I have read many articles and tactics about skinks and saurus on the GW site. But i have yet to find a real reason for skinks besides being cannon fodder.
I wrote down an army list consisting of 40 skinks and 40 saurus as core, and asked the local GW store manager to review the list. He said everything was fine, but laughed at me when it came to core units. He complimented me on the 2 blocks of saurus, but laughed in a criticizing way and asked "why all those skinks?". I responded by telling him i didnt know, and that i read many articles that told me to include a lot of skinks.
So here is my point. Why so many skinks??? True that they are our ranged unit and have many special abilities, but with a toughness of 2 and 6 points a peice, why would you use them outside of screens?
And also. I like my list having 2 blocks of 20 saurus. How many skinks would i have to use to make them proportional and useful???
lets see:fleeing charges to set up good charges, assassinating wizards, kill warmachines, screening, krox can charge through them hold board quaters, kill other enemy skirmishers, harass litely armoured troops with poisened shots, hold water features and difficult terrain. u see they do have a lot of uses

I adopted a cute lil' viking fetus
from Fetusmart! Hooray fetus! </a>
I have a unit of skinks per unit of saurus as a rule. My basic 2k list has 2 units of saurus and one unit of double BS saurus, so I have 2 units of 25 skinks used for flanking and screening and one unit of chameleon skinks that I use for assasinating the enemy wizards and taking out warmachine crews.
<(^^)> <(^^<) (>^^)> ^(^^)^ Dance Kirby! Dance!
I'll repeat whats been said already by zin, that they do the following:
1. Contest table corners
2. Overwhelm enemies flank gaurds with their numbers
3. Snipe from water features
4. Flank and rear charges, with javelins they get a 5+ save in H2H,and getting +1/+2 to combat is always nice
5.setting up charges
6. Killing monsters. I know it sounds crazy, but ive killed a few war hydras and giants using just skinks before due to poisin
I would never leave home without them. I find the less saurus you have, the more skinks you should have. If your playing with 40 saurus,i'd reccomend atleast 24 skinks, possibly 30. If you were playing with say 30 or 25,i'd say an equal or close to equal number of the two.
p.s:anything chameolin skinks can do,regular skinks can do for half the points cost. Thier only advantage is the extra -1 to hit them and BS4,but skinks usually die to auto-hit weapons, and BS4 doesnt mean much when i can get twice the number of blowpipe shots from a same point amount of regular skinks. Also, using squads of 25 is crazy. Use squads of half the size of your saurus. That way, when they flee from panic, the saurus dont panic, when they all die, saurus dont flee from panic. Also,a unit of 25 skirmishers is so unweildy they lose almost all of their manueverability, with the exception of beastherd, who make up for it with standards and rank bonus.
I say it depends on the tactics you use for me and my block of 64 saurus a couple of skinks to protect my flanks but with a few saurus you should have alot of skinks to screen them and give a volly of fire
At his feet a dying Tarkanan warrior urtered the words, 'Long live the Dragon King....'
64 saurus!! holy crap thats gotta be nasty! i mean what could you do to it, it would always outnumber you... could soak up casualties and is made up of good warriors (not crappy gobbos who are a good army just one on one they will lose to almost everything...)
