hey guys i'm extremely new to lizard men and was pondering the question weather a slann mage priest or a saurus oldblood would be better for a 2k army. I would like to know what lord is better and would like some general info... on how to use them in a game.
If its not too much i would like to know what to arm the lords with as i am completely dumbfounded on the variety of what they can carry around...
Much appreciated and thanks for the general help.8Y
Can't go past a 2nd Gen. Slann. Best mage in the game and gives everyone withing 12" LD 9 with rerolls to break tests (providing you make him the army battle standerd bearer and general). You should field him in a unit of temple guard/saurus unit with BSo Tzatcotl (spelling?) to ensure maximum hardness and to protect the Slann (note: if you lose the Slann you will probably lose the battle, his unit is usually worth 1000 vps). If you are feeling adventurous you could deploy him without a saurus unit to give him 360 LOS and increased munouverability as well as saving points on the otherwise manditory bodyguard unit. It must be said that he is very vunerable like this and flyers, cavalry, lone characters etc. will try their best to kill him. Many people will now argue more reasons not to get lone slann in 3...2...1...now! oh, wait...any minute now...
I guess I should say something about the Oldblood as well. Not as good as Slann but can be useful. He has lots of attacks and is ideal for leading a saurus cavalry unit or riding a carnasour on his lonesome. Hes basically a scar vet on drugs that can ride a big dinosaur and get more magic items.
I also advocate the use of a 2nd Gen Slann. I feel the Slann mage priest is the very essence of a lizardmen army. I would like to point out, however, that a lone Slann does not have 360 LoS but still only has 90 LoS.
Oldblood on carnosaur is also a lot of fun. He can be kitted up to be extremely nasty with items such as the scimitar of the sun. I'm still not a fan of the maiming shield though, 30 points for an extra attack just doesn't seem to add up to me, I'd rather kit him out with the enchanted shield. Make sure you give him a ward, especially if he is riding on a carnosaur as most war machines don't allow armour saves. The Slann comes with a ward but it is well worth looking at the plaque of protection to increase this as he will likely be the target of a lot of cannon balls and stone throwers.
Just as a side note,
Whilst i also advocate the use of a slaan in preference to an oldblood (until of course you can have both, and even then, the temptation of two slaan is often too great!) but you have to remember that in 2000 points in particular the slaan will restrict your gameplay.
He can easily be upgraded to well over 500 points. Stick in the mandatory protective unit and your looking at 800+ points. This doesn't leave much to play with.
Whilst the oldblood CAN be upgraded to be wuite expensive he also functions quite effectively with a few cheaper builds. So if its a smaller, less combat orientated army your after then go with a slaan, otherwise the oldblood.
Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes. After that, who cares, your a mile away and you have his shoes!!
Chuck Norris invented water
Is that really true Stonehambey? No 360 LOS for Slann (is it because he's US 5?) eh... Just goes to show how much I suck at rules. Lone Slann just keeps getting worse and worse )
I think it really comes down to what your looking out of from your lord. If you want alot of magic, then the Slann is definately the way to go. However, the Old Blood is a CC monster and really shouldn't be discounted. AFter a Vampire Count/Lord and a Chaos Lord, the Old Blood is arguably the best CC Lord in the game. Giving him a Carnosaur just makes him a monster.
Magicky death or smashy death the ultimate question. i prefere the oldblood really get that and a bunch of sacred spawnings of tepoc for anti magic. Nothings better then being strong and knowin your oponent has a hard time stoping it;Y. but im definatly not against the slann i just find that slann would be better in games over 2k. MY opinion is that the were as the slann has alot of stuff that mix well with it its just too expensive to get all of that not to mention wenever i see a liz player playing with a slann its kinda obvious he wants to dominate the magic phase. wereas wen i see a oldblood i dont know exacly the strategy hes going for. Not to mention i believe more that it should be a well built army with a leader not the other way around.
1:find what makes him tick
2:stop the ticking
In my personal opinion, the Old Blood might be a bit more reliable since CC is usually more reiiable than magic, but again its just my opinion.
I use both quite often and must admit whilst the oldblood can chop his way through almost anything the Slann is definitly more fun!
Nothing more amusing the burning a unit of Bret nights with 12 hits from spirit of the forge or placing a small marker over a unit of dwarfs and watching them get sucked into the pit of shades. The slann and magic dominance is alot more hit and miss than the reliable old blood, but its a game and I am always looking for the most amusing way to play and for me thats the Slann.
