe 2, instead.
The Burning Blade of Chotec (on the Old Blood) isn't worth it. Instead I'd give him a Scimitar of the Sun Resplendent or a simple great weapon.
Apart from those things it's a fine list. Swarms aren't taken much, but in your case you might need them.
I think swarms are excellent - unbreakable, five poison attacks and five wounds, plus they're skirmishers. I see them all the time at my gaming club.
They are small though, so your cavalry might get shot. There was a similar cav vs. Krox debate on this site and most people preferred the krox although i think everyone agreed they are both useful.
If your general hasn't got a great weapon then i might be tempted to opt for the kroxigor, i always try to fit in at least one strength seven unit in any army i build. I hate chariots.
By the way skinks are amazing
Thanks for all that. Yes I was involved in the Krox v Saurus cav discussion. I chose the cav in the end because most people seemed to think that the Krox worked best with a skink screen and I don't like skinkies!
I take the point about the strength 7 weapon but what about the army standard bearer? Do I need one or could he join a unit as a combat monster?
Are two one shot dispell scrolls really better than 6 dispell dice per turn?
Would it be better to replace the priest with another scarvet to join the second Saurus unit?
I've never used the diadem of power before so i cant really comment on it. I think its good to experiment, so i say go for it! Dispel scrolls are pretty standard, but that is because they work, i always like to have two in my army at least. There are certain times when u REALLY don't want a spell to go off.
Another magic item that i perhaps think is underrated is the gleaming pendant. I like to give it to an oldblood on a carnie, if u charge he strikes first with a GW anyway and then if u let the pendant go off next turn he strikes first AGAIN with his great weapon. Not to mention his carnie's attacks.
I never play standard bearers in my lizardman army, but thats just a personal preference. I would actually go for another skink priest in my opinion, but again thats just me.
Put your Battle Standard Bearer (BS in a unit. His standard helps them stand their ground and survive. Of course, a Scar-vet is pretty much a combat monster by his stats but if you give him a standard use him to support your troops, especially your Saurus line.
Thanks for that but does a Saurus army really need a battle standard bearer? Is it really necessary with their 3 dice leadership? What's the experience of other lizard generals?
I only use a BS when I run my Slann. We have an abnormally large amount of VC players at our gaming place, and they love their ethereal units. That makes most of us buy at least a token magic weapon when we're playing. This in turn keeps me from making a Scar Vet a BSB because in my mind. if I can have a magic standard, I'll take it, but if I have to choose between a magic weapon to hurt the undead and a banner for extra effects, I'll take the weapon.
But if you really, really want the BSB then I'd suggest putting him in one of the saurus units.
Actually a BSB scar-vet can take a magic weapons can't he? I heard it suggested a few times to take a scar-vet as a BSB with the sword of the hornet so I think you can. Anyway about this list and your skink one have you considered combining ideas of both lists? When people were talking about skinks, I think most meant they were good to compliment saurus. So my suggestion is to sit down and rethink which list you like more and work with one and add some aspects of the other. Like if you like this list, dry dropping a thing or two to make room for two units of skinks or so. That's just what I'd do as I've never been extremely successfull going extremely skink heavy or saurus heavy because they work better when there is a good balance.
A BSB scar-vet can take a magic weapon, but he can't have a magic banner *and* a magic weapon is what I was getting at.
