Hey guys I posted this in another forum, but I wanted to get as many oppinions as I could so I figured I would drop it here, too.
Just curious how you guys think this would play out. I don't have the TG required for the army, and don't care to buy them until I've gotten some reactions
Slan, 4th Gen., BSB, Diadem, Dispel Scroll
15 TG w/Shields
20 Saurus w/Banner
10 SKinks w/javelin
10 Skinks w/javelin
10 Skinks w/pipes
10 Skinks w/pipes and scout
Total: 2001 pts.
(Only 15 TG b/c I cannot afford any more point-wise. Besides, the cheaper the unit ends up overall, the better. It's already sitting at a large chunk of my points). I could drop one more TG (which would still leave me a 2 rank bonus w/3 TG on the 3rd rank to soak up casualities) in order to combined the 10 man units and provide them w/a banner. I am not sure how effective MSU saurus are. What do you guys think?
Personally i just dont see how the use of MSU with saurus warriors is points effective. Small units of 10 will lose rank bonuses and outnumbering straight away. Also, the lack of command groups means you also lose the bonus to your combat resolution afforded by a standard.
Whilst the units high number of attacks and cold -blooded rule means they will still be tough to beat in combat, the idea behind the saurus is not to play a defensive role but rather to beat your opponent soundly and then run them down.
3 units of 20 warriors (with spears) with full command and 40 skinks comes in at 1170 points leaving you over 800 points to play with and units of this size will function much more strongly in cc, the use for which they are intended.
Also, if your going infantry heavy, drop the slaan. It hurts me to say this but at 4th generation he simply doesn't have what it takes to completely dominate the magic phase on his own. The only reason you should be taking a slaan is to dominate the magic phase, rendering him a superflous waste.
I would field an oldblood with the scimitar of the sun resplendant and stick him in a unit of saurus. The extra 7 str 5 attacks will sway almost any combat your way, also, he comes in considerably cheaper than the slaan and you no longer need to splurge on the TG.
For magical defense, you could simply use the spawning of Tepok. 2 units with this and a lvl 1 skink priest carrying dispell scrolls will amount to 5 dispell dice + the scrolls which is more than enough.I like.....an excellent choice when used in conjunction with skinks.3 KroxigorI like this setup as well. The skinks with javelins and shields can double as a combat speed bump against other skirmishers and scouts if necessary. Also, their weapons are still poisoned and are still ranged weapons. Sit these guys in a water feature right in front of enemy missile troops. At -3 to hit (hopefully long range) they will be able to take it on the chin before jumping forward and raking them with poisoned shots.10 SKinks w/javelin
10 Skinks w/javelin
10 Skinks w/pipes
10 Skinks w/pipes and scoutWith the extra points saved on the slaan you should be able to make it 3 salamanders.2 Sallamanders
To recap, maybe reconsider the saurus configuration and your choice of general. Other than that, i like the all infantry lizardmen army, good luck,
Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes. After that, who cares, your a mile away and you have his shoes!!
Chuck Norris invented water
Yeah, I realize the Slann is probably not the best choice, I just have a soft spot for that fat frog I got into Lizards in part because I liked his model so much. I've used him at second generation, but he bordered on over-powered in my opinion, and since my friends (and myself) are all still learnign the game, they did not have the experience to really isolate and destroy his unit yet. I felt bad, so I dropped him to 4th. That, and I really don't like having so many points wrapped into one unit. Even a 4th Gen. and TG is very expensive. I might have to drop him in favor of an Old Blood setup up. I would probably keep 2x20 units of Saurus and just drop the Slann and TG for all the neccessary points, maybe add in another special as well (Like CoR).
If only that Slann was about 100 pts. cheaper But ah well, maybe in a future edition, right?
Oh, and I have 2 Salamanders for a similiar reason. 3 just felt overpowered to me. Just having 2, I can nuke entire units of skirmishers/light troops within one to two turns. I was afraid 3 would just be a little too much. No doubt more effective, but I want to be nice to my friends, heh
I pretty much agree with El Capitan.
The Slann seems out of place, and I was expecting a lot more Saurus and Kroxies for an infantry heavy list. Instead I saw lots of those icky, pesky skink things in your list.
Two units of 10 Saurus are victory points waiting to be lost. I'd combine them into a single unit.
